Be it known that I, T'nsno GLENN WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at CedarRapids, in the county of Li'nn and State of Iowa, have invented certain. new
and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses,
of which the following is a specification.
, This" invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in baling presses The present invention is an Improvement 30011 the baling press shown described, and aimed in the patent issued to J C. Fulkerson and T. .G. 'White, October 29, 1912, #1,o42,544.
According to my invention, I provide a baling press particularly adapted for the baling of empty bags, such as those that are used in the shipment of cement and the like.
The present invention has for its object to provide in connection with a baling press of the type in the above-mentioned patent, improved means whereby the bags are given a different folded position to present the bags in rounded form at the time of tying the same together.
A further object of the invention is toprovide a baling press formed of a plurality" of foldable board sections with means overlying the board sections to prevent the bags being folded from being caught in the hinge joint.
A still further object of the resentinrprovcments is to provide tie-Wire supports carried by the foldable leaf sections that will cross the ends of the tie-wires when the press is folded to present the ends in a position to be tied.
It is also the object of the present inven tion to provide a false bottom section, or a 40 section different in size, and preferably smaller, than the main press section, to be placed on the main press section and used in connection with the folding of bags smaller in size or a smaller number of bags.
5 With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the natureof the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed.

The construction so far described is what is substantially shown in the above-mentioned patent, and a material improvement is the adaptation of means toccver the hinge joint to prevent the bags or other articles from being caught therein, and at the same time reducein size the corners, to add a rounded edge to the bags, such means comprising an 1 angle plate 16 as shown in Fig. 6, having the short arm 17 received in the longitudinal slots or grooves 18 arrangedparallel and adjacent to the hinge connection 14:, as
clearly shown in Figsfl and 3. These an le plates 16 are formed of resilient material and when the side leaves 15 are foldedas' shown in Fig. 3, the plates 16 vare caused to assume the position shown in said figure, owing to the resiliency thereof, thereby reducing the sharp corners to rounded ones and covering the hinge connection to prevent the bags from being caught therein.

oted as at 24 to the cross-bar 12and outwardly as shown in Fig. 5, is a pair of arms 25 having the lower ends thereof extending downwardly to a point adjacent the guide bars 19 to be engaged by the rollers 21. The inner faces of the lower ends of the arms 25 are flattened as at 26 to adaptth'e same to lie parallel when in the position shown in Fig. 5, so that the rollers 21 enga e the flattened sides at practically a dea center to prevent the raising of the cross-head 20 without a slight upward movement being 20 imparted to the treadle 23. The arms 27 beyond the pivot point 24 are suitably curved as at 27 to provide a clearance for the side leaf sections 15, and carry at their outer ends rollers 28. Wear plates 29 are secured as 5 at to the bottom faces of the side leaf sections 15, and consist of angle plates, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 on which ride the rollers 28 carriedby the arms 25, the lower ends of the wear plates 29 being cushioned 30 by a spring 31 seated in a suitable recess formed in the leaves 15 and engaging at the other ends the wear plates. "By such a construction, the side leaf sections 15 are easily brought to theposition shown in Fig. 5 v with all unnecessary strain and wear on the parts obviated by the spring-pressed wear plates and curved arms 25.
As an improvement over the manner of holding the tie-wires shown in the aboveo mentioned patent, I provide a single piece wire clasp 32, as shown in Fig. 3. This clasp consists of a single piece of wire bent upon itself as at 33 and having the bent portion received within a socket 34 provided in 5 the inner face of the side leaves 15, the said wire being further bent to form a. pair of contacting loops 35 with the ends thereof provided with eyes 36, one of which is secured to the edge of the side leaf 15 while so the other eye is secured to the inner face of A said sectisn. Tiewires 37 are positioned on the leaf s ctions 13 and 15 and supported by the clasps the loops '35 of the clasps being directed inwardly so that the tie-wire placed therein as shown in Fig. 3, will be directed inwardly to cross the other end of the wire and be in position to be joined or tied. The present invention also employs the presser rod 38 in connection with the adjustable bolts 39 carried by the central leaf section 13 around which the bags are folded.
By reference to Fig. 5, it will be seen that there is provided afalse bottom for the press which will better enable the folding of bags of smaller size or a smaller number of bags. The construction of the false bottom is similar to the main folding leaf sec-- tions, and comprises the center section 13 having hin ed to the lateral sides thereof the side lea sections 15', the central section 13' bein slottedin a manner similar to the leaf sect1on 13 for the reception of the angle plate 16. The bottom face of the central section 13 carries cleats 18" which may have a suitable dowel connection with the main leaf section 13. It is believed t at the operation of the device will be clear] evident from the above description and s owing, and further explanation is thought unnecessary.-
While the pre erred embodiments of-the improvements are herein shown and described, I do not wish to confine! myself to the exact details of construction showh, as various forms, modifications and arrangement of the parts as shown may "be" had without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is 1. In a baling press, a table formed'of a plurality of hinged sections, and a plate It will be noted that each i mounted to overlie the hinge connection bethe central section, said central section having a longitudinal groove adjacent each side edge, and resilient angle plates mounted in the grooves and adapted to overlie the hinge connections.
3: In a baling press, a table formed of hinged sections, a presser bar rranged above the sections, pivoted arms h ing the outer ends engaging the hinged sections, and cushioned wear plates disposed between the hinged sections and the arms.
4. In a baling press, a supporting frame, a table comprising a stationary leaf section and two hinged leaf sections, resilient angle plates carried by the stationary section and overlying the hinge connections(, a removably mounted rod above the stationary section, and means for moving the hinged sections to a position at right angles to the stationary section and coiiperating to hold the hinged sections in folded position.
5. The combination with a baling press having a stationary section and two hinged sections, of a false bottom therefor, said false bottom comprisin a central section positioned above the said stationary section, side sections hinged thereto, and plates carried by thecentral section adapted to overlie the side hinge connections.
