AUTOMATIC SASH LOCK AND OPENER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 25, 1914.

AUTOMATIC SASH LOCK AND OPENER.
Application filed July 25, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that a citizen of the United States, residing at Colony, in the county of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Sash Locks and Openers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sash locks, and particularly to sash operation.
An object of this invention is the provision of a device which will automatically lock the sash when it is moved to its closed position, the device also automatically open ing the sash to a predetermined height, when the locking mechanism is released.
With this and other objects in view as will become fully apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of my improved device, showing the same in use; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary eleva tional view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 38 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a window frame in which an upper sash 2 and a lower sash 3 are slidably mounted. Connected at its opposite ends to one side of the window frame is a keeper rod 4, the rod being bent intermediate of its ends to provide a downwardly facing shoulder 5, and loosely connected to the frame below the shoulder of the keeper is a lever 6. Arod 7 is disposed longitudinally of the lower sash, the lower end of the rod being disposed at an angle along the lower rail of the sash and being curved to provide a hook 8 which engages beneath the lower rail of the sash and is secured thereto. To prevent the laterally directed portion of the rod 7 from moving upwardly along the sash, a pin 8 projects outwardly from the side rail of the sash at its lower end, against which the laterally directed portion of the rod engages. The upper end of the rod 7 is bent backwardly upon itself to form a downwardly facing hook 9, the rod being again bent upwardly Specification of Letters Patent,

to provide an upwardly facing loop 10. A supporting hook 11 is connected to the side of the frame above the lower sash 3, one end of a contractile helical spring 12 being connected to the hook 11, and connecting the lower end of the spring 12 to the hook 9 of the rod 7 is a link 13, the link being slidably disposed through a loop 14 secured in the side of the frame.
In the practical use of my device, it will be seen that when the lower sash is in its raised or open position, the hook 10 formed on the upper end of the rod 7 is disposed above the shoulder 5 of the keeper by reason of the tension of the spring 12 connected to the upper end of the rod. When the sash is lowered to close the same, the pin 8 engages the laterally directed portion of the rod 7 to move the rod downwardly against the tension of the spring 12, the hook portion 10 of the rod riding over the outwardly curved portion of the keeper rod 4, and it will be seen that when the sash is lowered to its closed position, the hook 10 is disposed below the shoulder 5 and is forced inwardly under the same by reason of the tension of the spring 12, the same in its closed position. When it is desired to raise the sash, the lever 6 is moved outwardly against the hook portion 10 of the rod 7 to disengage the same from beneath the shoulder 5 of the keeper, whereupon the sash is raised owing to the contraction of the spring which is connected to the hook 9 on the upper end of the rod 7. The contraction of the spring 12 raises the sash a predetermined distance, dependent upon the strength of the spring, it being merely the purpose of the device to open the sash slightly to allow for ventilation of the room.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a window frame and a sash slidably mounted therein, of a keeper having a downwardly facing shoulder secured to one side of the frame, a vertically disposed rod connected to the lower end of the sash, the upper end of the rod being bent to form a hook for engagement under the shoulder of the keeper when the sash is moved to closed position, means for releasing the hooked upper end of the rod from beneath the shoulder of the keeper, and means for automatically drawing the thereby automatically locking 7 rod upwardly after the same has been rekeeper to open the sash av leased from the predetermined distance.
2. A device of the character described com risin the combination with a Window frame having a sash slidably mounted therement under the shoulder of the keeper when the sash is in its closed position, means for to one side of the frame, a
signature 1n releasing the hooked upper end of said rod from-beneath the shoulder of the keeper, and
a spring connectedto the frame above the.
e to the upper end of the rod for drawing said rod upwardly upon release of the hooked end of the rod from the shoulder to automatically raise the sash. e I
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my the presence of two Witnesses.
