To all/whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN M. ADAMS, a.

citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Metal Bedsteads, of which the following is a specifiation.

This invention relates to metal bedsteads.

As is well known, ornaments are commonly applied to the joints between different members of metal bedsteads for the purpose of imparting a neat finish and appearance to the bedstead, said ornaments, being usually made of sheet brass or other thin ductile metal.

The object of the present invention is to provide improved and simplified means for securing ornaments to other bedstead members without the use of screws, solder, or other means heretofore commonly used for this purpose.

To this end my invention comprises the various features and details of construction;

hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, in which my invention is fully illustrated, Figure 1 is a fragmentary side view of two hollow members forming part of the head or foot of a bedstead having an ornament secured thereto in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view substantially similar to Fig. 2, just before the connection is made and illustrating the manner of making the connection; and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan View on the line 44 of Fig.2.

Referring now to the drawings, the reference numerals 1 and 2 designate, respectively, members of a metal bedstead, as, for example, a tubular cross member of a head or foot of a bedstead, designated 1, and an upright rod or spindle, designated 2, connected thereto.

3 is an ornament applied to the joint between said members 1 and 2 in accordance with my invention. The ornament 3 is secured in position by means of a section 4 at one end thereof, which is inserted through and which frictionally engages the sides of a hole or opening 5 formed in the side of the hollow bedstead member 1. The

end of the bedstead member 2 is inserted through the hollow ornament 3 into the first bedstead member 1, the relation being preferably such that the member 2 will fit the hole through the section 4 of said orna ment closely and will thus operate to maintain said section 4 of the ornament 3 in frictional engagement with the side of the hole 5. As preferably constructed, the ornament 3 including the section 4 thereof is made on a slight taper, the size thereof decreasing toward its end designed to enter the hole 5. The small end ofsaid ornament is preferably made slightly smaller than the hole 5, and the designed position of said ornament is defined by contact of the surface of said tapered section with the.

sides of said hole or opening 5. The opening through the ornament 3, through which the second bedstead member 2 passes, is also tapered slightly in substantially the same manner as the outer surface thereof, the relation being such that at its outer end said hole will fit the bedstead member closely and the taper thereof being such that the initial diameter of said hole or opening at the point where the outer surface thereof contacts with the side of the hole or opening 5, will be a'slight fraction of an inch, say 1/100 of an inch, smaller than the size of said bedstead member 2 and the diameter of said section 4 beyond said point of contact with the sides of said hole 5 being still further contracted owing to the taper thereof. Thus, as the member 2 is forced through the ornament 3 into the member 1, said member 2 will first operate to expand the section 4 of said ornament outwardly into strong frictional engagement with the sides of the hole 5 and, as the end of said member 2 is forced beyond this point, will operate to eX- pand the tapered end of said section 4, forming a crimp in the same at the point where it engages the sides of the hole 4, which will operate in an obvious manner, to increase the strength of the engagement between the section 4 of said ornament and the sides of said hole 5. The initial taper of the section 4 of the ornament 3 is of advantage for the further reason that it will prevent the ornament from being pushed into the hole 5 with the member 2, as said member is forced through said ornament into the hollow member 1.

I claim 1. A bedstead comprising a first member which is hollow and is provided with a hole in the side thereof, a second member, and a hollow ornament, said ornament comprising an expansible section inserted through the hole in said hollow first member, and the second bedstead member iI iserted through said ornament into said hollow first member, the initial-'size of the section of said ornament which extends through the hole in said hollow first member being substantially the same as said hole and the hole through said section of said orna ment inserted through said holebeing initially smaller than the bedstead member which is inserted therethrough whereby inserting i said second: bedstead. member through said hollow ornament into said first bedstead member will'expand the section of said ornament within said first 1, bedstead member into strong engagement with" the sides of the hole in said first bedstead member, substantially as described.
