Be it known that I, BENQ .Il GUNDLACH, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Belleville, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cutting- Machines, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact descriptiom suchas will enable others skilled in the ,art tolwhich it appertains to make and use thesame.
T his invention relates to cutting machines, and has forits main objectwtoprovide a manually operated machine thatwill` sucycessfully cut asbestos shingles, which is small and compact enough to enable it to be carried around by a workman who 1s ,shingling a roof, and which can be manufactured and sold at a low enough price to enable a carpenter or similar workman to purchase one for his individual use.
.Another object is to provide a machine of the character' described that will cut an asbestos shingle clean and even and also puncture holes in shingles, and still another is to provide an efficient hand-operated cutting machine that comprises only a few parts of simple design that are not apt to break or get out of adjustment when the machine is used to cut a hard and tough brous sub` vtical transverse sectional view taken on the .line 4-1 of Fig. 2: and Fig. L5 isa vertlcal transverse sectional view taken on' the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. y
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form `of my invention, A and B designate two'cutters or knife blades that are disposed diametrically opposite each other. and which are provided with substantially' V-s'haped cutting edges that form cuts in both faces` or sides of the sheet being operated on whenthe cutters are closed or brought together. The cutter A, which I will term the stationary cutter,
is mounted in the .upper edge of a stationary cutter holder 1, that consists of a long,
rigid bar, and the cutter B,`which I will termthe 'movable cutter, is mounted in the lower edge of a movable cutterholder 2 that is arranged directly above the stationary cutter holder 1. YA` stop l5 is arranged at one end of the work table so as to prevent the sheet from slipping longitudinally off the ywork tablev after the sheet has been cut. this being a very desirable feature in a machine that is used for cutting shingles, owing-to the fact that the machine is generally used onthe roof of a building and is arranged at such an angle that the portion of the shingle lying on the work table` would slide longitudinally olf of `saine after the shingle has been severed if the work, table were not provided with a stop or similar device 15. The vertically disposed guides 3 are preferably so designed that the upper .ends of same form stops or abutments 16 thatk coperate with the links l2 so as to limit the movement of the movable cutter holder 2V in both directions, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2. At oneend of the machine is an inclined support 17 for holding a shingle yin which itis desired to punch a hole, said support being arranged in such a positionk that a punch 18 on the Y lever 9 will pass through the shingle on the support and enter a hole 18a in said support when the cutters are closedas shown in Fig. 2.

There is no danger of the cutters springing or spreading apart during the cutting operation, as would be apt to result with a ,portabler machine oit the type now generally used for cutting light-weight sheet metal in which the knives or cutters travel past each other and shear the material, and, as the machine comprises only a few substantial parts of simple design, there is little danger of the machine breaking or getting out of adjustment when it is in use.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is: l. cutting machine comprising a stationary cutter holder and a movable cutter holderthatconsist of long rigid bars arranged in vertical alinement with each other and provided in their meeting edges with cutters whose edges are disposed diametrically opposite each other, vertically disposed guides that embrace vthe movable cutter holder, levers pivotally connected to said guides and provided with cams that bear against the upper edge of the movable cutter A holder when said levers are moved in one' tudinally when it is depressed, the upper" ends of said guides forming abutments or stops that coperate with said links to limit the movement of the movable cutter holder in both directions, and means Jfor holding said cutter holders in an upright position.

A cutting machine comprising a stationary cutter holder provided with a laterally projecting work table whose outer end is bent upwardly to form an abutment that guides the work, a cutter in said holder whose edge supports the sheet that is being operated on, a movable cutter holder provided with a cutter that is arrangeddirectly above the stationary cutter, a manually operated actuating device that comprises cams which exert downward pressure on the posite end portions ofk the movable cutter holder, resilientmeans for elevating the movable cutter holder and normally holding the cutters separated, `and vertically disposed guides that embrace the movable cutter holder.
3.4 A cutting machine comprising a stationary cutter holder and a movable cutter holder, each of which consists of a long rigid such a position that said punch will engage same.

A cutting machine comprising a stationary and a movable cutter holder, each of which consists of a long rigid bar, sharpedged cutters set in the meeting edges of said holders, vertically disposed guides connected to the end portions of the stationary holder and embracing the movable holder, legs on the lower ends of said guides that hold said cutter holders in an upright position, levers pivotally connected to the upper ends of said guides and provided with cams that bear against the upper edge ofthe movable cutter holder, one of said levers having an operating handle, links pivotally connected to said levers for causing them to more in unison, and a rigid work table carried by the stationary cutter holder and projecting laterally from one side of same, the supporting surface of said work table lying in a plane slightly lower than the plane of the cutting edge of the stationary cutter.
