T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES Soi-ronn- Fnno, a citizen oit the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Locks, of which the l'ollowing is a specification.
illy invention relates to improvements in locks, more especially to that class oit locks used upon doors olf houses, but is equally applicable to doors of jail or prison cells or the like and has for its object, to provide a lock of the class mentioned in which the bolt is held in positive locked position by the automatic action of devices so arranged that the bolt will be positively held in position to lock the door to any object to which the door proper may be attached.
n further object is to provide means for actuating the devices designed to hold the bolt in an outward position and to release the bolt.
These objects, together with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art l attain by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

The casing 1 is of the usual form and'is provided with the usual connecting plate 2 and cover, all of which parts are common and do not enter into the present invention except that a casing and its usual parts must necessarily be present. The cover or top plate 2 is of the usual construction, and is not illustrated but is fitted to the casing 1 `detailed description is necessary.

The spring 9 is for the purpose of normally holding the bolt 3, together with its difterent parts in an extended or outward position.
To the casing 1 is attached in the usual manner the tumbler casing 11 which tumbler casing is provided with the usual tumblers, which are common and form no specific part of the present invention, but are of the usual key tumbler construction such as j used in locks upon the market and hence no For the purpose of preventing any accidental rotation or movement of the tumbler 11, said casing is provided with the notches 12 into one of which notches is normally seated the bar 13, which bar is held against end movement by means oi' the screw 14, which screw is locatedv in a suitable screw threaded aperture formed in the head 15, so that by rotating the screw 1-1- in one direction will force the bar 13 into one ol the notches 12 and by rotating the screw in the opposite direction will withdraw the bar 13 from one of the notches 19., after which the tumbler casing can be removed. It will be understood that the screw 14 has no longitudinal movement during the time it is rotated, the same being properly j ournaled in the post 16. The just above described parts are also common and form no specific part of the present invention, except that they or their equivalents must necessarily be present.
To the casing 1 is pivotally attached the bell or l. shaped lever 17 the arm 18 of said lever beingso located that it can be actuated by the key actuated bar or arm 19, which is moved by the key and when it is desired to move the bolt 3 so as to release it from its keeper, or in other Words to unlock the door bolt 3 in its outward position independentv the arm 19 is turned and' brought into contact with the arm 18, the arm of the bell shaped lever 17 being pressed downward which in turn rocks the bell or L shapedv lever 17 upon its pivotal point, thereby moving the upward or vvertical arm 20 inward, which action moves the locking bolt 3 inward by reason of the short ange or rib 21 striking against the outer t face of the VflangeS.
For the purpose of normally holding the arm 18 in an upward position. and the arm 20 in an outward position, the leaf spring 22 is provided, which spring is connected to the casing 1 and its free end pressing against the under side of the arm 18, by which arrangement the arm 20 will follow the movement of the bolt 3 when it is forced outward or into position to lock the door. y
lt is quite well understood. that locks in which the bolts can be forced backward may be opened by bringing pressure upon the beveled face of the locking bolt normally located in the keeper, the usual method' being to insert a flat piece of metal between the lock proper and the door casing and gradually forcing the locking bolt out of its keeper, thereby unlocking the door without the use of a key. In order to prevent the picking of a lock it is necessary toprovide means for locking the locking bolt against yend movement or in other words locking the locking bolt in an outward position and in such a manner that the extended or beveled end lcan not be forced backward except by the use of a key or other instrument intended to actuate the locking bolt. Y
For the purpose of locking the locking of the key, I provide a sliding plate 23, which sliding plate is provided with the beveled head or end 24, which beveled end` strikes the door jamb when -the* door is closed, thereby movingthe locking plate 23 inward, which locking plate is connected to' the lock casing by means of the pin or screw v 25, which is located through the elongated slot 26 formed in the sliding plate 23.
To the casing 1 is pivotally attached the latch or locking barv 27, which vlatch bar'is held up by reason of the vpin 28 carried by the sliding plate 23 coming in contact with the shoulder 29;` but' when the pin 28. is moved from under the shoulder 29, the latch bar 27 is free to drop into the position shown.
in Fig. 2 and when in that position the outer or free end of the `catch bar 27 drops back of the shoulder 30, thereby, preventing any end movement of the locking bolt 3 except when actuated by the key designed to actuate the lock proper.

For the purpose of preventing the lock bolt 3y from being locked in an extended position during the time the door is beingv closed or at any other time when it is not intendedto lock the lock bolt, against inward .movement thet beveled faced head 4 is so arranged withf reference to the beveledlhead or end 24 located-upon .the sliding plate 23 that when the jamb ofv the door or other object comes in contact with the beveled face 5 of `the head 4, the bolt 3 will be moved inward in advance of. the inward movement of the beveled head 24 so that the latch plate cannot fall into position to lock the lock bolt 3 until after said lockk bolt has been extended into its keeper, but after said lock bolt has been extended into its keeper the latchv plate is free to fall and lock the bolt against end-4 of the beveled heads 4 and 24 are clearly shown in Fig. 7, andas shown the striking face of the beveled head 4 is extended be- The relative arrangement 'ice i yond or to one side of the head 24: a suflicient distance to move the lock bolt 3 before the latch plate 23 is actuated or in other words a portion of the beveled faced head 4 is located out of alinement with the beveled head 24.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a lo'ck of the class described, a casing, a lock bolt carried within said casing, said lock bolt provided with a beveled faced head and a liange spaced from said head, an L--shaped lever pivotally connected to the casing, one of the arms of said lever being adapted to be actuated by the lock mechanism and the other arm of said lever located between the beveled faced head and the spaced flange, said arm provided with an extended rib and a beveled upper end, a spring controlled latch bar pivotally at tached to the casing and said latch bar adapted for contact with the arm located between the head and Vflange of the lock bolt, said arm provided with a shoulder, a sliding plate provided with a beveled end, and a pin adapted for engagement with the shoulder on said latch arm.

In a. lock or" the class described, a casing, a lock bolt carried within said casing, said lock bolt provided with a beveled laced head, and a flange spaced from said head, an L-shaped lever pivotally connected to the casing, one of the arms Of said lever adapted to be actuated by the lock mechanism and the other arm of said lever located between the beveled faced head and the spaced flange,
said arm provided with a beveled upper end, a spring controlled latch arm pivotally attached to the casing and said latch arm adapted for contact with the arm located between the head and flange of the lock bolt, said latch arm provided with a shoulder, and a sliding plate provided with a beveled end, and a pin adapted for engagement with the shoulder on said latch arm.
