- This invention relates to improvements in scaffolds intended for use among painters, paper-hangers and tradesmen or the like and it contemplates the construction of a scaffold that can be partially extended or collapsed while suspended and in use and that for transportation purposes may be completely collapsed or telescoped and then folded about a central hinge and locked when it will occupy a minimum amount of space and can be readily moved from place to place by one or two men.

To, all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN F. BrsBAoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Platteville, in the county of Grant and State of Vv isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaifolds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scaffolds intended for use among painters, paper-hangers and tradesmen or the like and it contemplates the construction of a scaffold that can be partially extended or collapsed while suspended and in use and that for transportation purposes may be completely collapsed or telescoped and then folded about a central hinge and locked when it will occupy a minimum amount of space and can be readily moved from place to place by one or two men.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which Figure l is a plan of my improved scaffold in its extended position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4lof Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan of the telescoped scaffold. Fig. 6 is a view of the same when folded about its central hinge and locked.

The body of my scaffold comprises twin sections each provided with relatively remote heads 1, 1 and united at their adjacent extremities by a hinge 2, which has depending members, the outer ends of which carry the pintle, and which is offset by said arms from the body of the scafiold. Either section comprises a plurality of slats 3, one of which is formed with a plurality of apertures 4:. Each end of the body of the scaffold is provided with an extensible cooperating section composed of slats 5 terminally secured in an end piece 6 and extending through the head 1 of said body portion; the slats 5 remote from the end piece 6 are secured to an end piece 7 and are disposed between the slats 3 of the body portion, the end piece 7 being slidably disposed upon slats 3, this arrangement making the cooperating sections movable with relation to the body sections.
8 is a pin carried by each end piece 7 for locking engagement with the apertured slat 8 whereby the cooperating sections may be one bail being somewhat larger than the other, and to each hail the sustaining ropes 10 are secured by which the scaffold is suspended.
Beneath each head 1 of the scafl'old a screw-eye 11 is provided that retains one end of a flexible wire 12 that passes beneath guide blocks 18, also secured to the head 1, and through an eyebolt 14 secured to the hinge-bolt of hinge 2; this wire is to give rigidity to the structure and after the scaffold is collapsed as shown in Fig. 5 and then folded upon the hinge 2 as shown in Fig. 6 the flexible wires will also be folded back into the position illustrated in the last named figure. Handles 15 secured to one of the outside slats of the body portion afford a means for readily carrying the scaffold when telescoped and folded. The bailed ends of the scaffold may now be locked together by means of their bails by oscillating said bails into the position shown in Fig. 6.
The members of the hinge 2 have their free ends ofiset, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the inner edge portions of said members will contact with each other, thus bracing the scaffold frame against caving at the center. I
What is claimed is A scaffold comprising companion sections, hinges connecting the inner ends of the sections, each hinge consisting of companion members rigidly connected to the sections, the free ends of the members being offset relatively to each other and projecting laterally of the sections to form braces and being connected to each other by a pintle, whereby the inner edge portions of the hinge members will contact with each other to braoe ture in the presence of two subscribing Witthe sections when extended, a flexible cable nesses. extended across the pintle and means for securing the cable to the sections, the sections JOHN BISBAGH' 5 being adapted to fold against'each other.
