Toall whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVILLIAM -S. HAD- AWAY, Jr., a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New Rochelle, county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to electric heating apparatus and particularly to such as is adapted for use. in the manufacture of candy.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective electric heater for general heating purposes that shall be arranged and constructed to transfer its heat largely by radiation.
Another object is to provide a heater, of the aforesaid character that shall be inexpensive to manufacture, readily adjustable in its mounting, and specially adapted for use as a candy batch heater or warmer.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be set forth hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a front elevation with certain of the parts broken away and shown in section of a heater arranged and constructed in accordance with my invention. A transverse sectional elevation of the same structure is shown in Fig. 2.
The structure illustrated comprises a stationary base or standard 10, a plurality of radiantrheater units 15, a support 20 therefor, and a casing 30 having a reflector sur face 31 and a protecting screen 32. The standard 10 comprises a bar 14 mounted on edge and a bar 11 arranged to rest flat on the surface 12 of a bench or table, and having ends extending upwardly from thesur face of bench or table at right angles to, the body of the bar. The ends of the bar 14 are bent at an angle to engage the upright'extensions 13 of the bar 11, the two bars being secured together by rivets 14'.
The casing 30 comprises a bar or rib 33, the ends of which extend between and are pivotally connected to the uprights 13 of the stationary support. The 'support20 consists of a horizontal .plate 0r partition of the casing and is suitably perforated to receive a plurality of sockets 35. Above the hor1- zontal late 34, the casing is shaped to form the re ector 31 and is open at one side except for the screen 32. Below'the horizontal partition the casing comprises a semi-cylindrical body 36 of sheet metal into which the lower ends of the terminals 37 of the sockets 35 extend. a
Each of the heater units 15 comprises a connected at one end to one terminal of the socket, and a resistance conductor 18 which surrounds the insulated rod and is interposed electrically between theouter end of tlie rod and the opposite terminal of the p ug.
support and the rib 33 is provided at one end of the rib by a pin 38 and at the opposite end of the rib by a-lever 39, one end of which is screw-threaded into the rib and extends loosely throu h a suitabre hole in the arm 13 of the standard. The arrangement of parts is such that the position of. the heater may be adjusted as a whole by turning the lever 39.
Each of the ranged and constructed in accordance with my copending application Serial Number 791,931, filed of even date herewith, and its structural details form no part of my pr ent invention. The character of the heaters does however, enter into my present invention in a fundamental way and each of the heaters is designed and constructed to operate as a radiant heater.
Assuming that a batch of candy is on the table or bench in front of the heater, the heater as a whole may be adjusted so that the reflecting surface 31 directs the radiated heat rays directly upon the batch. The barn perature of the batch is by this means raised very rapidly to the desired degree and the manufacture of the candy is correspondingly facilitated.
As shown in Fig. 1, cylindrical terminal chamber formed by the member 36 is extended to produce an end terminal chamber 40 in which is located the terminals 41 of a plurality of v control switches 42 by means of which the heater units may be connected in desired circuit relations in a well known manner. The size of the batch and its distance from the heater as it lies on the bench determines the position to which'tho heater should be adjusted to have a maximum efiect. The friction in the pivots of the heater is suilicient to hold the 16 which is adapted to be inserted inone of the sockets 35, an insulated rodi'l,
The pivotal joint between the stationary V heater units is preferably ar one end of the semi ice device in any position without interfering with its ready adjustment.
What I claim is:
1. An electric heater comprising a standard, a. casing ivotally mounted on the standard, a su stantially horizontal bar forming a part of the casing, a plurality of sockets secured to the bar, and a plurality of heater units each comprising a plug cooperating with one of the sockets, the upper part of said casing being shaped to provide a reflector for the heaters.
2. An electric heater comprising a stationary standard, having a pair of spaced uprights, a U-shaped rib pivotally mounted on the uprights of the standard, a casing secured to the rib, a substantially horizontal bar forming a part of the casing, a plurality of sockets secured to the bar and extending therethrough, and a plurality of heater units, each comprising a plug cooperating with one of the sockets, the upper part of said casing being shaped to provide a reflector for the heaters.
3. An electric heater comprising a standard, a support pivotally mounted thereon, a. casing secured to the support and having an open reflector portion and a closed terminal box, a plurality of sockets secured to the top of the terminalbox and extending therethrough, heater units removably mounted in the sockets and extending into the reflector portion, and means for adjusting the position of the support.
