TILE-MOLDING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE V. Rosen- THAL, citizen of the United States, resident of Williamstown, the county of lVood and State of WVest Virginia, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Tile- Molding Apparatus; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a central vertical transverse section of the mold. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the mold, with the closure ring and plunger removed. Fig. 1 is a detail bottom plan view of the closure ring. Fig. 5 is a detail end View of the same.
The object of the invention is to provide improved molding apparatus for making tiles and like articlesespecially glass tiles, and the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings herewith annexed, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 indicates the main body or stationary part of the mold, consisting of a wall portion 3 around an opening l, having the contour of the edge of the tile and adapted to receive a movable or adjustable bottom portion 5, called the valve, and a plunger 6. The valve 5 is the part of the mold which impresses upon the glass the surface configuration or design, and is for that purpose provided with projections and indentations, according to the design. Valves of different designs may be provided. The plunger 6 forms the main portion of the hollow of the tile, this hollow or back portion being circumscribed by the tile flange, the exterior surface of which is formed partly by the mold wall 3 and partly by a closure ring 7 which engages the mold wall and is engaged by the flange 8 of the plunger. Horizontal removable draw bars are indicated at 9 and 10.

This shoulder of the wall is indicated at 12, and the shoulder of the valve is shown at 13. Between these shoulders an interval 1 1 provides for lifting the work after molding, to expeditethe delivery. This mold wall is also provided with an upper shouldered bearing 15 for the reception of the closure ring 7, having interiorly beveled rectilinear lateral flanges 16, whichare designed to assist in forming the lateral under flanges or the shaping or forming surface of the mold wall, which is usually provided with a vertical or nearly vertical portion 16, to form the contact side of the tile.
The closure ring 7 is provided with an inside bearing surface 17, which receives the plunger 6 and serves to engage or stop the flange S of this plunger when it has been The which the lateral molding flanges 16 are joined. The shouldered portions 19 have each a mold face 20 and a rectilinear groove bearing 21, these extending laterally along and throughout the length of the ring. The end portions 22 of the closure ring are provided with openings 23 for the introduction of the draw bars 9 and 10.
The draw bars are removable parts of the mold, and when in place engage the lateral lengthwise bearings 21 of the ring and rest on bearings 21 of the end portions of the mold wall. The draw bars are of right and left character, and are horizontally straight from the end to the handle 25, which should be of wood. Each draw bar is designed to have in cross-section a vertical inner face 26, alined with the lateral portions of the inside bearing surface of the ring and forming a part of the bearing for the plunger, an inclined or beveled outer face 27, adapted to assist in molding the inclined back flange of the tile, a lower face 28, to shape the back shoulder of the tile, and an upper rib 29, for sliding engagement with the bearing 2i of the closure ring. By means of these devices the lateral undercut or inwardly sloped back flanges of the tile are easily and quickly molded in connection with the body of the tile. This molding is accomplished without danger of chipping or breaking the tile or its flanges, the molding draw bars being of slender form, independently operated and steadily guided in their motion of withdrawal from the formed tile and mold.
In the molding, the valve bottom being in position in the wall 8 of the mold, the closure ring having been placed and the draw bars having been inserted through the bearings of the mold wall, engaging the bearings 21 of the ring, the glass is dropped by the gatherer in the mold thus formed and the plunger is brought down in the mold, thereby forcing the glass into the space which forms the tile. The plunger is then released, the two draw bars taken out and the ring lifted off, when the tile can be taken out of the mold.

The molding apparatus can be used on a machine press such as is usually Worked by hand with a side lever, such presses being in ordinary use in glass factories.
I claim:
1.. In molding apparatus, the combination with circumscribing mold wall having upper and lower inside shoulder bearings and end bearings, a flanged plunger and a shouldered bottom or valve portion, of a bevelflanged closure ring having rectilinear horizontal groove bearings, and removable rectilinear draw bars engaging said end bearings and groove bearings throughout the length of the mold and having beveled outer faces, said draw bars forming, with the closure ring, the guide bearing I for the plunger. p
2. In tile molding apparatus, the combination with a circumsoribing mold wall having rectilinear end bearings and movable top and bottom portions of the mold, of a laterally grooved closure ring upon and engaging said mold wall, and removable rec- 5O tilinear draw bars having molding surfaces and engaging said end bearings and the grooves of said ring throughout the length of the mold.
3. A tile mold, having a circumscribing body wall provided with end bearings, a bevebflanged closure ring upon and engaging said body wall and having rectilinear bearing grooves alined with said end bearings, and independently removable draw I bars having molding surfaces and engaging said end bearings and said rectilinear bearing grooves.
i. A tile mold, having a body wall circumscribing a plunger opening, a circumscribing upper ring portion engaging the plunger and the body wall, and removable rectilinear beveled draw bars engaging the body wall, the upper ring portion and the plunger, said body wall having bearings to support the ring and the draw bars in vertically alined position at the upper portion of the plunger opening.
