IHE NORRIS PETERS ca. PHOTO-LITHIL WASHINcmN. D c
ZEGHARIAI'I HOWELL, OF OCEANPARK, CALIFORNIA.
GARBAGE-WAGON.
17 '0 all wiiom it may concern Be it known that I, ZECHARIAH M.
HOWELL, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Oceanpark, in the county of I os Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention pertains to garbage handling mechanism, and it has special reference to means whereby the garbage may be disposed of in an e'llicient and sanitary manner.
The object of the invention is to furnish a vehicle which carries thereon a compressing and separating mechanism, whereby the solid constituents of the garbage will be solidified, and the liquid portion separated, so that it may be discharged into the sewer at intervals, and the comparatively dried and solidified matter so condensed that the conveyance will be able to collect a much greater amount than otherwise, and the mechanism for doing the work is driven by the wheels of the conveying vehicle, as it moves from place to place, as will now be set forth in detail.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my sanitary garbage wagon. Fig. 2 is a top view of the wagon. Fig. 3 is a central, vertical longitudinal section of the wagon. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side view of the roller compressing mechanism. Fig. 5 is a section of the rollers. Fig. 6 is a view of the opposite ends of the rollers, and Fig. 7 is a side view, enlarged, of the mechanism for controlling the dis charge door.
In carrying out my invention, I may use a power truck for carrying the mechanism and receptacles, but in this case I show a vehicle which is to be drawn byhorses, and it comprises an elongated body, 8, mounted on fore and aft wheels, 9, 10, respectively. This body is divided into three compartments, the forward compartment, 11, having its fore and aft ends sloping, as at 12, 13, these sloping walls projecting down below the main portion of the body, the terminals of the walls being separated, so as to form a discharge opening, 14. This opening is provided with a downwardly Specification of Letters Patent. A pplication filed February 17, 1913. Serial No. 748,963.

swinging door, 15, hinged at its forward edge, as at 16, to the margin of the wall,
12. each end of the door a link, 17, hinged thereto, the upper end of each link being provided with a rack, 18. Alongside of the rack is across shaft, 19, journaled to the body, 8,0ne or both ends having a crank, 20. A pinion, 21, on each end of the shaft, 19, meshes with the rack, so that by turning the crank, 20, the door, 15, will be closed oropened. i
The rear compartment, 22, has at its rear end a discharge faucet, 22', the bottom,23, of thecompartment being sloping so that any liquid within the compartment may be readily discharged. The upper end of this compartment has an inclined floor, 24:, which extends down toward the upper edge of the wall,'13, the space, 25, within the body above the inclined floor, and which is i the third compartment, being designed for use as a hopper to receive the garbage. The floor 24=is removably supported upon the strips 24: and is prevented from sliding downwardly by means of suitable hooks 4-, which engage the rear wall of the wagon. If desired, the floor 24 may be perforated, as shown in the drawings, to facilitate the passage of the liquid into the compartment 22.
At the'juncture of the floor, 24;, and wall, 13, I mount a pair of transverse rollers, one above the other, the lower roller, 26, having its shaft projecting at each end beyond the body, and on one or both ends it is provided with a sprocket wheel, 27, which carries a sprocket chain, 28, that extends down and over a sprocket wheel, 29, attached to the rear drive wheel, 10. The upper roller, 30, has its axis journaled in sliding boxes, 31, which boxes slide within slotted yokes, 32, secured to the body, 8. Within the upper ends of each yoke is a sliding block, 33. Between the block, 33, and box, 31, is a coiled spring, 34, and a threaded stem, 35, passes through the head of the yoke, 32, with its end in contact against the sliding block, so that a tension may be exerted downwardly on the roller, 30. For this purpose the threaded stem has a hand wheel, 36. The projecting end of each roller shaft carries at one end a star wheel, 37, which intermesh, so that the lower roller will turn the upper roller at all times, however much the two rollers may be separated by the gar- The forward edge of this door has at bage which is passing through. The rollers, 26, 30, may be made of any suitable material, either rigid or elastic in their character without departing from the spirit of my invention.
It is obvious that the liquid expressed from the garbage, as it passes through the roller, will be discharged into th'esecond compartment, 22, and the partially dried and solidified garbage will be deposited in the first compartment, 11, to be-finall-y discharged through the opening, 14, when the compartment is filled. The operation of compressing the garbage and extracting the water therefrom takes place when the vehicle travels from one garbage receiving point to the next, and when the vehicle passes the available sewage receptacles or openings at the street intersections, the liquid within the compartment, 22, is discharged, thereby obviating the necessity of transporting the moisture of the sewage to the dumping place. As the liquidis expressed from the sewage matter, the solid portion or residue can be more readily taken care of and is incondition whereby it can bepreserved for a greater length of time, and inthat condition its bulk is much less than if it carried the water usually contained therein. I
It is obvious that instead of mounting the expressing mechanism on a vehicle, I may mount it on a base, and connect the disfor opening and'closing said door, an in clined wall detachably secured to the upper rear 'end of said body and extending downwardly and inwardly and being disposed at itslower end adjacent but spaced from the upper end of one of said inclined bottom walls, a roller rotatably rnOuntedbe-v tween the; last-mentioned inclined bottom walls and within the space between said last named walls, anadjustable roller rotatably mounted above the roller and the-inclined wall and in spaced relation to: the first mentioned roller, means for adjusting said adjustable roller, and means for rotate ing-said roller. i
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses. i ZECHARIAI-I M. HOWELL. WVitnesses:
