DUMP-CAR-DOOR-OPERATING GEAR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN F. STREIB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Avalon, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Car-Door-Operating Gears, of which the'following is a specification.
Anobject of the present invention is to provide improvements in that class of door operating mechanism for dump cars forming the subject-matter of the invention of Charles A. Lindstrom, covered by Patent No. 805,920, granted November 28, 1905, and entitled car door mechanism.
A specific object of the present invention is to provide modifications of the mechanism shown, described and claimed in the said patent.
Still more specifically stated, an object of the present invention is to provide a. mechanism of the type referred to, in which the connection between the door-operating crank and the discharge door is composed wholly of bar links and comprises no chains.
In dump car door operating mechanisms,
- some engineers object to the use of chains between parts between which must be maintained a constant relation, as it is a wellknown fact that chains are liable to stretch under strain which is apt to disturb the relative positions of the parts. Such a mechanism is clearly described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts, andin which 1 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a car equipped with the improved mechanism, showing the car sheeting broken away to more clearly illustrate the subjectmatter of the invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the middle portion of the car, showing the location of the mechanism transversely of the car; Fig. 3 is' a plan view of the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4 is a detail view showing only the improved portion of the mechanism shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a slightly modified construction; Fig. "6 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing such modified construction, and Fig. 7 is Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring now in detail to the drawings and to the form of mechanism illustrated 1n Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, 1 represents the center sills of the car, 2 the drop doors, 3 the beam connecting the drop doors in pairs, there being four drop doors shown for closing each hopper of the car, 4 is the longitudinal A shaped ridge at the center of the car and mounted on the center sills 1, 5 is the operating shaft, 6 the usual ratchet wheel mounted thereon to be engaged by the ratchet 7 which is held in placeby a cam 8. 9 is the chain connecting shaft 5 with a crank-operating drum 10, which is preferably made integral with a crank frame or door-operating lever which consists of spaced crank arms 11 supported by trunnions 12, one of said trunnions being integral with and projecting from drum 10. Trunnions 12 are seated in open bearings 13. Crank arms 11 are of suitable width and are connected to one side of the vertical plane of the trunnions 12 by an integral web 14 to provide a recess in the crank frame to receive the connection between the crank frame and the doors, hereinafter described, and to form a natural lock against automatic opening of the doors. The bearings 13 are open bearings, the opening in the bearings however being arranged at the side and at an angle to the line of strain on the trunnions 12 during the operation of the gear, so that the trunnions will be prevented fromjumping out of their bearings. The connection between the crank frame and the doors 2 consists solely of bar links 15. As shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, there are two pairs of vertical bar links 15 pivoted at their lower ends to beams 3 and pivoted at their upper ends to an equalizing lever or bar 16, which in turn is pivoted to the extensions of the crank arms 11. WVhen the discharge doors are raised, a pivot which connects the crank arms 11 to the equalizing lever or bar 16 stands slightly beyond the vertical line of the crank frame axis ortrunnions 12, or, in other words, beyond the dead center of the crank frame and in the position of the showing such parts and one pair of links has passed comis not permitted to make a complete revolution in the closing direction, hence the doors "are lockedagainst automatic opening.
The operation of the mechanism thus far described and illustrated in Figs. ,1 to 1 inclusive, hardly needs description, but briefly stated is as follows: Assuming the doors to be closed, cam 8 is lifted and ratchet 7 disengaged fromthe ratchet wheel 6, whereupon shaft 5 is operated by the crank in thedirection of the arrow "(F 1), whereupon the chain 9 turns the drum Mind the crank frame until the parts are past the dead center, whereupon the balance of the opening movement will be automatic. The advantage of the equalizing bar is thatit insures a perfect closing of both doors, each of which will act in closing independent of the other, so that if one door should be slightly obstructed it will not prevent complete closing of the other, or if one door reaches a closed position before the other, by reason of a slightly warped state, the equalizingbar 16 will permit the other door to be completely closed. As there is no chain embodied in the connection between the crank arms 11 and the doors'2, it is obvious that'a "constantrelation will be maintained between the crank frame and the doors 2. i
in Figs. 5., 6 and 7, I have shown .aslight .deviation from the hereinbefore described mechanism. In these figures the equalizing bar or lever 16 isiconnected to the crank frame by a pair of vertical links 17, which in turnarepivoted to the arms 11. Arms 11 are narrower in this form .of mechanism and the connecting web 14; is at the upper end of the arms 11 and a separate stop or angle l8 is provided, suitably mounted on the inner faces of the center sills 1 against which "the web 1% is adapted to bear after the crank frame *has passed the dead center to prevent a completion of a revolution in the closing direction bythe crank frame.

In a dump car door gear, a pair of discharge doors, a crank comprising a pair of arms connected at one side of the crank, a bar link pivoted directly to the outer end of said crank and forming a compensating device and adapted to be received between the arms thereof, and bar links connecting said first-mentioned link with the doors.

bar link pivoted to the outer end of said crank and adapted to be received between the arms thereof, bar links connecting said first mentioned link With the doors, one of said links forming an equalizing device, and means for limiting the movement of said crank.
15. In a car door operating mechanism, a pair of drop doors, an operating crank for raising said doors and a bar link connection pivotally connected to said crank and doors and comprising an equalizing device, said equalizing device being directly connected to said crank and means for limit ing the movement of said crank.
16. In a dump car door gear, a shaft, an arm on said shaft, a pair of dump doors, links connected to said doors, and an equalizing device directly connected to said arm and links.
17. In a dump car door gear, an operated shaft and an operating shaft, a crank on said operated shaft, an equalizing device directly connected to said crank, a pair of dump doors, links connected to said doors and equalizing device, and means for limiting the movement of said crank.
18. In a dump car door gear, drop doors, a crank for operating said doors, an equalizing device extending in a direction longitudinally of the car and directly connected to said crank, vertically disposed bar links connecting said doors and crank, and means for limiting the movement of said crank.
