Specification of Letters Patent. P tented Oct. 20,
Application filed .Tu1y'2, 1914. Serial No. 348,692. I
To all whom it may; concern State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Settings, tion.
My invention relates to gem settings of the two-piece type, that is to say, settings comprising a body portion located upona base portion. It has heretofore been at of which the following is a specifica tempted to assemble these settings by locating the two members relatively to each other by the eye prior to their engagement. The small size of the parts and their irregularity of contourhave rendered it practically impossible to arrange them concentrically. To the end of overcoming this difiiculty, and of attaining the desired result in a cheap and ornamental structure, my invention consists in such parts and combinations of parts-as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2, are plan and side elevations respectively of the base member, Figs. 8 and 4, similar views respectively of the blank bent into final position, Fig. 5, a plan of the complete setting, and Fig. 6, a'section of the same on line it, w, of Fig. 5. I
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In constructing my setting a blank is cut and formed by suitable tools from thin metal. It comprises a substantially circular body a provided with openings to admit light to a gem. These openings inthe present instance consist of a central circular opening a, and radial openings a producing a resultant annular base a, and upwardly inclined radial arms a connected at their outer ends by a substantially circular scalloped border or. Integral with this border are radial arms B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The arms B are next folded over upwardly, inwardly, and downwardly, form- Copies of this patentmay be obtained forfiv e cents each, by addressing'the Commissioner of. Patents,
clined from the outer ing loops 6,; the free end portionsb of the arms a are downwardly and inwardly in A to the inner surface of the portion a thereof with which they contact thus formmg aseriesof substantially conical bearing surfaces as willbe later seen. The setting QFF Q PROVIDENCE, :anonn rs'riarin, assrenon ro'rotr'rnn & BUFFINTON COMPANY, A oonrona'rron or rvnonn ISLAND.
member C comprisesin the present instance a cup having/a bottom 0 providedwith a central opening to admit the light and with supporting prongs 0" rising from the body adapted to embrace a gem. In assembling these parts the operator manually placesthe member C in the member B concentrically. v by resting the bottom c upon the inclined portionsb which center with the latter,
the setting automatically. 1 Then the solder may be applied tothe, parts at the point cl.
What I claim is, I 1. A. setting consistingof a base member in a single integral element comprisingasubstantially circular body with openlngs, upwardly then inwardly and then downwardly inclined radial arms havinga scalloped border between said arms, and a cup seated upon the arms and provided with prongs to support a gem. I
2. In a setting,
. a base provided with a I body and a central opening andwith upwardly then inwardly and then downwardly inclined arms converging from the periphi l opening and a cup seatedupon said ldown ery of the body to: the base around said wardly and inwardly inclined arms andhavmg prongs.
3. In a setting, the combination of a base, a
a body 'upon the base, arms upon the body extending first upwardly, then inwardly and then downwardly toward {the center of the base, a cup seated *uponthe arms, and
prongs upon thecup. we 1 In testimony whereof. I have aiiiXed my slgnature in presence of two witnesses.
