To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and particularly to a pipe wrench, the object of the invention being to provide a wrench which may be used upon highly polished pipes without marring their polished surfaces.
In pipe wrenches it is customary to provide steel toothed jaws for their effective gripping engagement upon the pipe. These jaws, while being entirely satisfactory for effecting their desired purchase upon the pipe are extremely objectionable in that highly polished nickel or brass pipes are severely marred or scratched.
It is, therefore, a particular object of the invention to provide a wrench wherein the jaws thereof are formed of soft metal such as lead which may be engaged with the maximum friction against the pipe and operated thereon without scratching or marring the pipe.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench in which the soft metal liners of the jaws can be readily removed when worn and replaced by new liners at a very small cost.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the wrench. Fig. 2 is an-edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the liners. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the liner retaining key.
The wrench herein shown preferably includes a handle or stock 1 which terminates at one end in spaced walls 2 and a fixed jaw 3. The movable jaw 4 is provided with an arcuate shank 5 which is pivoted, at 6, between the walls 2 of the stock and at one side of the pivot 6, the shank 5 is pivoted, at 7, to one end of the actuating rod 8. The stock 1 is preferably hollow, and as shown, the actuating rod 8 is slidable in the stock and interposed between one end of the stock and the stop 9 of the rod 8 is a helical extensile spring 10 which is adapted to exert its force against the rod 8 so that the aw 4 Specification of Letters Patent.

is normally held closed against the fixed aw 3. A controlling lever 11 is pivoted, at 12, between the walls 2 of the stock of the wrench. This lever is provided with a portion 13 which is operatively associated with the rod 8 so that when the lever is actuated manually the jaw i can be moved to an open position to facilitate the attachment of the wrench to the pipe.
Each jaw of the wrench is provided with a concavity 1 1, the walls of the concavity of one jaw being arranged in opposing relation to the walls in the concavity of the opposite jaw, and as illustrated, the walls of one jaw are substantially eccentrically arranged with relation to the walls of the other jaw.
Each'of the jaws are provided with a. transversely disposed passage 14 and havlng communicating therewith at a point medially of their length and at right angles thereto a radial passage 15, the latter mentioned passage receives the lug 16 of a soft metal liner 17, the latter being of a concavoconvexed configuration, the convexity of which conforms with the concavity of the jaw as shown. The jaw is provided with a retaining wedge key 18, said key being inserted in one end of the transverse passage 14 until the same tightly binds or engages with the walls thereof, the said key being passed through the elongated slot 19, which is of a diameter less than the diameter of the passage 14', and upon the longitudinal movement of the key through the passage 14, the same will be brought to bear against the wall 21 of the slot 19 so as to effect the adjustment of the liner and the jaw to thereby insure the positive frictional engagement of the former with the latter and preventing any accidental rotation of the key 18 in the slot 19 or the passage 14'.
At one end the wedge key is provided with a head 22. At the opposite end, the key is provided with an integral threaded portion 23 on which is adjustably mounted a retaining nut 24. The adjusting nut is capable of movement on the portion 23 so as to cause the latter to operatively move in the jaw against the wall 21 of the slot 19 to effect the positive adjustment of the liner, as stated. The liner 17 is preferably constructed of lead, but it is understood that any suitable soft metal may be substituted therefor. In practice, it has been found that lead liners upon wrench jaws positively" eliminate the scratching or highly polished pipes and it has further been found that such soft metal liners are an eflee-ti-Ve" substitute for the hard steel toothed jaws commonly used on well known forms of pipe wrenches, V
