MERRILL R. LAOKEY, OF DELAVAN, WISCONSIN.
BEARING-SGRAPER.
Application filed February 17, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MERRILL R. LAOKEY, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Delavan, in the county of l/Valworth and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bearing-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention is an improved device for use in scraping bearings and other like work, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is cheap and simple, which may be readily used in connection with a breast drill or hand brace for scraping bearings and in which the cutting knives may be adjusted toward and from each other according to the size of the bearing in which the device is used.
The invention consists in the construction combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly a longitudinal sectional view of a bearing scraper constructed in accordance with my inven tion. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 01-64 of Fig. 1.. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the cutting blades on the plane indicated by the line H of Fig. 1.
In accordance with my invention I pro vide a hollow bar 1 which is preferably rectangular in cross section as here shown, is closed at the bottom, sides, top and one end and is open at the opposite end as at 2. The bottom 3 of the hollow bar is provided with a centrally located longitudinal slot 4. On the upper or outer side of the hollow bar, at the center thereof, is a shank 5 which is provided with a cross sectionally rectangular tapered end 6 which is adapted to be clutched in a breast drill or hand brace or by the clutch of a drill press. I also provide a pair of cutting blades 7 which are approximately of oblong rectangular form cross sectionally and each of which has its outer edge beveled as at 8 so that cutting edges 9 are formed and these blades pass Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 819,297.
through the slot l in the bottom of the hollow bar and said blades are provided at their upper ends with heads 10 which operate and lit in said hollow bar and bear on the bottom thereof. A yoke bar 11 extends across the open end 2 of the hollow bar and is provided with arms 12 which bear on opposite sides of the hollow bar and secured thereto by screws 18.
A screw shaft 14 is swiveled as at 1516 in hearings in the closed end of the hollow bar and in the yoke bar 11 and is provided at one end with a cross sectionally rectangular head 17 which may be engaged by a suitable handle, wrench or the like to enable the said screw shaft to be turned. The screw shaft is provided with right and left hand screw threads 1819 which extend from its center nearly to its ends and which respectively engage corresponding threaded openings with which the heads of the cutting blades are provided, the said screw shaft extending through said heads. By turning the screw shaft in one direction the cutting blades may be moved toward each other and by turning the screw shaft in the reverse direction they may be moved from each other and hence they may be spaced at any desired distance apart according to the diameter of the bearing in which the device is used.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim The herein described bearing scraper comprising a hollow bar closed at its upper side and at one end, open at the opposite end and having a bottom provided with a longitudinal slot which also extends to the open end, said bar being further provided at its back with a centrally located shank by means of which said bar may be turned, a shaft extending longitudinally through the hollowed bar and swiveled in the closed end thereof, a yoke detachably secured to the hollow bar at and extending across the opening and said shaft being also swiveled in said yoke and said shaft being provided with right and left hand screw threads ex tending from its center and a pair of cutting blades having shanks extending In testimony whereof I afiix my signature throughhanld 1guidlid in izlhelslot in the1 bodiliin presence of two witnesses.
