"ments in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.-
- When preparing certain work on the type writer, es ecially when billing or invoicing and simu taneously making copies of the invoice on the leaves of a book or making carbon copies, it is desirable. to have a mechanism on the typewriter which permits of, rotating the paper cylinder or platen backward to a certain degree in order, after the completion of one sheet of the invoice,
to be able to insert the'next sheet into the typewriter in such a manner that, retaining a certain distance from the last line on the page of the book, its next line to be written comes into the printing line, corresponding to thefirst writing line of the invoice sheet.
Billing mechanisms for rotating the paper cylinder of the kind referred to in the present invention are already known, the con.- struction being that by means of a. device controlled by a crank the backward rotation of the platen by a certain amount and the forward'rotation only by, the same amount can be effected by means of this crank. In these known devices the adjusting mechanism, including the crank, is generally on the left side of the machine (but always only on one side) so that the typist is compelled to always effect the adjustment on that one side of the machine. Further, the knownrbilling mechanism requires the paper carriage to be withdrawn to such an extent toward one side that the crank may be rotated without fouling the frame of the type writer. The billing. mechanism according to the present invention differs substantially from these known devices in that the backward rotation, on adjusting the platen, is effected to only a determined degree by means of the billing mechanism, whereas the forward rotationis unrestricted Further no crank or similar device is necessary for operating the billing mechanism, but the ro-' tation' of" an ordinary handwheel on the platen is sufficient, and it is quite immaterial whether the right hand or the left hand Specification of Letters Patent. This result is attained by the billingmechani'sm being connected with the paper cylinder by means of a coupling which is so arranged, that on the backward rotation the paper roller is automatically coupled with the billing mechanism and thereby its movement is restricted, whereas on the forward rotation the platen. is released so that it is not restricted in the further rotation. This formation ofthe billmg mechanism renders it possible according to another form of construction of the in vention, to obviate another disadvantage often to be seen in such'mechanisms.

Finally the axle 4 carries to the right of said locl nut the cup shaped main body or housing 10 of the billing mechanism which forms a closed housing with the limiting disk 7 and, with its guiding flange for the locking ball 8 surrounds the washer 8 allowing a certain play. in order to secure the above mentioned parts in their position in relation to one another there is provided a collar 11 on the axle 1 while the main body 10 or housing is prevented from rotating about the axle 4- by the pin 3 engaging in a slot therein. The washer 8 is provided in its periphery with circular notches, similar to a toothed wheel for receivingthe locking ball 8 urged by a spring a which strives to fall into the notches in the washer 8 so that it is carried around by said washer and brought into contact with the stop 6. In the guiding flange of the main body 10 of the housing there is provided a slot in which is insertcd a piece 14: which is provided with a slot 15 and a, nose 15. Close to this piece there ismounted in the flange oi. the main body a handle '13 which carries a projection 12 provided with bevels 12 12", Fig. 3, and
by the help of which the locking ball 8 may be pressed back into the slot 15 in the piece 14. In the slot 15 there may be preferably arranged a spring which is compressed by the inwardly moved locking ball and on the ball being released said spring moves the ball out of the slot 15. For the purpose of adjusting the stop 6, a number of adjusting holes are provided in the limiting disk 7, in which holes there engages the round pin of an adjusting screw 16 arranged in the flange of the main body 10.
The operation of the present invention is as follows A. loose leaf 17 of the invoice book is inserted into the typewriter in the usual manner together with the carbon paper 18 and the invoice sheet 19, and corresponding to the heading of the invoice the stop 6 is ad justed with relation to the locking ball 8 by means of the adjusting holes in the limiting disk 7 and the screw 16. When an. invoice is complete it is removed from the typewriter after releasing the paperfeed rollers 22 from the platen. It is necessary during this operation to holdfl thcjlcat 11 together with the carbon paperflbyiineaiis at a device, for instance by meansotfthelisual paper holding bar in connection with special holding or clamping rollers in'such' a man.- ner that there can be no movement of the same on withdrawing the invoice sheet. ;.The paper feed roller i to bear against the' platen and the latter is rotated backward to the determined extent by turning either the right-hand or theletthand hand wheel 21. A new invoice sheet is now inserted and the platen is rotated forward in the usual manner until the date line of the invoice head is brought level with the line indicator 20.
The locking ball 8 together with the projection 19 operate in such a manner that by swinging the handle 13 on the projection out of the position shown in Fig. 2 into that shown in Fig. 3, the slopingsurfaces of the projection 12 force the ball S 'intothe slot 15. In this position of the ball the billing mechanism is out ofvaction, and the platen may be rotated backward or forward at will. If however, with the freed ball as shown in Fig. 2, the platen is rotated in the direction of the arrow B then the washer 8 takes with it the ball until this meets with the stop 6, whereby the platen is prevented from rotating farther backward. If the platen is rotated in the'direction oft-he ar row V Fig. 2 then the locking bad 8 which is diverted by the nose 1.5 slides into the slot 15, and can therefore not be taken along with the washer 8 so that no jamming-occurs and the platen may be i itated freely l on ward at will. It is to be noted. that the whole billing mechanism on the axle 4: is united with the hand wheel to form a connected whole so that the device can be readilyapplied to or interchanged on any typewriter by in serting the axle 4 into the platen.

