UNITED s'rnrns raran'r OFFICE.
AUGUST H. F. KURRE, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
ATTACHMENT FOR MOVING-PICTURE IVLACI-IINES.
Application filed June 17, 1914.
To all whom-it may concern:
new and improved attachment for moving picture, machines whereby the title, the text' or other-legend. is supplied to" the pictures projected on-the screen.
In order to accomplish the desired result use isle-manor a diaphanous band provided with the legend, and means for drawing the band across the film at the. projecting areaof the moving picture machine to cause a simultaneous projecting of'the film matter and the legend of the band on the screen.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying .drawirigs forming a part 01" this specification, in which similar characters ol reference indicate corresponding parts in both views;
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a moving picture machine provided with the attachment; and. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan vieof the same.
In the housing A of a moving picture ma chine of any approved construction is arthis ranged the usual source of light B, and on the front of the casing A is mounted the objective C for projecting the pictures or other matter on the film I) onto a distant screen. The-.film D moves vertically in a guide E forming part of the casing A, and the film D is moved intermittently past the objective C by the use of an intermittent mechanism such as is common in moving picture machines. As shown, for instance, intermittent mechanism consists of sprocket Wheels F engaging the rows of apertures I) on the sides 01' the film D the sprocket Wheels F being secured on a shaft F journaled in the housing A. On the shaft F is fastened a star Wheel G engaged by a detent H setured on a shaft H" journaled in the housing A and provided at one outer end with a pinion H in mesh with a gear wheel H secured on a shaft H journale-d on the housing and provided with a crank arm H under the control of the operator of the machine. Thus when the crank Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1215.
SerialNo. 345,612.
arm H is turned an intermittent rotary motion is given to the sprocket-Wheels F by the mechanism just described so' that the film D is fed intermittently past-the objec tive C.
Acrhss the film D, preferablyinthe rear thereof and at the projecting area of the.
moving picture machine, extends a diaphanous tape, band or web I, provided "with titles', text or other legends pertaining to the subject matter on the film D. The band I unwinds from a horizontally-disposed drum or spool J journaled 'on a bracket J attached to one side of the housing A, and the said band I Winds upon a winding-u drum K journaled on a bracket K attache to, the other side of the housing A; --On the underside of the drum K is secureda vorm. wheel- L in mesh with a worm L held on a shaft L journaled' in suitable bearings arranged on the housing A, and on the said shaft L is secured a pulley N over which passes a belt N also passing around apulley N secured on the driving shaft H of themoving picture inachine. Now when the driving shaft H is rotated as previously explained then a rotary motion is transmitted by the pulley N belt N, and pulley N to the worm shaft If which by the worm L and the worm Wheel L rotates the Winding-up drum K whereby the hand I is wound up on the drum K and is hence drawn across the pro jectinq area. of the moving picture machine so that the legends on the said band I are projected onto the screen together With the subject matter of the film D. .As the legends pertain to the subject matter of the film D it is evident that the spectators While observing the projected pictures can also read the projected legend pertaining to the subject matter of the pictures.
The diaphanousi band I is so arranged relative to each film picture in projection at the time, that it extends either across the top or the bottom of the picture, as desired,- it bein understood that the drums or spools J and K are located correspondingly. The
band I is very-narrowso that the space oc- Winding-up drum K from the driving shaft of the moving picture machine, it is evident BEST AVAILABLE COP" that other devices may be employed for accomplishing the same result and conseuently I do not limit myself to theparticular means shown and described above.- Having thus described my invention, 1
-- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
-L An attachment for a moving picture machine, comprising a, diaphanouslband provided with a legend pertaining to the subject matter of the film of the moving picture machine, and means for moving the,
said band across the fihn at the projecting area of the moving picture machine to cause a. simultaneous projecting of the film matter and the legend of the band. K
2. In combination with a moving picture machine, an unwindin a winding-up drum, the said drums eing mounted on opposite sides of the said moving picture 'mw.
chine, a diaphanous band unwinding from the saidunwinding. drum and windin up on the said winding-up drum, the said and being provided with a legend and the band passing across the film at the -projecting 3. In combination with a moving picture machine, an unwinding drum, a winding up drun1, the sald drums being mounted on 0pposite sides of the said moving picture ma.-'- chine, a diaphanous band. unwinding from the said unwinding drum and windmg up on the said winding-up drum, the said band being provided with a. legend and the band passing across the film at the projecting area of the moving picture machine, and means driven from the tiinrdriving incohenism of the moving picture nmchine and connected with the said windingup drum to rotate the latter to wind up the said band and to draw the same across the filmiin unison therewith.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
