WILLIAM E. HEWITT, OF TURNEE, KANSAS. i
SCYTHE-FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov. io, 1914:.
Application filed .Tune 25, 1914. Serial No. 8473237.
To all whom it may con cem Be it known that I, `NILLIAM E. HEWITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Turner, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scythe-Fastening Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in fastening devices for blades of agricultural implements and more particularly to a scythe blade fastening device and the primary object of the invention is to provide a means for effectively securng a scythe blade to a snath without danger of loosening or breaking of the blade when mowing.
A further object of the invention resides in providing an improved Construction for securing the blade to the snath which means will be equally as light in Construction as any means heretofore known and 'which will at the same time be more durable and afford a protection for the end of the handle or snath.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a Construction in which the fastening means is provided with a smooth fiat surface facing downwardly so that the various Operating parts of the device will not engage the grass encountered in the mowng operation.
A still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in Construction, ineXpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of Construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to use: Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof with the covering or securing plate removed: Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section therethrough as seen on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 with the covering plate applied: and, Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively transverse sections as seen on lines H and 5-5 of Fig. 2 with the top I plate applied' In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which "l indicates a handle or what is known to the art as a snath, the lower end portion of which is provided with a flat surface indicated in the drawing at 2. Applied to the fiat face 2 of the snath is a plate 3 which isprovided with bands 4: the latter partially encircling the snath l when the plate is so applied. Also formed on or otherwise secured to one end of the plate and one end band at is an end wall section 5 which is `adapted to abut the end of the snath or handle 1 when the plate is applied so as to limit the movement of the plate on the snath and also aiford a protection for the end of the latter as will appear later. The outer face of the plate 3 is provided with a longitudinal groove 6 which tapers smaller toward its inner end the outer end of said groove terminating at the outer end of the plate and having a laterally curved portion at such end. This groove is adapted to receive loosely therein the shank 'of a scythe blade 7 and the inner end of said groove 6 terminates in a recess or cavity 8 which receives therein a laterally eXtending lug 9 carried on the outer end of the shank of the blade. The groove is of such'depth that when the blade is properly positioned therein the face thereof fits fiush with the outer face of the plate 3 so that a covering or protecting plate 10 may be readily appled thereto, a wedge T being disposed' between one wall of the groove 6 and the shank of the blade 7 whereby said shank may be snugly held in said groove and Whereby the angular relation of the blade to the snath may be varied by placing said wedge on one side or the other of said shank. The wedge is preferably provided with a depending extension 7 fitting in the cavity 8. The covering plate is of the same size as the plate 3 and 'is adapted to be secured in position through the medium oi* screws 11 eXtending through openings in the plate and engaging nuts ll' embedded in the lower side of the plate 3.
In order to secure the plate 3 to the snath, an additional screw 12 is provided which extends through one of the bands 4 and engaged with a threaded socket in the snath adjacent the outer end of the latter. Also extending through both plates 3 and 10 and through the snath 1 as Well as the opposite end band on the plate 3 is a bolt 13 the head of Which is countersunk in the outer face ot' the plate 10. The threaded end of said bolt is engaged by a nut let and 'this additionally secures the plate 10 to the plate 3 as Well as additionally securing the plate 3 on the snath. It might here also be stated that the heads of the set screws ll are also countersunk in the outer face of the plate 10 so that a perfectly smooth surface is pro vided thereby. In View of this smooth surface which is alforded by the structure hereabove described and shown in the drawing it Will be appreciated that in the use of this device there is no danger of grass, straw and other matter engaging the parts of the devce to adhere thereto. It Will further be seen that should it become necessary to remove the blade from the snath, same may be readily accomplished by merely removing the outer covering or protecting plate 10. The Construction is such that the device is of minimum Weight but maximum durability and strength and alfords a positive connection at all times between the blade and the snath.
From the foregoing it Will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of Construction may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention What I claim is:
l. The combination With a snath and a blade having a shank thereon; of a plate applied to the snath and'having a slot for the reception of said shank thei-ein, means for securing said plate to the snath, an additional plate applied over the outer face of the first mentioned plate and retaning the shank in position in the latter, means for securing said plates together, and additional means for securing the same to the snath.
2. The combination With a snath and a blade having a shank thereon; of a plate applied to the snath and receivng the shank of the blade in contact With the outer face thereof, means in connection With the shank of the blade and said plate for afording an inter-looking engagement therebetween, a covering plate applied to the outer face of the first mentioned plate retaining the shank of the blade in position on the latter, means for securing said plates together and addtional means for securing the same to the snath.
3. The combination With a snath and a blade having a shank thereon; of a plate applied to the snath having sockets in the outer face thereof, said plate being adapted to receive the shank of the blade in contact With the outer face of the same, means for aifording inter-looking engagement between the shank of the blade and said plate, a covering plate applied to the out-er face of the first mentioned plate for retaining the shank of the blade in engagement With the latter, nuts mounted in the sockets of the first mentioned plate, set screws extending through the covering plate and engaged With the nuts in the first mentioned plate and retaining said plates in engagement With one another, and means for securing said plates on the snath.
4-. In a device of the class described,-the combination With a snath and a blade having a shank thereon; of a plate applied to the snath and having encircling bands thereon engaging said snath, said plate being also provided With an end projection formed in connection With one of said bands and adapted to abut the end of said snath to form a protection for the latter, means for securing the shank of the blade on said plate and additional means for securing the plate on the snath.
In testimony Whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
