WATER-TUBE MARINE STEAM-BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 19141.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIO .VALLINO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at No. 6 Via Napoli, Genoa, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Tube Marine Steam- Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its ob ect to provide an improved water tube marlne steam boiler of the type comprlsing three transverse upper steam and water drums connected to one another and also to three transverse lower water drums by means of groups of tubes located over the combustion chambers of the boiler furnace.
In the improved steam boiler the heat which would otherwise escape to waste through the chimney, is utilized for heating the feed water.
This invention is illustrated by way of errample in the accompanylng drawings, 111 which:-
Figure 1 is a cross sectlon partly in end elevation of a form of the improved steam boiler, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly in section thereof.
As shown, 1 is a transverse central upper steam and water drum, and 2, 2, are two transverse upper side steam and water drums connected to the central upper drum 1 by water tubes 6, and steam pipes 10.
3 is a transverse central lower water drum, and 4, 4 are two transverse lower side water drums connected to the central lower drum 3 by pipes 9.
The central upper drum 1 is connected by water tubes 5, to the two lower side drums 4, 4 and by water tubes 8 to the central lower drum 3. The two upper side drums 2, 2 are connected by water tubes 7 to thetwo lower side drums 1, 1.
The boiler is incased in a casing of steel plates lined with asbestos, provided at top with two symmetrically located outlets 15 for the smoke gases.
When the feed water is injected under or inside the plates 17, the tubes 6 will operate as economizer tubes for heating the feed water. When the feed water is injected outside the plates 17 the tubes 6 will operate as ordinary steam-generating tubes.
The circulation of the water in the improved boiler is as follows :The circulation commences with the rising of the water from the lower side drums 4, to the central upper drum 1 through the Water tubes 5 owing to these latter receiving the direct heat of the fuel on the furnace grates 16. The steam generated in the tubes 5 collects in the steam space 18 of the central upper drum 1. The Water continues to rise from the central upper drum 1 underneath the plates 17 and thence through the tubes 6 into the upper side drums 2. The cycle of the circulation is completed by the water flowing from the upper side drums 2 down through the side water tubes 7 (which are exposed less to the action of the hot furnace gases) into the lower side drums 4. With the described cycle of the water circulation and assumingjthat the feed water is first injected into the boiler outside the plates 17 in the central upper drum 1, the tubes 6 will operate as steanrgenerating tubes and the boiler will operate as an ordinary boiler without an economizer, because the water flowing through the tubes 6 will have a temperature equal to that of the Water in the other parts of the boiler; the steam generated in the tubes 6 collecting in the steam spaces 19 of the upper side drums 2 which communicate through pipes 10 with the steam space 18 of the central upper drum. If however the feed water is injected b means of pipes 20 underneath the plates 1% in the central upper drum 1, the tubes 6 will act as economizer tubes because the feed water mixes with the hot water in the central upper drum 1, and the mixture will be carried through the tubes 6 by the current produced by the general circulation of the boiler. This mixture in the tubes 6 will have a lower temperature than that of the water in the body of the boiler and will therefore reduce he temperature of the tubes 6. Consequently the surfaces of these tubes 6 will be rendered more ef'licient as heat-exchangers in contact with the hot gases passing toward the chimneys 15 owing to the increased difference between the temperature of the tubes 6 and the temperature of the hot gases. This increase of efliciency (which does not occur in the arrangement where the feed water is injected outside the plates 17) serves to produce the high efliciency of the improved boiler as a whole which is the object of this invention.
What I claim is 1. In a marine water tube steam boiler of the type hereinbefore specified, the combination of a central upper steam and water drum, two upper side steam and Water drums, two sets of connecting water tubes connecting two sides of the water space of said central. upper drum respectively to the water space of the two upper side steam and water drums, two chambers in said central upper drum inclosing respectively the orifices of said two sets of connecting water tubes, a feed water pipe delivering feed water into said two chambers and means for delivering the said feed water outside the said chambers, whereby said two sets of connecting water tubes are caused to operate when desired as economizer tubes for heating the feed water before the latter enters the two upper side steam and water drums.
2. In a marine water tube steam boiler of the type hereinbefore specified, the combination of a central upper steam and water drum, two upper side steam and water drums, steam pipes connecting the steam spaces of said central upper drum and said upper side steam and water drums, a central lower water drum, two lower side water drums, tubes connecting the water spaces of said central upper drum, and said central lower drum, tubes connecting the water spaces of said central upper drum and said lower side drums, tubes connecting the water spaces of said upper side drums respectively to said lower side drums, water pipes connecting said lower side drums to said central lower drum, two sets of connecting water tubes connecting two sides of the water space of said central'upper drum respectively to the water space of the two upper side steam and water drums, two chambers in said central upper drum inclosing respectively the orifices of said two sets of connecting water tubes, a feed water pipe delivering feed water into said two chambers and means for delivering thesaid feed water outside the said chambers, whereby said two sets of connecting water tubes are caused to operate when desired as economizer tubes for heating the feed water before the latter enters the two upper side steam and water drums.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
