To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. SAYER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Sharpening Rotary Blades, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of thls specification.
My invention relates to devices for sharpening rotary knives or blades and has for its object the provision of improved means which are mounted upon a rotary knife machine, which means normally are out of the ath of the blade, but which can be swung Into the path of the blade for sharpening purposes. is applicable to those machines in which a rotar knife is suitabl mounted in a framework and is used, say for meat cutting purposes.
In accordance with my invention I provide a pair of sharpening rollers normally held away from the blade, which rollers are adapted to act upon opposite sides of the blade. \Vhen it is desired to sharpen the blade, the sharpening rollers are moved radially to a position on opposite sides of the blade, a slight swinging movement of the framework carrying the rolls, then serving to cause engagement between the rolls and the blade.
I will describe one form 'of carrying out my invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side'view of a rotary blade machine provided with my improved sharpening appliances; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top view illustrating the sharpening device; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line az-a of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line Z)b of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line c-c of Fig. 2.
A machine to which my improved device can be advantageously attached comprises a framework 1 having a suitable bearing 2 carrying a shaft 3. The shaft 3 supports and causes rotation of a circular blade 4 preferably dished as shown more clearly in Fig. 1, a suitable guard 55 for a portion of the periphery of the blade being provided. The rest of the machine is not illustrated as it is not of importance so far as the sharpening devices are concerned which As stated, my improved device form the subject matter of this invention.
The rest of the machine however may be of any suitable type, such for instance as the ordinary meat cutting machine as well understood.
Upon any suitableportion of the framework of the machine, in this case the bearing 2, I mount a stem 5, .which stem may be suitably held in place by means of the bolt passing. through the opening 6 provided therefor. The stem throughout the greater portion of its length is hollow to accommodate a plunger 7, which plunger" is provided with a suitable shoulder portion 8 against which a spring 9 within the stud presses to force the plunger 7 upwardly (Fig. 3).- The plunger 7 carries at its upper extremity a cross-piece 10 uniting and carrying suitable pocketed cylindrical elements or cylinders 11 and 12. The cylinder 11 carries a rotatable plunger 13 upon which a sharpening device or roller l lis mounted. This plunger has an extension 15 of restricted diameter guided by an annular ring 16 provided within the cylinder 11. A spring 17 normally presses the plunger 13 to the left (Fig. 5). A plate 18 forms a stop for this movement of the plunger 13 to the left. From this it will be noticed that the sharpening roller 14 when coming in contact with the blade may be forced to-, ward the right (Fig. 5) against the action of the spring 17 The cylinder 12 carries a plunger 19 which has an extension 20 of restricted diameter guided by an annular ring 21. A spring 22 normally forces the plunger 19 to the right (Fig. 4:). A plate 23 is mounted upon the stud 20 against which one extremity of the spring 22 presses. This plunger 19 carries a sharpening device or roller 24 and it will be clear that when this sharpening device 24: engages the blade it may move to the left (Fig. 1) against the action of the spring 22 as may be necessary. The stem 5 also carries a horizontally projecting arm 25 upon which a cam 26 is pivotally mounted upon the stud 27. This cam has the shape as more clearly shown in the side view thereof in Fig. 1, and has at its upper extremity a handle 28. By means of this handle the cam may be rotated into the dotted position shown in Fig. 1. The cam surface acts in cooperation with a stud 29 projecting from a rearwardly extending arm 30, which arm 30 forms part of the bridge or cross-piece 10.
It will thus be seen that as the cam 26 is rotated contra-clockwise (Fig. 1), that the entire movable framework carried by the plunger 7 is forced downwardly by reason of the engagement of the stud 29 wlth the 1nterior surfaceof the cam 26. The arm 30 also carries a pin 31, which pin 31 is inclined to the vertical as shown more clearly in Fig. 1 and which cooperates with a hole 32 provided in the arm 25, which hole is slightly larger than the pin 31 and may also preferably be inclined to the Vertical. The reason for thus inclining the pin 31 will readily appear in that it is stated that as this cam 26 is operated to press the framework carried by the plunger27 downwardly, thls pm 31 co-acting with the hole 32 causes a slight rotation of this entire movable framework about the axis of the plunger 7, which rotation as the framework is moving down-- wardly is in a clockwise direction (Fig. 2). The rollers 1-1 and 24 are normally elevated above the blade 4. Now whenever it is desired to sharpen the blade, then the cam 26, for instance Fig. 1, is rotated in a contraclockwise direction to thereby depress the sharpening rolls and the framework carrying them into the dotted position in Fig. 1, whereby the blade is between the sharpening rolls so that'the rotating blade also causes a rotation of these sharpening rolls. During the movement of the cam 26 as it is pressing the framework downwardly a slight rotation of the movable framework takes place, as stated, whereby the rolls l4: and 24 after they have reached the position with the blade between them, are pressed against the opposite sides of the blade. The springs 22 and 17 of course permit a slight yielding of these sharpening devices to accommodate for inequalities in the blade or for other reasons.
It will thus be seen that a very simple structure is provided for keeping the sharpening devices out of the normal path of the blade and for bringing them into the path of the blade when it is desired to sharpen the same.
From what has been described, it is thought the nature of my invention and its extremely simple character will be entirely clear to those skilled in the art, and it will also be entirely clear that the invention is susceptible of many and various modifications.
Having however thus described one form which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device for sharpening the rotary circular knives of meat slicing machines comprising a movable framework, a pair of sharpening devices mounted upon said framework, means for moving said framework'in a line substantially radial to the knife to be sharpened, and yielding means for pressing said Sharpeners toward each other, the mountingmechanism interposed between the sharpening devices and the framework carrying-said sharpening devices along with the framework unaffected in their movement aforesaid.
2. A device for sharpening the rotary cir- Rcular knives of meat slicing machines comprising a movable framework, a pair of sharpening devices mounted upon said framework, means for moving said framework in a line substantially radial to the knife to be sharpened, and means for rotating said framework as it is being moved towgrd and away from the knife to be sharpene 3. 4. A device for sharpening the rotary circular knives of meat slicing machines comprising a movable framework, a pair of sharpening devices mounted upon said framework, a cam for moving said framework in a line substantially radial to the knife to be sharpened, and yielding means for pressing said sharpeners toward each other.
5. A device for sharpening the rotary circular knives of meat slicing machines comprising a movable framework, a pair of sharpening devices mounted upon said framework, a cam for moving said framework in a line substantially radial to theknife to be sharpened, and means for rotat-- ing said framework as it is being moved towarid and away from the knife to be sharpene 6. A device for sharpening the rotary circular knives of meat slicing machines comprising a movable framework, a pair of sharpening devices mounted upon said framework, a cam for moving said framework in a line substantially radial to the knife to be sharpened, and means inclined to the direction of motion of said framework for rotating said framework as it is being moved toward and away from the knife to be sharpened.
9. A device for sharpening the rotary circular knives of meat slicing machines comprising a movable framework, a pair of sharpening devices mounted upon said framework, an internal cam for moving said framework in a line substantially radial to the knife to be sharpened, and yielding means for pressing said sharpeners toward each other.
