APPLICATION FILED JULY 30, 1913.

RNezZe RASMUS P. NEDERGAARI'D, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
DOOR-HINGE MARKER.
missed Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Application filed July 30, 1913. Serial No. 782,102.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RAsMUs 1 Neona- GAARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hinge Markers; and I do hereby declare the't'ollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in door hinge markers, and resides in the provision of adjustable cutting or marking blades and means for insuring the properspaced relationship of the hinge With relation to the edges of the door.
An important object of my invention is to construct a device 01' the above mentioned character arranged and constructed to provide for the adjustment of certain of the marking or cutting blades, and employing means enabling the edge of the hinge to be properly spaced with relation to the door edge, which may be moved out of operative position when it is desired.
A further important object of my invention is to provide a device of the above men tioned character constructed of few parts and arranged so that certain of the parts which may have become worn may be readily replaced, which is cheap to manufacture, and reliable in its operation.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
\Vith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my device in its assembled position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the means for adjustably securing the cutting or marking blades, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, illustrating the manner of mounting the uide plate forming a part of my nvention.
Referring now to the drawings, the nu moral 1 designates as an entirety the body portion of my device, which is rectangular in shape and may be constructed of any suitable material.
As a means for supporting the body portion this invention employs a rectangular block .2 having a handle 3 secured centrally thereto on one side thereof, and secured to the body portion 1 by means of abolt 4 extending centrally through the body portion 1 and the block 2.
The body portion 1 of my device is provied upon its outer surface with a plurality of transverse slots 5 which are formed in pairs adjacent each end of the body portion and are adpated to receive cutting or marking blades 6 and 7. The transverse slots 5 of each pair are disposed in spaced relationship, and when it is desired to mark the designated space for a smaller hinge, the blades 6 and 7 are inserted within the slots 5 nearest to the center of the body portion.
As a means for removably securing the blades 6 and 7 within the slots 5 this invention employs countersunk pins 8 which extend transversely through the slots of each pair and the blades centrally thereof from the ends of the body portion, and are enlarged and threaded, to engage the thread ed portion of the opening through which they extend.
A longitudinal cutting or marking blade 10 is mounted within a longitudinally extending slot 10 formed in the upper surface of'the body portion 1 in spaced relationship with the adjacent edge thereof, for a distance equivalent to the desired spaced relationship of the longitudinal edge of the hinge to the door edge. The longitudinal cutting or marking blade 10 coacts with the blades 6 and 7 in the operation of marking the door.
As a means for enabling the longitudinal mark with which the longitudinal edge of the hinge is to register to be spaced with relation to the longitudinal edge of the door, this invention employs a guide plate 11 which is slidably mounted upon the side edge of the body portion 1 adjacent the longitudinal blade 10. The guide ita 11 is of the same length as the body portion 1 and block 2, and is provided with an nouardly extending lateral flange 12 which is adapted to engagethe adjacent wall of. the block 2 during the sliding operation of the guide plate 11. Mounted upon the :tlange 12 is a pair of spaced pins 13 which engage the inner surface of the plate 11 and extend outwardly from the flange and terminate in spaced relationship with the outer longitudinal edge oi the plate ll.
As a means for securing the plate ll to body portion 1, this invention provides downwardly extend tiange let formed on the under surface or 1% body portion 1 and engaging the adjacent wail of the block 2. A pair of spaced openings 15 is formed through the flange 1 the body portion 1, said openings oei ted receive the pins 13 secured. to ange 12 of the plate ll, whereby the lit is slidably secured to the body The sliding movement of the plate otion. to the body portion. l. is gagernent or the flan e extending 1eand With flange 12 operates ther clearly seen Figs, l a .u o,
in operation, the gt a p ate ll is moved to its extended position. that its outer edge will ce beyond the o er edges of the blades 6, 'Z' and 10, an d into engagement with the side of a door whereby the de sired spacing of the cut to be made by the longitudinal blade is provided. lhe handle portion 3 is then struck a blow with a mallet or any other suitable tool, causing he cutting or marking blades to out into the Wood and thereby make the desired marlr. As hereinbe'l ore stated, transversely extending blades '6 and 7 may be adjusted after the manner described when it is desired to designate or marlr a space for a small hinge.
lt is apparent that my device be used for other marking purposes, and in such event the guide plate ll'may be moved to a position to enable the device to be placed'in any desired position upon the object to'be marked. The action of the plate 11 will be automatic, inasmuch .as it is loosely mounted after the mannerdescribed upon the body portion l. l hen the device is placed upon a fiat surface the blade 11 is forced to its inwardly extending position and out of the Way.
In reduction to practice, it have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet, realizing that the conditions concurrent With the adoption of my device Will neceslaterally block i asniuch as the ween, as will be certain of niiasvo sarily vary, ll desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully tion, What I claim is:
