STAND FOR SWAGING-ANVILS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that'I, EDWARD L. Crro'r'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of'Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stands for Swaging-Anvils, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in stands for swaging anvils and is especially adapted for dentists use.

The object of my invention is the production of a device -adapted to absorb shocks and jars and prevent noises which are other wise incident to the swaging operation.

A further object is the production of a device as mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction and efiicient in use.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the device.

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a circular metallic base 1 in the upper side of which is centrally threaded the lower end of a tubular post 2. Loosely mounted in the post 2 is a stem 3 formed at its upper end with a circular head or swaging block 4. The stem 3 and hence the swaging block 4 carried thereby is yieldingly supported by means of a helical compression spring 5 which is arranged in the post 2 at the base thereof. Interposed between the spring 5 and the lower end of stem 3 are metallic washers 6 and 7 and a compressible washer 8, the latter is preferably of leather.

The spring 5 serves evidently to yieldingly support the stem 3 being therefore adapted to absorb any shocks or jars which would be incident to the use of the device as a swaging anvil. The employment of the washers 6, 7 and 8 results in a noise absorb- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing arrangement so that any metallic sound, such as squeaking, of the spring in expanding or contracting will be absorbed and therefore unnoticed.

A device of the construction set forth is of special utility in a dentists oflice or workroom since with a rigid swaging anvil, such as is generally used at the present time, considerable annoyance results to the other tenants in the building occupied by the dentist. With the present construction the shocks and jars incident to the swaging operation will be absorbed and therefore the annoyance above referred to obviated.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eflect, this is capable of.

variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the class described com prising a base; a tubular post arising from said base; a stem loosely mounted in said post; a cushion arranged in said post for yieldingly supporting said stem; noise absorbing devices interposed between said cushion and said stem; and a swaging block provided at the upper end of said stem; substantially as described.

2. A device of the kind described comprising a'tubular body; a helical compression spring in said body; a stem extending into said body above said spring; a pair of metallic washers between said spring and stem; a compressible washer between said metallic washers; and an anvil at the upper end of said stem, substantially as described;
