Description

J. L. DEVANEY.
HAIR CURLER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. s 1914 1,121,719, Patented Dec.22,1914.
JOHN L. DEV'ANEY, OFCHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAIR-CURLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '22, 1914.
Application filed February 6, 1914. Serial No. 816,955.
To all whom 1'2- may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. Dnvawnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. lid?) Grand Boulevard, in the city of Chicago. county' of \Ioolt, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hair- Curler, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of hair curlers shown as cold curlers, wherein a strand of hair is set or curled by winding it spirally about the curler, with means for locking the end of the strand thereto so that the curler will be su, ported on the strand during the time required to curl the hair.
The object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple and BCOHOYlllCill curler for the purpose set forth, and one in which the end of the strand of hair may he readily fixed or locked to the curler so as to lock the curler to the strand.
In the drawings :Figure l is a perspective view of a curler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 illustrates the position of the strand between the members of. the curler before the strand is wound thereon. Fig. 3 illustrates the strand after it has been wound upon the curler, but before the free end thereof has been locked thereto. Fig. 4 shows the free end of the strand locked between the arms of the curler.
As shown in the drawings, B, B designate the two arms of the curler, which are preferably made of flat spring steel, and of a single piece of such material. The said arms are connected at their closed ends by an eye or how 6 of general C-shape, with the arms extending in diverging relation from the ends of the C-shaped bow, the arms normally assuming the diverging position shown in Fig. 1. Each armis provided at its outer end with a curved strand locking portion 6, Z), the curved portion of one of said arms being complemental to and fitting the curved portion of the other arm. The terminals b b of said arms are arranged to diver e slightly from each other, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to permit the end of a strand of hair to be readily slipped between the ends of the arms past the projections 7), b.
In the use of the device, a strand of hair is placed between the arms thereof near the closed end of the bow Z). Thereafter the strand is wound spirally about both of the arms ll. ll, and the winding of the strand upon the arms has the effect to press the outer ends thereof together, against the resiliency of the material constituting the arms. When thus pressed together the curved portions or shoulders b, I) are forced together, as shown in Fig. 3. In the final operation the free end of the strand is passed between the diverging terminals 6 Z) and past the curved lockingrportions (2 thereof, so that the free end of the strand is held in position between the arms and the device is therebv locked to the curled strand. To remove the strand of hair, the free end of the strand is first drawn outwardly past the curved strand locking portions 7) of the arms, after which the strand is free to be unwound, leaving the hair properly curled.
I claim as my invention 1. A hair curler comprising arms connected at one end of the device and diverging toward the other end thereof, and de signed to receive a strand of hair which is spirally wound about and outside of both arms, each arm being provided at its outer end with a portion to engage a complemental portion on the outer end of the other arm to thereby retain the free end of the strand, the said complemental retaining port-ions being pressed together by the strand wound about said arms.
2. A hair curler comprising arms connected at one end of the device and diverging at the other end thereof, and designed to receive a strand of hair which is spirally wound about and outside of both arms, each arm being provided at its outer end with a portion to engage a complemental portion on the outer end of the other arm to thereby retain the free end of the strand, the said complemental retaining portions being pressed together by the strand wound about said arms, and said arms beyond the complemental engaging strand locking portion being provided with flaring terminals.
3. A hair curler comprising arms provided at their ends with interfitting, complemental curved portions to lock to the device the free end of a strand of hair wound spirally about said arms, and which an:
forced together by pressure of the strand said arms beyond the retaining means diupon the arms. verging to facilitate the insertion of the 4:. A hair eurlei' comprising sprihg arm's strand end between the arms. I rovided at theiiends with retaining means JOHN L; DEVANEY. .5 for the free end of a strando'f hair, Whih \Vithesses:
means are forced together by pressure of MIGHAEI'; J. CHERRY, the strand upon the arms, the terminals of V. STEVENS LEWIS.
