Be it known that I, HENRY ALINnER, a subject ofthe King of Sweden, residing at lS/Iilvvaukee, in the county of` Milwaukee and `State of` Wisconsin, have inventeda certain new` and useful Improvementt in Twyerv Valves, of which thefollowing is a specification.
. This invention relates to improvements in the construction ol' twyer valves of thetype especially applicable tothe twyers of converters or furnaces.` f
An object of the invention is to provide a twyervalve for converters which is simple in construction and eilicient in operation.
rAnother Objectis to provide a structure in which `the `valve easing and housing are formed of `single casting of `metal,'thus forininga structure of maximum strength,
eliminating necessity of extensively machini ing the valve'casing, and reducing thecost of` production of the casing to a minimum.
Still another object is `to provide a structure in which thevalve which is preferably of the ball type, isreadily removable for inspection, from `the casing. i.

; one of lthe structures of the prior art* which utilizes ball valves in convertertvvyers, as disclosediin Patent 593,992,` granted Nov. 23, 1897,the twyer boX cap is provided with a separate valve housing` easing which is' secured to the cap on the converter side thereof, by means Aoit boltszor studs. -In another of the structuresof theprior art the valve cap is `formed with an enlarged boreextend` Ving therethrough in line with the poke hole opening, this bore being bushed after insertion ofthe `ball valve to prevent escape of theball through `the enlarged bore, see Pat- .ent 1,035,772,granted Aug.` 13, 1913. The ballmay be removed in thistypeofvalve by removal ofthe bushing.` It has also been proposed as disclosed in Patent 1,034,995,
granted Aug: 6, 1912, to formthe valve cap i and housing in one piece and to cast the ball within its housing. a The structures of the prior art in which y the ball valve is made removable by the pro-- vision oiwa separate ballrctaining element such as a cap or bushing secured to the valve cap, are; objectionable, first, `because of the number oi partscomluising the Ivalve cap; second, because ot the `liability of loosening of` the Separate `retaining elements; third, because oli' the diiliclillty in removing the ball valve for inspection; andlfourth, because of` the enhancement` in the cost of production oi the valves due to the machining neces sary to properly connect `theseparate `ele,- ment to the cap. The structure in which the valve cap and` housing are formed `in one piece and in which` the ball is cast directly within the housing, is objectionable because ofthe destruction of the temper ol the ball valve during the casting opera` tion, and also` because when once inserted within its `casingthe ball cannot be removed `for inspection without destruction of the valve casing.`
With the use ofthe presentwiuvention of the above noted objectionableA features are eliminated `and a fsimple and ellicient valve casingmay be produced at minimum cost. `1

The independent tivyer valve casings 8 are each formed with a suitable recess at its lower extremity Within which a bolt 13 coacts. The bolts 13 and their coacting nuts vconnect the twyer casings '8 With a spacing and supporting bar 14 Which extends .longitudinally of the converter shell 11. The bar 14 serves to properly space the independent tyvyers and to stiften and form a proper support for the tivyer casings 8.
The valve cap 2 is provided With a poke hole opening 3 which forms part of a through opening in the valve casing extending in the direction of, and in alinement with, the tivyer pipe 9.' The valve-housing Wall 4 is formed in one With the valve cap 2 on `the converter side thereof. rlhis Wall 4 is cut away at the portion 15 thereof which is in alinement with the vpoke hole `opening 8, thus providing a continuous through opening or passage through the entire valve casing. An opening 10 is Vprovided in the upper 'portion of the vvall 4 and extends in a direction transverse to the direction of the poke hole opening 3. The ball valve 1, which is normally housed Within the Wall 4, and which controls the poke yhole opening 3, is of such a diameter that it will not pass through the opening 15 in the ivall 4 Which is in alinement with the poke hole opening 3, but will pass freely throughr the opening 10 in the Wall 4. The inner formation. of theV Wall 4 is such thatvthe ball valve 1 which is normally held against its seat by the air pressure Within the casing 8, may be readily displaced from its seat over the pokel hole opening 3 by the insertion of a rod through the poke hole opening, when the ball valve 1 Will assume the position indicated in 'dot The ball valve 1 is, however, prevented from leaving its housing Within the Wall 4 by the structural element adjacent the openingwlO, this element in the present case being a portion of the tvvyer casing 8. The valve casing is held .in position against the casing L8 by means of studs 5 and suitable retaining nuts coacting therewith, and forms a. :closure for the large opening in the end of the casing 8.
Upon removal of the nuts on the studs 5, the valve casing` ymay be readily removed from the tvvyer casing 8, thus permitting ready removal of the ballr valve `1 Without necessitating removal yoit' any special ball retaining elements connected to the valveA cap 2. The formation of the vvall 4 in one with the valve cap 2, eliminates necessityoi` macli'ing the casting other than slightly reaming or grinding the valve seat. The adjacent portion of the casing,y8, which may, however, be any other structure Which is independent of the valve casing, forms an ellicient lock for preventing displacement of the ball valve 1 from Within its housing.
While thevvalve casing in the present instance is disclosed as forming a cap for the entire side of the casing 8, it should of course be understood that the valve casing might be made only of suitlicient size to properly house and form a seat for the ball valvel 1., It should also be noted "that the ball valve 1 need not necessarily control an opening 3 inthe valve casing and that this opening may be formed in other elements Which do not form a part of the valve casing itself. v
