Be it known that I, JOHN F. OConuon, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of 5 lllinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buffer Plate Supporting Means, of which the following is a speci cation.
T his invention relates to improvements in O bpii'cr plate supporting means.
The object of the invention is means more substantial to provide plates of. vestibule passenger cars to the end that the vestibule diaphragms may also be better su 'iported, the arrangement being such that the butler plate is connected to the side stems of thebutier devices.
Another ject of the invention is to provide a connection between the bufier plate and the supporting side stems therefor which may be adjusted to compensate for wear.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices an in the novel combinations of the parts an de ices herein shown, described or claimed.

As shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, the buffer plate which is of substantially angular form, has secured thereto near each end, brackets 24, each bracket having a downwardly extended hollow truncated conical member 25. The ends of the stems 18 are provided with correspondingly shaped conical recesses 26 in which the conical portions .25 are seated, as shown. To hold the parts in position an also to provide means for taking up the wear, a' bolt 27 and nut 28 are provided for each connection between a side stern an buii'er. plate, the nuts being adjustable on the bolts and held in adjusted position by means of cotters 29. As will be understood, the wear which occurs between the various parts will be such as to require the connection bebuffer plate to compensate for vertical and longitudinal adustment which is provided for by the coneshaped members 26 and correspondingly shaped sockets in the side stems and bolts and nuts.
From the preceding description it will be seen that the connection which I have provided between the butter plate carrying the foot plate, and the side stems is of substantial form, the buffer plate is permitted angular movement relatively to the side stems 5 as necessitated in the operation of the cars; wear between the parts .may be taken up from time to time by means of the nuts thereby minimizing sagging and rattling of the parts; and the'diaphragm face'plate an other pa rts which are supported by the buffer plate, are more substantially supported than with arrangements hitherto commonly in use.

In a car provided with butting mechanism having, side stems, the combination with a buffer plate and means connecting said plate with the ends of means permitting vertical and longitudinal adjustment between said stems and said plate, substantially as specified.
2. In a car, the combination with a but-'- ter plate, of buffer side stems, and means for attaching saidplate to the stems, said means including a tapered member seated in .a correspondingly shaped socket, substantially as specified.
3. In a car, the combination with abufter plate, of buffer side stems, and means for attaching said plate to the stems, said means including conical members secured to the buffer plate and seated in correspondingly shaped sockets in the ends of said side stems, substantially as specified.
