ANTOINE FLAVEN-MIGALET, F ALLEVABD, FRANCE.
TOOL-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1915.
Application filed August 14, 1913. Serial No. 784,841.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTOINE FLAVEN- MIGALET, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Allevard, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a reinforced handle for tools, such as pickaxes, spades, turf-cutters and the like and is intended to avoid the too frequent breakage of the ordinary handles which generally occurs slightly above the socket of the tool.
The handle according to the present invention is provided along a portion of its length with a recess in which is located a metal tube in contact with the walls of the recess and the interior of which is provided with a wooden core. It may furthermore be provided with an outer circular band preventing the damaging of the wood of the handle at the commencement of the socket of the tool owing to contact with stones or friction against the ground, the wearing away of the wood at this spot being in many cases the reason of the breakage of the handle. In order to fit this band the handle may be pressed by passing between two grooved cylinders which exactly reduces it to the dimensions of the interior of the circular band, so that the handle will not shrink after the band has been fitted, but remains perfectly connected to the band. This operation is for the purpose of closing up the pores of the wood and furthermore permits of obtaining the maximum resistance of the handle.
I will now describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings which show several forms of construction by way of example, and wherein Figure 1 is a partial axial section of one form of construction. Fig. 2 is a cross section along the line AA of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a partial axial section on a larger scale than the former.
According to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that b is a cylindrical metal tube which is inserted in a corresponding cylindrical recess formed in the handle a, the diameter of this recess being equal to the outer diameter of the tube and the length equal to that of this latter. The interior of the tube is provided with a wooden core 0. At (Z a metal stop pin, the upper portion d of which is cylindrical and threaded, is situated in the latter, whereas its lower portion (Z in the form of a hooked tetrahedral wedge penetrates into the core a. The pin thus formed is for assuring the connection of the core to the rest of the handle, this connection being furthermore reinforced by a wedge e or by a screw situated in the other end of the core 0.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed I declare that what I claim is 1. A tool handle adapted to be inserted in a socket, comprising in combination, a ban dle member having therein a longitudinally disposed cylindrical recess, a cylindrical V metal tube disposed in said recess, a wooden core disposed within said cylindrical metal tube, and means disposed-in said wooden core and handle member for securing said core against longitudinal movement.
2. A tool handle having a cylindrical recess disposed longitudinally thereof, a cylindrical metal tube disposed in said recess, a wooden core disposed within said cylindrical metal tube, and means disposed at either end of said core for securing the same against longitudinal movement.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
