CLINTON W. RUSSELL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BUNK FOR LOGGING-CARS.
` Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. a, 1914.
Application ied February 2, 1914. serial No. 816,024.
To all al1/omit may concern Be it known that I, CLINTON W. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of "Wayne and State of Michigan, khave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bunks for Logging-Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to bunks for logging cars and more particularly to a construction designed for use in carrying'large logs.
It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction in which the sliding of the log over the bunk is prevented and also one which will not be bent or otherwise injured by. the shocks due to the stopping or starting of the train.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a cross section through the bunk; and Fig. 2 is a per spective view thereof, showing the same as equipped with end stakes. K
In the hauling by rail of large and long logs it is usual to provide independent trucks each of which is provided with a supporting bunk or cross member on which the log rests. The draft is applied to one of the y trucks and is communicated through the log or logs to the other trucks in the train, and therefore it is essential to guard against any sliding of the log over the bunk. Heretofore constructions have been devised with upwardlyprojecting points or edges for biting into the log, but these have proven inadequate for the reason that the bark upon large logs is often very thick and has not suliicient tenacity to resist sliding movement. Furthermore, the stresses that are exerted upon such points are frequently so great as to bend or break the same. l/Vith my improved construction I have overcome these difficulties by forming the section of the supporting bunk of such a character that it will cut through the bark and obtain a holding grip in the wood of the log. The section is also one which so reinforces the supporting edge that the latter will neither' bend nor break.
In detail, A is the bunk which is formed preferably of cast steel, and is of the shape `Gepiel et this patent ineyhe obtained for of a modified I-beam, having the base flange B, a vertical web C and a spear-shaped head D. The latter is formed with the narrow upper edge E and the downwardly and oppositely inclined flanges F. At suitable points distributed along the beam are lateral reinforcing flanges I-I extending between the flanges F and B, while at the ends of the beam are headv portions I and J. I-Iowever, the spear-shaped cross section is preferably maintained throughout the length.
In use, whenever a log is deposited upon the bunk, the spear-shaped head will force its way through the soft bark without regard to the depth until it obtainsa firm hold of the wood. This/will prevent any relative movement of the truck andv log due to iner-y tia in starting or stopping, while the reinforcement of the edge E by the inclined l `flanges F is suiiicient to prevent bending `or breaking. y
' What I claim as my invention is,-
l. A bunk for logging cars, comprising a beam having a spear-shaped' cross section forming the supporting bearing for the log.`
2. A bunk for l.logging cars, comprising a beam having a vertical web portion, and a head vportion of a spear-shaped cross section forming a supporting bearing for the log.
3. A bunk for logging cars, comprising a modified I-beam having a head of spearshaped cross section forming a supporting bearing for the log.
et. A bunk for logging cars, comprising a modified I-beam having a base flange, a central vertical web, and a spear-shaped head with .its lpoint centrally above said web and downwardly and oppositely inclined flanges.
5. A bunk for logging cars, comprising a modified I-beam having a head portion of spear-shaped cross section, a central vertical web, a base flange, and transversely-arranged webs connecting the base flanges and spear-shaped head at intervals.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLINTON YV. RUSSELL.
