To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, WILLARD GREEN FRANKLIN, of Shelbina, in the county of Shelby and State of Missouri, havei`nvented a new and useful Improvement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled iu the artto make and 'use the same, reference being had to the accomstructions, and which shall be simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture; and
It consists in the construction and combination. of the various parts of the gate, as Vhereinafter more fully described. p
A is the front post, against which the gate B shuts in the ordinary manner.
B is the gate, the top rail b1 of which is extended to the rearward, and has a weight-box, C, attached to it. `D is the rear gate-post, to the top of which is attached or upon it is formed a pivot, d', which enters a hole or socket in the top rail b1 of the gate B, near the rear vertical rail or bar b2 of said gate, so that the gate, when closed, may be in proper position with respect to the posts A and D.
To the rear part of the gate B is attached abrace, h3, the rear end of which projects and is rounded oli', or has a pivot, b, formed upon it, which enters a step or socket, E. v e
The. step E may be secured at the base of the post D, or to said post above its base, as may be desired or convenient.
The pivot b4 is arranged, iu the rear of the vertical line, through `the pivot d', as shown in the igure, so that the forward end of the gate may rise, as the gate is swung open, to pass over obstructions that might otherwise interfere with its operation. This construction requires the upper part oi' the socket or hole, in which the pivot (l works, to be enlarged, so that the said pivot may not interfere with the rise of the forward eud'of the gate as it is swung op'en.
Having thus described myinventiou, l
I claim as new and desire to secure by ALetters PatentvThe combination of the rearwardly-extended rail b, weight C, pivot d', brace b, and pivot by with the gate B and post D, said parts being constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
