To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN N. HOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sale Creek, in the county of Hamilton, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propelling Mechanism for Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to propelling mechanism for boats.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a propelling mechanism for boats which can be readily associated with boats of the small type such as row boats so as to dispense with the use of oars as a propelling medium.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of con struction and in the arrangement and com bination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure l is a plan view of a fragment of a boat having the improved propelling mechanism associated therewith; Fig. 2, a side view of what is shown in Fig. 1 with the hull of the boat in section; Fig. 3, a front view of the propelling mechanism detached; Fig. 4, a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3;
5, a plan view of the propelling mechanism; Fig. 6, a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3; Fig. 7, a section on the line 77 of Fig. 4; Fig. 8, a vertical section through one of the bearings of the driving shaft of the mechanism; Fig. 9, a section on the line 99 of Fig. 8, and Fig. 10, a perspective view of the connection between the mechanism and the boat side.
Referring to the drawings 15 indicates the hull of a boat including a shaft log 16 and having mounted thereon a rudder 17.
The improved propelling mechanism is supported within the boat upon suitable base beams 18 and said mechanism is shown as comprising side members 19 and 20 secured together in spaced relation by cross members 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26. These Specification of Letters Patent.

side members and cross members constitute the frame of the propelling mechanism and said frame is anchored upon the beams 18 by means of securing devices attached to the outer sides of respective side member 19 and 20. Each of these securing devices comprises bearings 27 and 28 mounted upon the outer sides of each of the side members 19 and 2 rivotally mounted between the bearings 27 and 28 is a frame 29 including a cross member 30 connecting the free ends of the sides of said frame. 'l'his cross member 30 is provided with a threaded opening 31 in which is engaged a bolt 32 having a squared portion. 33 disposed in slight spaced relation to the head 34 of said holt. Loosely engaged on the bolt between the squared portion 33 and the head 34 is a bracket 35 embodying a ti-shaped portion including arms 36 and 37 adapted to be disposed in embracing relation to the side of the boat. Mounted in the arm 37 are set screws 38 whereby the bracket may be rigidly secured to the bolt as shown. By screwing the bolt 32 into the cross meitnbers 30 it will be ob vious that the frame of the propelling mechanism will be held firmly upon the beams 18. Mounted upon the cross members 21 and 23 are inverted V-shaped members 39 which are held in spaced relation to each other by cross members 40.
Mounted upon the cross member 22 on the outer side of each of the members 39 are brackets 41 and 42 and journaled in the members 39 and the brackets 41 and 42 is a power shaft 43. Fixed upon the shaft 43 between each pair of brackets 41 and 42 is a ratchet wheel 44. The upper ends of the brackets 41 and 42 are recessed as at 45 and engaged in these recesses and pivoted upon the shaft 43 are the arms of forked operating levers 46, said levers being associated respectively with respective pairs of brackets 41 and 42. Pivoted on each lever 46 is a pawl 47 operatively engaged with the adjacent ratchet wheel 44 so that when the levers 46 are moved toward the stern of the boat rotation will be imparted to the shaft 43. while opposite movement of said levers will be ineffective with respect to the shaft 43.
Pivotally mounted upon the cross member 24 are operating levers 48 and 49 which are connected to respective levers 46 by means of links 50. The levers 48 and 49 move in guide frames 51 and 52 respectively, said guide frames being supported from the side members 19 and 20 and serving to limit the movement of the levers 48 and 49 in either direction. By this construction it will be obvious that upon oscillating the levers 48 and 49 the shaft 43 will be rotated.
Rotatably mounted on the upper ends of the members 39 is a shaft 53 which has fixed thereon between the members 39 a gear 54 meshing with a gear 55 fixed on the shaft 43. Also fixed on the shaft 53 between the members 39 is a sprocket wheel 56.
Journaled in roller bearings 57 mounted on the upper edges of the side members 19 and 20 is a drive shaft 58. Fixed on this drive shaft 58 adjacent the inner sides of the side members 19 and 20 respectively'are lly wheels 59 and 60. Fixed on the shaft 58 in line with the sprocket wheel 56 is a sprocket wheel 61 and traveling on the sprocket wheels 56 and 61 is a sprocket chain 62.
Fixed on the shaft 58 adjacent the inner end of the fly wheel 59 is a sprocket wheel 63, while another sprocket wheel 64 is fixed on the shaft 58 adjacent the inner end of the fly wheel 60.
Journaled between the side members 19 and 20 and disposed between the cross mem here 22 and 21 is a transmission shaft 65 which has fixed thereon a sprocket wheel 66 inline with the sprocket wheel 64 and traveling on the sprocket wheels 64 and 66 is a sprocket chain 67. Also fixed upon the shaft 65 is a sprocket wheel 68 disposed in alinement with the sprocket wheel 63 and traveling on the sprocket wheel 63 and 68 is a sprocket chain 69. Fixed on the shaft 65 between the members 39 is a beveled gear 7 O for a purpose that will presently appear.
Rotatably, mounted in the shaft log 16 is a propeller shaft 71 the forward end of which is supported in a bearing 7 2 mounted upon the cross member 22 and has fixed thereon a beveled gear 73 meshing with the beveled gear 70. From the foregoing construction it will be obvious that upon oscillation of the levers 48 and 49 the shaft 43 will be rotated. The rotation of this shaft 43 will in turn be transmitted through the various connections heretofore described to the shaft 65 and the rotationof the latter shaft will through the medium of the meshing gears 70 and 73 effect a rotation of the shaft 71 and the propeller 75 to propel the boat. 7
It will be noted that the propelling mechanism is protected by a cover 76 secured upon the edges of the side members 19 and 20, while a panel 77 is secured to the forward edges of said side members to additionally protect said mechanism.