Against this platen bear the feed rollers 22 which are carried by arms 22 .which latter are pivotally mounted on the platen frame in which the platen is mounted andare pressed on to the platen by means of springs "which are however not illustrated. The release of the feed rollers; ti a t is to say their raising from the' platen isigfiected by the action'of the releasing lever 2 mounted on the shaft 24, by means of a-double lever 25 f likewise securely mounted on this shaft.
'The billing mechanism in this case consists of the small and' wheel 21 arranged on the axle 4. The parts 27 and 30 are free to rotate on the axle 4. The cap 27 is provided on its upper side with a slot through which there projects a pawl 29, which is pivotally mounted on the flanged part 27 of the ca 27, and wh ch operates together. with theratchet whe 28. This pawl 29. is generally held in engagement with the ratchet wheel 28 by means of a spring 31, but can be disengaged from, and
held out of engagement with the ratchet Wheel 28 by means of the pr 'ection 33 through the action of the head 3- which is rotatably arranged on the flange 27 of the cap 27. In the notches of the toothed wheel 30 therevengages a pin 34 which is secured on a sleeve 38. The latter is axially movable on the shaft 24 against the action of a spring 559 and is provided with a slot 40 into which engages the pin 44 seured on the shaft 24. ()n the sleeve 38 there is further secured a projection 36 or the latter is in one piece with said sleeve and can project into a slot 37 in the la e 27? of the cap 27. By the side of the slot 37 there is provided a stop on the flange 27 which acts together with a stop 46 on the toothed wheel 30. The method (if-working of this form of construction of the invention is as fol-' invoice head the stop 46 on the toothed wheel 30 is first adjusted with respect to the stop 35 on the flange 27*. If however before the backward movement, the release lever 2 should through an oversight not'bereturned to its original position, then the periphery of the flange 27 .will come into contact with the projection 36 on the backward rotation (in Fig. 5, in a clockwise direction) and press down this latter and hold same in this lower position (see Fig. 7). Thus the releasing lever 2 is brought back into its position of rest so that the platen rollers 22' are again in contact with theplaten 23. When the backward rotation of the platen'has reached its limit by the stop 35 striking against the stop 46 a new in- -voice sheet is inserted from the paper guiding plate and the platen is again rotated forward until the first line to be. written arrives in the correct writing position. Upon the first following backward rotation, the ratchet wheel 28 takes with it the casing 27'by means of a pawl 29. On the forward movement, the same parts take the casing with them by thepawlf29 being forced into the ratchet wheel 28 by means of the spring 3 The strength of this spring is determined in relation to the friction occurring in the moving parts in such a manner that it overcomes the resistance, which is kept as small as possible, between said parts. .Thus on the forward rotation the connection is SillllClBIltl) powerful between, the ratchet wheel and the sleeve 27 to carry around the sleeve 27 also during the forward rotafurther rotated, the locking device 28, 29

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotary platen; of stop devices adjustable with respect to the platen'and to one another,means to hold one of said devices stationary in it's adjusted position under all conditions of operation of the platen, means always moving in/ unison with the platen and cooperating with said stop devices to permit the platen to move only a predetermined distance in one direction, and for permitting unrestrained movement of the platen in the other direction, and i'neans on the stop de vice that is held stationary to render the means moving with the platen inoperative.
