. UNITED STATES; PAT T OFFICE.
I HERMAN v. GOOKINGHAM, or'RENssEt'AER; AND GEORGEO. PRICE, or ALBANY,
NEW YORK.
' i oaR-noo t-sEALING' JEvIcE.
-Be it known that we, HERMAN V. C .QOK- INGIIAM and GEORGE 0. PRICE, both cltlzens of the United States, and residents, respec,-
tively, of Rensselaer, in the county of Rens- ;selaer, and State of New York, and of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Car-Door-Sealing Device, of which the following is a full, clear, .and exact de- -scription. y H
The invention relates to sliding door locks, such as shown and described in the,
Letters Patent ,ofhthe United States, No.
1,042,326, granted-to us onOctober 22, 191 2. .The object of the present invention isto;
providea new and improved sealing device for the locks of sliding doors of freight cars of the box or furniture type, andarranged to permit. of readily locking theoperating lever ofthe-loek in place atthe time the door is unlocked For locked, andttoallow of;
sealing the door look when the latter is in locked'position to prevent tamperlng of the door by unauthorized persons.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a lock-controlling lever "ful crumedon the car doorand havingan opening for engagement withone of-a series of studs held on a keeper fixed to thecar-door, and a movable locking member on thesaid lever for locking the latter in position 'on the keeper when the lock is in open,enclosed.v
' 1 wear on the shoes F so asto allow giving which similar characters of-referen'ce'indicate corresponding parts 1n all the vlews.
Figure 1 is a sideelevation of a portion of. acar body having a sliding door pro 'videdwith the lock and sealing device; Fig.
2 is an enlarged side elevation of part of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 44 of Fig. 3 and showing the locking member in locking position; and Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 5.5 of Fig. 4.
The door A for closing and opening in the side of the car body B is provided-at its lower end with hangers G in which are journaled wheels D mounted to travel on a track E attached to the car body B, and the said Specification of Letters Patent,
Application filed April 15, 1914. Serial No. 881,963. 2
- sary.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914'.
wheels D and the track E are adapted to be engagedby shoes F. connected by links G with an operating lever H fulcrumed at H on the car door 'A, as more fully explained in the previous patent above referred to, so
that further description of this locking device for the car door A is not deemed neces The operating lever H is provided-near 1ts upperend with a handle H adaptedto be taken holdyof by the operator for imparting a swinging motion to the said lever.
H with'a view to engage or disengage the shoes F. from between the wheels D and the track whenever it is desired to lock or unlocktheedoor A. The upper portion of the operating lever Huisprovided with an opening H adapted to=engage any one of,
a series of studs I, I", I and I, cast on or secured to a segmental keeper J bolted ori otherwisefastened tolthe car doorA. The
stud. I is disposed verticallyabove the fulcrum H' of the lever H so that when the lever H engages the stud I the shoes F are held in retracted position. Theother studs I, I and I are arranged to one side of the stud I, and when any one of them is engaged by the lever H the latter is in locking position,.as will be readily understood by reference to dotted lines in Fig. 1. Only one of the studs I, I? or I is engagedat a time'by the lever. H and a number of such studs are provided to compensate for any be engaged by a movable locking member K in-the form of a plate having a slot K for engagement with the reduced shank I, the slot having an enlarged portion K nearits lower end for the passage of the head of the stud to move the reduced shank I into register with the slot K. The locking member K is mounted to slide up and down on pins or screws L passing through the slot K and engaging the lever H, as plainly shown in Figs. 3 and 4:. The lower end of the locking member K is provided with a forwardly and upwardly extending handle K arranged in the rear ofthe handle H and adapted to be taken hold of by the operator for moving the locking member upward or downward as the case may be. hen the plate K is movedinto uppermost position, as shown in Fig. 3, thenthe enlarged portion K of the slot Kf registers 1 with the opening I-I so that the lever H and; the locking member K can be engaged with any one of the studs 1, I, I or 1 and when the said parts are so engaged the lockin memberK can be swung downward so that the slot K engagesth'e reduced shank I and thus locks'the lever H in'place to prevent the disengagement'of the lever H ward movement ofthe locking member K, as" indicated in Fig. 3', and the downward movement of the member K'is limited by the' bottom of v the handle K resting on the bot- 202mm of'the'handlefi as indicated in Fig;
from the corresponding'stud I,"I',ZI or I. The lowermost screw or pin L limits-the up'-' 4. The bottoms of the handles K H are provided with apertures K H adapted to register witheach other at the time the lock ing-member K. is in lowermostpositiom'and device N top'revent tamperingfwith the car:
the saidregistering apertures K and Ha're adapted to receive a padlock, lead' 'seal or like device N, as indicated'in Fig. f4) From the foregoing it'wi ll be seen that the arrangement described the lever H is locked in place when in engagement with either member K is lockedin place by the sealing door lockjby unauthorizedipersons.
It is understood that in order to lift the member K into unlocking position, itis necessary to open or destroy the sealing device N, consequentlythe proper ofiiciaIs of the. road can quickly. detect whether a car doorv lock has been tamperediwith or not.v
It is'understood that the'operating lever H is loosely'mounted iat H to allow, sufli-f cient transverse'movementof the lever H toj move the latter into or out of engagement withthe stud I, I, I or 1 k Having thus described our invention, we
claim asnew and desire. to secureby Letters Patent:
1. In a car Oqiiei or ou as miy be obtained tor an can of the studs 1, 1",:1 or I and" the locking door lock, the combination o f I are i a gepemang lever ammo on the car door,a,keeper attached to the door, the
""saidulever' having an opening and the keeper having a series of studs to hold the lever in an adjusted position, a movable locking member adapted to cooperate with said studs for locking the lever in position on the keeper,and"a seal engaging the said locking member to hold the latter in locking position.
withthe lock-operating lever fulcrumed on the door and having an opening, a keeper attached to thedoor and provided with a series of studs ada'pted'to' be engaged by the said lever opening," and a-slotted locking plate slidable on the said, lever and adapted" to engagethe stud in engagement at the timewith the lever 'to hold the latter in lockedpositio'n. 1 h
3. In a car door lock, the combination with a lock-operating lever having an opening' and a handle, -a-fixed keeper providedwith a-series of studs having heads and re-' duced shanks, therstudsbein'g adapted to be engaged one an time byFthesaidleVer openingfa locking plate. slidably mounted on'the said'lever' under "the said handle, the said loeking plate} having a'*"slot for" engagementflwiththe reduced shank ofa stud, the side walls of the slot havingnear their lower endsjenlarged portionsforthe passage of the head of a stud, the] said" locking position, I the said "hand-hold being adapted to engage one end 'of-thehandle,'
each other 'for the reception "of aseal.
