Swuwwtm Q Q QZW I .9 I Oltmzersen J y W 9& Luqmmggz/ My ill OLE STENERSEN, OF BRGQKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOE 0F ENE-HALF TO OLAF P. OLSEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YGRK.
Application filed. January 9, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, OLE S'rmvnssnn, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, oi which the following is a specification such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mechanics and draftsmens tools or instruments, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be used as an. ordinary compass, dividers, or as proportional dividers, also for measuring the inner diameter of tubes and the outer diameter or" tubes, cylindrical bars, rods and the like, and with this and other objects in view, the invention consists in a tool or implement of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side view of my improved tool or instrument in its simplest form; Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. l, but showing the parts in a reversed position; Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a section on the line ll of 2; Fig. 5 a view similar to Fig. l, but showing a modification designed for use as proportional dividers; Fig. 6 a section on the line 66 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4: inclusive, 1 provide a tool a of the class specified comprising two similar members a of the same length and consisting of straight central portions provided at one end with curved arm portions a and the opposite ends of which are pointed, as shown at a Each of the members a is provided with a central longitudinal slot (6 through which is passed a screw 6 provided at one end with a head 6 adjacent to which is a cylindrical portion 6 which fits in the slots a and on which the members a are free to turn, and said screw is also provided with a milled nut b and washer b Mounted in the slot a of one of the members a is a sliding and detachable pencil Patented Mar. 34), 1915.
Serial No. 811,155.
The use of this device as a compass or divider will be the same as the use of others of its class, and the pencil d may be adjusted into any desired position in the holder 0.
In using this device for the purpose of measuring the inner diameter of a tube, the curved arms a are inserted into said tube and the pointed ends of the parts a are separated so that the ends a of said arms will bear on the inner walls of the tube, and the distance between the pointers or ends a of the arms a will give the inner diameter of the tube, and the screw 6 being adjustable in the slots (4 the separate members a may be so adjusted that the pointed ends (4* of the parts a will also give the exact inner diameter of the tube.
in order to measure the diameter of a rod, bar or similar device, the position of the parts a is reversed, as shown in Fig. 2, and the end of the bar, rod or similar device is inserted between the arms a as indicated in dotted lines at 6Z2, after which the said bar, rod or similar device is moved outwardly between the ends a of the arms a and the distance between said ends of the arms a will give the exact diameter of said rod, bar or similar device, and the screw 5 may be so adjusted in the parts a that the pointed ends a of said parts will also, and at the same time, give the exact diameter of said rod or bar.
This device may also be used as an ordinary square, as a bevel or miter gage, and suitable scales or scale marks may be provided in connection with the parts a and the head 6 of the screw 7) or the washer 6 as in other devices of this class, to adapt the said tool for any of the purposes specified, and said washer b may be made non-rotatable if desired.
In Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive, I have shown my improved tool adapted for use as proporgear 6, and said pin is also provided at its outer end with a milled head 9 A sliding block it is also mounted in the slot a in the other part .or member a and a pin 2' ispassed through the blocks f and h and through the slots a 1n the parts or members a and provided with a milled nut 6 between which and the block 71, is placed a friction, sleeve washer 2' The blocks 7 and h are also provided with outside flanges f and h which bear on the parts a and said blocks f and h and their connected parts constitute, as a Whole, a sliding and adjustable element by which the parts or members a of the tool are connected, and by means of which both of said parts or members may be adjusted into any desired position relative to said element, or said element adjusted into any desired position relative to said parts or members.
One side of one of the parts a of this tool is provided with a scale 7', and is marked inside dia., meaning inside diameter, and the. other part of said member is provided with a scale 70, and is marked outside dia., meaning outside diameter, and the block 71. is provided on the end thereof adjacent to the pointed ends of the part a of the tool with a projection we having a mark m adapted to be used in connection with the scales and is. It must be understood, that the parts a of the tool are of the'same length, andthe use of this device in measuring the inside diameter of a tube, or the diameter of a rod, bar or similar device, will be the same as with the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, it being un derstoo'd that all adjustments are elfected by the central element or member involving the blocks f and I2, and their connected parts. One of the parts ormembers a is also provided adjacent to the pointed end thereof with a pin n movable in the transverse slot 0 in the corresponding face of the other part or member a and the object of this construction is to provide means for holding the parts or members a in proper position in the adjustment of the central member, or the operation thereof. It must he also understood that this method of using the parts or elements a of the tool, or the construction by which it is effected, is not of my invention, the same being well known in other tools of this class.
I also provide one of the curved arms a with a cutting edge a by means of which the device is adapted to serve as a pencil sharpener and for other purposes.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is r A tool of the class described comprising two parts or members pivotally, slidably and adjustably connected, said parts being provided with central, longitudinal slots, and a pencil holder adapted to be connected with one of said parts and designed to hold a pencil parallel therewith, said holder being approximately tubular in form and being open at one side and provided with flexible members adapted to be passed through the slot in said part and to be folded around the side portions thereof and which fit in recesses in the backs of said side portions.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 2nd day of January 1914.
OLE STENERSEN.
