To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l VILLIAM l'l. SLAwsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Rhea and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in package ties and resides in the provision of a novel form of tie which will enable a reliable and expeditious tying of packages, bundles and the like and eliminate waste of cord.
An important object of my invention is to provide a simple, effective and inexpensive tie which is formed of a single piece of spring wire and bent in a novel manner so that cord may be secured easily and firmly about the package or bundle without necessitating knotting and in such a way that the cord may be easily untied or removed from the package.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be cheaply manufactured and prove a great saver of time and labor.
The above and additional ubjeCllS are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.
With reference to the drawings, wherein T have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corre sponding parts, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view showing my'improved tie in operative position upon a package, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my improved tie with the tie cord removed, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the tie constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a single length of spring wire that is bent intermediate but adjacent to one end to form a circular loop 2 and continued from the loop and bent back at the adjacent end to form a hook 3, the bent back portion,
forming a hook being bent angularly as at 4: at the free end to provide a flared mouth for the hook, said angular bent portion 4 being disposed in engagement with that portion of the strip 1 that is extended from the loop 2 thus forming a normally closed mouth hook. The hook 3 is designed to receive the knotted end 5 of a tie cord 6. The intermediate porion of the strip 1 extends at right angles to the loop 2 and is bent to form anumber of coils 7, said coils 7 bein considerably smaller than the one 2 and disposed upon the opposite side of the strip 1 with relation to the coil 2. The strip 1 is extended tangentially from the coils 7 and twisted to form a number of coils 8 that are disposed in a plane at right angles to the coils 7 and upon one side thereof.
In operation my improved tie is placed upon the package or bundle to be tied and the knotted end 5 of the tie cord 6 is posi tioned within the hook 3. The cord 6 is then wound about the package and moved into the coil 7 from the left to the right and from thence around the package to the right and then around the coil 7 from the right to the left. The operator then gives the cord 21 quick jerk so that it is brought under and into the coils 8 and the tying action is com pleted. with relation to each other and act to clamp the tie cord 6 securely in place.
It will be readily seen that the operation of tying a package may be had in an extremely expeditious and reliable manner and that the resiliency of the tie will enable the tying of the package to the desired degree of securing. When the operator places the tie upon the package the thumb of the left hand is to be inserted in the large loop 2 so as to hold the tie securely in the center of the package until the cord has been passed around the package once and caught in the coils 7. The large loop 2 enables the winding up of the package and provides for the carrying thereof as a person may insert one of the fingers in said loop. The large loop 2 gives the device body and permits the holding thereof when being applied to a package or bundle and gives the desired resiliency, thuls effecting a nibre reliable holding of the col In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various The coils 7 and 8 are set closely 'minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, When required, Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.
