J ..UN1TED "STATES PATENT OFFICE. I Him; DE MimcoQor Your; 1;. Y., iissreivoa TQ Permian-Amine mAnUrAc- TUBING coMPA vY, or NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION- or NEW Yon PRINTING-PLATE Eon AlJDRESSING-MACHINES.
, To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, F RANK DE Mrxrco, a citizen of theUnited States, and a "resi- "dent of New-York, in the county and State preferably rectangular in form-whereby a' of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Plates for 'Addressing-Machines, of which the following is aspecification.
. This invention relates to printing plates for addressing machines and has for its ob ject to provide a plate of the class specified.
of simple andrigid construction and com--' prising a minimumfof material.
lVith these ends in "view my improvements are illustrated in their preferred form in the drawings accompanying this specification wherein 1 V Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved plate. thereof and F ig.- 3 is a fragmentary per-- p Fig. 2 is an end elevation spective view illustrating a modification of my improvements.
My improved plate consists of one piece of sheet material preferably metal, of one thickness, having one or more lengthwise ribs 3, 4, offset therein. The blank thus formed is provided with suitable printing characters as 5 upstanding from the plate andpreferably located between said ribs 3, 4, in the body 2 of the plate. Said ribs 3, 4: are so-positioned widthwise of the plate as to provide portions 6, 7 of said plate be--,
yond said ribs. These widthwise extending portions 6, 7 are preferably in-the plane of body 2 so that the plate, comprising portions 2, 6 and 7, lies in one plane, ribs 3 and t being ofiset therein. Said plate is pair of opposite parallel continuous edges 8, 9 are provided and said ribs 3, 4 are ar ranged parallel therewith. Those portions 6, 7 of said plate extending Widthwise thereof beyond the ribs are preferably of different widths, portions 6 being herein illustrated as about three times the width of portion 7. By this provision the plates can be nested or-piled up with their Wide edge portions extending in one direction. Thus, if the printing characters on all the plates are arranged with their top edges-toward wide portion 6 for instance, said plates can be readily stacked in uniformity relatively to said characters. Wide portion 6 may-be considered the upper edge portion of the plate and room is provided thereon for any indicating marks or characters for classify ing and indexing the plates, according to 'well known practice. ln this connection I have illustrated one form of such indicating mark comprising offset or indented portion Patented Nov. 3, 1914. Application filed SeptemberS, 1912. 'Serial No 719,379. v
10. It will be observedthat said indented portion is a bent portion only and the plate is not cut therefor, whereby said plate may be restored to its original condition by push ing said indented portion back into the plane of edge; portion 6. It will also be observed that my improved plate is an unbroken, un- 1 perforated and uncut plate, beingcontinuone in all directions; also as the printing "characters 5 are embossed from the body of the plate, changes in lettering and changes in indicator indented portions may be made 'from time to time according to well known practice Without destroying or injuring the late. I
It will thus be seen that my improved plate is of-very simple construction and of. long life.
I claim:-
1. A printing late. for addressing machines, formed 0 one piece of sheet metal having a pair of opposite parallel continuous edges, ribs offset in said plate parallel with said opposite continuous edges and coextensive therewith, a portion of said plate extending widthwise said plate beyond one of said ofi'set portions and in theplane of the body of the plate and printing characters upstanding from the face of said plate, all of said plate except said ribs and printing characters lyin in one plane.-
2. A printing plate. or addressing machines, formed'of one piece of sheet metal having one pair of opposite parallel continuous edges, ribs oifset the-rein parallel with said opposite continuous edges, a portion of said plate extending widthwise said plate beyond one of said offset portions and in the plane of the body of the plate and printin characters upstanding from the face "of sai plate, all of said plate except said ribs and printing characters lying in one plane.
3. A printing plate for addressing machines, formed of one piece of sheet metal having a pair of opposite parallel continuous edges, ribs offset therein parallel with said opposite continuous edges, a portion of said plate extending widthwise said plate beyond one of said offset portions and in the plane of the body of the plate, another por tion of said plate extending widthwise said plate beyond the other ofl'set portion and in the plane of the body of the plate and printing characters upstanding from the face of said plate, all of said plate except said ribs and printing characters lying in one plane.
4(- A printing plate for addressing machines, formed of one piece of sheet metal 'having a pair of opposite parallel continuous edges,- ribs offset therein parallel with said opposite continuous edges, a portion of said plate extending widthwise said plate beyond one of said offset portions and in the plane of the body of the plate, another p01 tion of said plate extending widthwise said plate beyond the other ofi'set portion and in the plane of the body of the plate, said-ftwo extending portions being of different Widths and printing characters upstanding from the face of said plate.
5. A printmg plate for addressing machines, formed of one piece of 'sheet metal "having'one pair of opposite parallel continuous edges, ribs off set therein parallel with said opposite continuous edges, a portion of said plate extending widthwise said plate beyond one of said offset portions and in the plane of the body of the plate, another portion of said plate extending widthwise said S'gned at New York, N.
