FACE-STEAMER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pafijgmtgqfl Ema)? 163 1915 Application filed April '28, 1914. Serialno. 834,943.
To all whom 2'25 may concern.
Be it known that l, DoRA 8. DAILY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Steamers, of
. which the following is a specification.
' head down to the base of the neck.
My invention relates to the class of facesteamers.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple device of this nature which is readilyapplied to the face and which gives an equal'and thorough distribution of the steam or, other remedial fluid-agent under conditions of perfect control and safety; and which while forming an ethcient closure over the face, yet permits free respiration.
To these ends my invention consists in the novel facesteamer which ll shall hereinafter fully describe, by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section of my facesteamer on the line 00-02 of Fig. 2, showing its application. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a back view of the same. Fig. a is a view looking into the interior of thedevice which is shown extended, the top spring being omitted.
Though the device may be made of any suitable material and in such sections or parts as may be constructively required, ll prefer that it be made of soft rubber, cast inmolded in essentially single piece. This is not, however, material for'it may be otherwise manufactured. v
The device comprises a front 1, having on each side the flaps 2. These form a piece or sheet ample enough to freely inclose the face and head of the patient from the fore- Y The top of the sheet is fited with any suitable form of elastic or springy clasp. T have here shown a springy band 3 serving'as a topcirclet. In Fig. 3, also show a pressure button 4 to hold the flaps together. A tab 5 is formed at the bottom of the front 1, and to this a tape 6 or other fastening is attached, which tape being pinned down at 7 to the dress of the patient serves to hold the lower part of the device closed.
The front l is formed or provided on its inner surface with a wall 8 which is sun lciently extensive to overlie the whole face and front of the neck, and said wall at its edges is hermetically sealed or tightly connected to or formed as part of the front 1, whereby a chamber 9 is formed between the front 1 and the wall 8. In the wall 8, over its entire area, are made holes 10, whereby the steam or other fluid agent is well distributed and directed over the surfacesto be treated. The front 1 is further formed or provided with steam inlet tubes 11 which extend exteriorly and communicate at the inner ends through the front wall 1 with the chamber 9. There are two of these inlet tubes, in the best construction, in order to more evenly direct the steam into the chamber and avoid any tendency of a heated concentration on one spot. The outer ends of these tubes fit a Y-branch coupling 12 of a steam tube 13, which tube is fitted with. a controlling cook 14;. formed or provided with the air tubes 15.
These open outwardly through the front wall 1, to the outer air. They thence extend inwardly through the chamber 9, and through "the distributing wall 8 and their ends are formed with nasal bulbs lii which are inserted in the nostrils of the patient.
Tn applying and using the device, the spring band or clasp 3 is fitted around the upper part of the head, the flaps are buttoned behind at l, and the tape 6 is fastened down at 7. The air tubes 15 are inserted in the nostrils, and then by means of the cook 14, the patient controllably admits the steam or other fluid agent through the tubes 11 to the chamber 9. Spreading out in and filling this chamber, the steam or other agent passes through the holes 10 in the wall 8 and is evenly and well distributed over the surfaces to be treated. 7
During treatment free respiration is maintained through the air tubes 15.
T claim l. A face steamer comprising an outer sheet of material of a length to extend over the face and neclr of the patient, the sides of the sheet being adapted to overlie and be secured to one another at the back of the head of the patient, a yieldable band carried by the upper end of said sheet to engage the head of the patient, an inner wall extending substantially from top to bottom of the outer sheet and having a sealed contact therewith. to form an intermediate chamber, a steam inlet tube connected with the outer sheet adjacent the lower edge and connecting with said chamber, nasal receiving tubes project- The front 1 is also.
ing inwardly from the outer sheet ata point above said steam tube, and communicating with the outside, and said inner sheet having therein a series of steam inlet passages.
2. A. face steamer comprising an outer ,sheet of material of a length to extend over the face and neck of the patient, the sides of the sheet being adapted to project to the back of the head of the patient and be secured to one another, a band carried by the upper end of said sheet to engage the head of the patient, an inner wall extending substantially from top to bottom of the" outer sheet and having a sealed contact therewith to form an intermediate chamber, a steam inlet pipe connected with the outer sheet, adjacent the lower edge thereof and connecting with said chamber,'an inhaling tube projecting inwardly from the outer sheet intermediate the ends of the sheet and communicatingwith the outside, and said inner sheet having therein a series of steam inlet passages.
3. A face steamer comprising an outer sheet of material of a length to extend over the face and neck of the patient, means carried by the sheet and adapted to engage over the head of the patient, and a supporting member .projecting downwardly from the lower edge of the sheet to engage the garment of the patient, an inner sheet secured at its edges to the outer sheetto form between the sheets a steam chamber, the inner sheet having a series of closely associated steam passages, air inlet tubes projecting inwardly from the outer sheet through the inner sheet, and in communication with the outside, and a steam inlet pipe connecting with the outer sheet, the said outer sheet being otherwise free from openings throughout, and said air inlet tubes being curved so as to engage within the nasal passages of the patient. 1
4. A portable face steamer comprising an outer sheet to. inclose the surfaces to be treated, means for supporting the sheet from the head of the patient, an inner sheet extendingv substantially from top to bottom of the outer sheet and perforate throughout, a steam inlet pipe communicating through the outersheet with the chamber formed between the inner and outer sheets, said outer sheet being otherwise free from openings leading into said chamber, and integral tubular parts projecting inwardly from the outer sheet through the inner sheet terminating in upwardly curved ends of a size to be engaged by the nasal passages of the patient, said tubular parts communicating with the outside.
5. A face steamer comprising an outer sheet of material of a size to engage over the face and neck of the patient, lmeans carried by the sheet to engage the htad of the paand having relatively small terminals projecting upwardly to be engaged by the nasal passages of the patient, said tubes communicating with the outside, a controllable steam pipe having a plurality of branches communicating through the outer sheet with the chamber between the inner and outer sheets at a point below the nasal tubes.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I DORA S. DAILY.
