THE MORRIS PETERS 60,. PHOTO-LITHO., WASHINGTON, D. CA
ldblllllilltl@ T01-IN F. PALMER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER.
Application led August 14, 1914.
T0 all iti/mln t may Concern Be it known that l, JoHN F. PALMER, a citizen of Ithe United States, and resident of lil'ilwaulree, in the county of Milwaukee and State of `Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roll- Paper Holders; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and .exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical and eflieient means by which to prevent the unwinding of more than a predeter mined length of paper toweling or toilet paper from a. roll of the same upon a spindle having supports that may constitute arms of ay wall-bracket.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a plan view partly in horizontal section of a wall-bracket, a spring-controlled rotary spindle detachably connected to arms of the bracket, the spindle being limited as to rotary movement, and a paper-roll core having detachable rigid connection with said spindle the plane of the sectioning being indicated by line 1-,1 Fig 4; Fig. 2, a
solpartly sectional elevation of the bracket indicated by line 2 2 in Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and t transverse sectional views respectively indicated by lines 3 3, and l---L in Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a front elevation partly in section illustrating details of the mechanism herein specified, and Fig. 6, a plan view of a. fragment of the paper-roll core illus trating a clip of a spindle-connecting device therewith.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, T indicates the back and S the forwardly extending arms of a wallbracket preferably provided with horizontal slots 9 in said back thereof for the engagement of fastening-bolts 10. The outer ends of the bracket-arms are provided with eyes. One of the eyes is engaged by the outer end of an arbor 11 on which a spindle 12 is loose, and a slidable bolt 13 carried by the spindle engages another of the eyes to turn therein. The spindle is a casting of cylindrical con tour having open sides and braced at inter vals between its heads by transverse partitions. The arbor 11 extends through one end and an adjacent partition of said spindle, the other end and another partition of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915..
serial No. 856,732.
said spindle being engaged by the bolt 13. Surrounding the arbor and fastened at one end thereto a spiral spring 1d, the other end :of the spring being attached to said spindle. Arranged on the bolt 13 is a spiralspring l5, the outer end of which opposes a pin 16, extending through said bolt7 its other end being opposed to the .spindle partit-ion through which said bolt extends. EX- tending longitudinally of the spindle and integral therewith at one end of the same are diametrically opposite ribs 17 that engage grooves fashioned in a sheet-metal split-ring 18 set in one end of the hollow core 19 of a roll of paper toweling or toiletpaper, the roll being indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1, 3 and 4. The ring is provided with a flange 18 parallel to the roll core, and prongs of the flange are struck into said core to thereby fasten the same to said ring.
Keyed or otherwise fast on the arbor 11, between a support for the same and the adjacent head of the spindle, is an arm 20 in the path of a stop 21 on an end of the spindle, and the arm is provided with a lug engaging a groove 23 in said support, whereby said arbor is held against rotation.
lllhen the mechanism herein specified is organized for paper toweling, a draw on said toweling against resistance of the spring 14 will result in approximately one revolution of the spindle and roll therewith, whereby the amount of paper designed for one towel is unwound. This length of toweling being torn off, there is an automatic reverse motion of the spindle and roll due to expansion of the spring 14.
ln an organization of the mechanism for toilet-paper, less unwind of the paper than for towel is desirable and to that end another stop is provided on the end of the spindle having the stop 9.1, the second stop being shown as 24 in Fig. 5.
A roll of paper having been exhausted its core is torn away to provide for access to the bolt 13, and this bolt being retracted the spindle may be readily removed from the supports to permit withdrawal of said core therefrom and the substitution of another cored roll on said spindle.
I claim:
l. The combination of supports, a springcontrolled rotary spindle in connection with the supports and provided at one end with titl external longitudinal ribs, means limiting rotation of the spindle, and a ring having grooves engaged by the spindle-ribs, the ring being one that is rigidly secured inside of one end of a paper roll core.
2. The combination of supports, a springeontrolled rotary spindle in connection with the supports and provided at one end With external longitudinal ribs, means limiting rotation of the spindle, and a flanged ring having grooves engaged by the spindle-ribs, the ring being one that is set in one end of a paper core roll to Which it is fastened by bending of its flange thereon.
3. The combination of supports, a springcontrolled rotary spindle in connection with the supports and provided at one end with external longitudinal ribs, means limiting rotation of the spindle, and a grooved device engaged by each of the spindle-ribs and which is rigidly secured inside of one end of a paper roll core.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of `Wiseonsin in the presence of two Witnesses.
