To all whom it may concern.
, Be it known that l, li LLIAM JAMES SAR- vis, of the Tillage of Hanover, in the county of Grey, in theProvince of Ontario, 'Can ada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stoves and the object of the invention is to provide a stove which. will draw the cold. air from the fire level and utilize it for the updraft through the fire and for controlling the lip-draft in the stove chimney and it consists essentially of a right angular duct extending from the center of the stove bottom to the chimneyside of the stove and from the center to the fire front side of the stove an air supply orifice in the outer wall of the duct in proximity to the floor level, ducts extending vertically from the outer ends of the aforesaid ducts, openings in the inner wall thereof opening respectively into the ash space of the stove immediately beneath the grate and into the chimney in proximity to the ordinary draft opening and controlling dampers for such openings as hereinafter more particularly explained by the following specification.

A is a stove body of any suitable construction, such body may be either a cast or sheet metal body. The stove A is provided with the usual oven space A, fire pot A provided with a grate A ashpit space A and the fines A A and A leading around the oven and the, direct draft opening A leading into the chimney and the opening A into the back fiue also leading into the chimney.
The parts above described form the ordinary construction of the stove and I will now describe my device forming the subject matter of this invention.
B is a duct, the arms B and B of which are at right angles one to the other, the apex of the angle being located substantially in Specification of Letters Patent.

the center of the stove bottom. The arm B extends from the center of the stove bottom to the fire front of the stove and is provided with a vertical extension B extending upwardly to the grate level.
B is an opening formed in the common wall of the flue-portion and ashpit A" opening at one side in the flue B and at the opposite side in the ashpit A immediately beneath the grate A B is a fiap damper pivoted above the opening B.
B is a small opening formed in the front wall of the flue B B is a push rod pivotally connected at its inner end to the flap damper B and passing toward its outer end through the opening B. The lower edge of the push rod 13 is provided with a ratchet rack B designed to engage the lower edge of the opening B so as tohold the push rod B longitudinally in'position and the damper B at the required angle. The arm B of the flue B extends from the center otthe stove bottom to the chimney side of the stove and to the back of the back flue formed between the back wall A of the oven and the back wall A of the stove. B is a vertical extension for the flue arm B such extension extending vertically upwardly in proximity to the top of the stove and provided with an opening in the wall 13 and provided at its upper end with a suitable knob 5 against which bears an arc-spring E the ends of the spring hearing upon the upper surface of the stove top.
is a slidable closing plate carried by the stem E and adapted to close the slot B in all positions of the stem.
B is a link connecting the lower end of the stem with the crank B It will thus be seen that by adjusting the position of the knob 13 and the stem B in the slot B readily adjusted.
B is an orifice formed in the lower Wall of the ducts B and provided With an annular surrounding flange B projecting downwardly in close proximity to the fioor. B is the controlling arm for the ordinary direct damper A B and B are flue orifices and closures therefor, by which the duct portions B and B may be cleaned when desired.
Having described the principal parts involved in my invention I shall briefly describe the operation of the same. It Will be readily seen that when the fire is once started in the fire pot A that an-u-p-draft through the fire iscreated from the ordinary 'up-draft damper A of the stove. When this has taken place the damperB is opened and the ordinary damper 20f the stove entirely or partially closed. By this means the cold air from the floor is drawn to the fire through the opening B, the duct B and duct portion B through the orifice B and through the fire. If it is desired to limit the draft this may be done alsoby drawing the cold air from the floor through the other arm B- of the right angular duct and upwardly through the passage B and through the orifice B leading into the chimney, the admission of air Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. 1
