CAR-DOOR.

To all whom, it may concern: 1
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. ETIMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mapleton, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
T he invention relates to improvements in car doors, and more particularly to doors 01 that type used in connection with cars for hauling grain or material of a like nature.
One object of the present invention is to provide a door of this character which shall be made of upper and lower sections and adapted to be held against the root of a car and out of the door opening when desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a car door in which the sections may be pivotally connected to the sides of the door opening for swinging movement; the connection being provided with means whereby the door may be detached therefrom for the purpose of adapting the car to various kinds of material.
A further object of this invention is to provide a supplemental door for use in conjunction with the main door and positioned below the main door whereby coal and other heavy materials may be discharged or shoveled from the bottom of the car without displacing the main door.
With the above and other objects in view, which shall appear as the description progresses, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates the roof of the car, 2 the floor, and 3 the side of the car provided with a door opening 4.
At each side of the door opening 4-, the side 3 of the car is provided with door posts 5 arranged interiorly of the car and extending, preferably, the full height there of. The door posts 5 adjacent the opening 4 are formed with rabbeted or cut away portions 6 which extend from a point adj acent the bottom of the posts to the top of the same.
The door, in the present instance com prises upper and lower sections 7 and 8. On its rear surface the lower section 8 oi the door is provided with lugs 9, which latter are perforated transverse theirlength and are arranged adjacent the opposite side edges of the said section. Pivotally secured to the outer edge of the door posts 5 and above the sections 7 and 8. are a pair of supporting members designated bv the letter B. The supporting members B are made of metal or any other suitable material and are identically constructed. and each comprise a main bar 10 to the lower end of which is nivotally connected a latch member C. which latter includes a retaining strip 11 provided with a transverse opening and pivoted upon one side of the bar 10. Arranged within the opening in the retaining'strip 11 is a locking pin 12 formed with a transverse o ening 13.
Pivoted to the opposite side oi the bar 10 and in parallel relation with the retaining strip 11 is a locking strip 14. the lower end of which is cut away as at 15 for the purpose of receiving the locking pin 12. The
rear wall of the cut away portion 15 is provided with a key 16 designed to enter the opening 13 in the pin 12 whereby to lock the supporting member B to the lower section of the door. From this construction it will be seen that the pin 12 carried by the retaining strip 11 is passed through the opening in the lug 9 after which the locking strip 14 .is swung on its pivot and into engagement with the pin 12 thereby locking the section 8 to the supporting member B so that the said section may ;be .supported within the door opening 1.
At its opposite vertical side edges the lower section 8 of the door is provided with bindings C, each of which comprises a base plate 17 and a retaining plate 18. The plate 17 has one end secured to the outer surface of the section 8 of the door and projects laterally therebeyond, the projecting portion terminating in a keeper 19. The 5 plate 18 is of substantially Z-shape and has a long arm 20 designed to engage the keeper l9 in the plate 17. Theshorterarm of the Z-shaped-plate 18 terminates-in alinement with the secured end of the plate 17 and is provided with an opening alini-ng with an opening in the plate 17, both of said openings being designed to receive a bolt 21 whereby the bindings C may be secured to the edges of the section 8 of the door. These bindings G are designed for engagement with the rabbeted portion 6 of the door posts 5 and are heldtherein bymeans of sliding plates'22 arranged upon the inner side of the posts 5 and slidable upon bolts 23. The plates 22 are provided with slots 24E having horizontal portions 25 terminating in upwardly inclined portions '26 whereby upon the release of the plates 22 the same may gravitate to their closing positions upon the bolts23 due to the inclinedportion 26 of theslot "24 thereby'securely holding the section'8 ofthedoor A in closed position. The upper section 7 of the door A has itslower longitudinal edgeofi'set to provide a flange 27 designed to engage the inner surface of thesection 80f the door, the ofiset portion serving tosupport the section '7 upon the section'8. Adjacent its upper edge the section 7 is provided upon its inner surface with eyes 28, each of which is designed to receive oneend; of oneof a pair of supporting rods 29. One end of the 'rods 29 is pivotally-securedto the door lintel above the pivotal connection of the member B and these rods areprovided at their opposite ends with hooked terminals 30 which latter pass through the eyes28 of the section 7 and are removable therefrom.
The lowersection '8 of the door A is pro.- vided with an outlet opening'3l controlled by a sliding door 32 whereby the grain or other material may be discharged from the car as is obvious.
From theforegoing it .will'be seen that the upper section 7 of the door maybe swung inwardly and connected, by any suitable means, to the inner wall ofthe roof 1 of the car, after the corn or other material, lcontained' within the car, has been discharged through the openings 31 After the door section Thas been removed from the passes a staple 38.
uncover the rabbeted portions 6 of the door posts 5, and the section 8 of the door swung upwardly against the roof of the car and supported thereby in any suitablevmanner whereby access may be had to the lower part secured to its upper face an extension 37 designed to overlap the section 34 and provided with an opening through which The free end of the section 3 is provided uponits front face with an enlargement 39 designed to "lie flush with the section 37 in the closed position of the door and provided with a hasp 40 adapted to engage the staple 38 whereby the door maybe locked in its closed position. At its ends, the supplemental door D is provided with substantially tJ-shaped wear plates ll which latter embrace the ends of the supplemental door and are designed to be inserted between the cleats 33' upon the door posts 5. This supplemental door D is more particularly designed for use when the car is carrying coal or. other heavy materials so that the said material may be shoveled or taken from the bottom of the car thereby obviating the labor incident to shoveling out the contents above the section 7 of the door A. From this construction it will be seen that upon disengaging the hasp from the staple, the sec- ;tion 34 will be forced outwardly by the pressure of the material within the car, and the section 35 inwardly whereby the supplemental door will be removed from the door opening.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is: a
1. The combination witha car having a door opening therein, and door posts mounted adjacent said door opening, of a door section, supporting members pivotally secured to the door'posts, latch members carried by said supporting members and adapted to engage the door section to support the same within the door opening. each of saidlatch members'including a retaining strip, a locking pin carried byi'said strlp,
and alocking strip movable relatively'to the retaining strip and adapted to engage the :locking pin to hold the supporting members to thedoor section.
2. The combination with .a car'having a Gil ' provide a keeper, and a retaining plate secured to the side of the door opposite from the base plate and extended beyond the adjacent edge of the base plate and of sub- 10 stantially Z-shape andhaving the free edge thereof in engagement with the keeper.
