ALFRED (Tran-1B, a citizen of the United States. residing at Eliza both. in the county of Union and State of New Jersey. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanisms for fiewingrMachines, of which the following: is a specification. reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to feeding mecha nism for that class of sewing machines adapted more especially for basting and the like, in which intermittent feeding movements are imparted to the work by a toothed feed-wheel.
In the present construction the machine is provided with the usual reciprocating needle and springrproscd presser-bar, the latter being provided at its lower end with a carrier formed with depending spaced arms which support the shank of a yielding presser-foot. The yoke formed by the spaced dependine' arms of said carrier serves to confine a channeled bearing sleeve to receive one end of a rotary shaft for the feed wheel, said sleeve normally resting upon the shank of thepressenfoot under the action of a spring titted in a socket formed in the carrier intermediate said arms. The opposite end of the rotary shaft is journaled in a bearing member pivotally supported above the bed-plate. and is provided with a ratchet-wheel which is engaged by a pawl actuated from a rocleshal't operatively connected with the driving shaft of the machine.
The feeding movements are controlled by a manually operated arm having a cam surface adapted to engage a pin carried by the actuating pawl, whereby the latter is held out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel during a portion of this movement; and

The presser-bar is provided with the usual lifting rock-lever. and a treadle-rod connected to the latter carries a laterally extending memberadapted to engage the pawlcontrolling arm. whereby said arm may be operated by the lifting treadle for the presser-bar. A. sprint is provided for returning said arm to neutral position upon its release.
It will be seen that the feed-wheel is mov' able with and also independently of the Specification of Letters Patent.

As represented in the drawings, the invention is shown in connection with a sewing machine constructed with the bed-plate A, hollow standard B and overhanging arm C, in which is journaled the mainshaft 1 carrying at its outer end the balance Wheel 2 and grooved belt-pulley 3. In, the head of the overhanging arm C is journaled the usual reciprocatory needle-bar 4 carrying needle 5, and the presser-bar (3 provided with collar 7 secured to said bar by means of screw 9 and serving to limit the movement of the bar under the action of a spring 9 surrounding the bar intermediate the hub 10 of a lateral arm 11, secured to said bar by means of screw 12, and the upper portion of the bracket-arm. The feeding members comprise a lower toothed feed-wheel 13 and a positively driven upper toothed wheel 14. The lower feed-wheel is mounted upon shaft 15 journaled within the hub 16 of a bracket 17 secured within a depression 18 formed in the bed-plate A. by means of screws 19. The feed-wheel 13 projects above an aperture 20 formed in the] throat-plate 21. v
To the lower end of presser-bar 6 is secured by means of screw 22 the laterally ex tending shank :23 of a carrier for the presserfoot. said carrier being provided with spaced dependin arms "21 adapted to support the shank Q5 of a p'resser-foot 26, said shank beingg secured to the arms by means of-screws 21. The presser-foot 26 is pivotally connected to its shank by means of a pin 28', and a light pressure is maintained upon said foot by means of a wire spring 29 secured to the shank 25 by means of screw 30. its other end entering an aperture 31 formed in the presser-foot.
The upper feed-wheel '14 is carried by a rotary shaft 32 being fixed against movewent thereon by means of screw The outer end of shaft 32 adjacent feed-wheel 14 is iournaleil within a bearing sleeve 34 formed with oppositely dis'pwed channels 35 which r ceive the depending spaced arm 24 of the prcsser-foot carrier, said boss normally Itd mg upon the upper face of the presser-foot shank 25 under the pressure of a spring 3?: seated within a socket formed within the head of the carrier intermediate arms 24. The opposite end of rotary shaft 32 is journalcd within the hub of a bearing member 37 provided with a lateral stud 38 by which said bearing member is pivotally supported within the sleeve 39 of a standard 40 fcrmed with a base portion 41 secured upon the upper face of the bed-plate A by means of screws 42. The stud 38 is con fined within sleeve $59 by means of a collar 43.
The driving means for feed-wheel 14 comprise a ratchet-wheel 44 provided with a hub t5 secured in fixed position upon shaft 32 by means of screw 46. Journaled upon shaft intermediate ratchet wheel 44 and the hub of the bearing member 37 is the hub of a plural-armed lever 47, its upper arm being provided with an aperture to receive stud 48 overhanging ratchet-Wheel 44 and supporting the pawl 49 pressed downwardly by coil-spring 50 to engage the teeth of said ratclietwlieel. The lower arm 51 of I'Ot'lC-lQVQl' 47 is secured by means of screw 5'2 to one end of a link 53, the opposite end of said link being secured by means of screw to upwardly extending crank-arm 56 provided with a hub 57 secured by means of a screw 58 upon a shaft 59 adapted to rock below the bed-plate upon pivot studs 59".
Upon rock-shaft 59 is secured by means of screws 61 the hub 62 of a laterally extend ing arm 6;} provided with a segmental slot 64 to receive a stud bolt 65 clamped within a split collar (36 at the lower end of pitman (37. the latter extending upwardly through the standard B and being provided with straps to embrace an eccentric 68 upon main-shaft 1. It will be seen that the adjustment of pitman 67 with respect to arm 63 will regulate the normal length of movement of crank-arm 56 and consequently, through rock-lever 47 and pawl 49, modify the. feeding movement imparted to feed wheel 14.
A controlling device is provided for actuating-pawl 49. Said device comprises an arm (1%) provided with a finger-lever 70, said arm being pivoted by means of stud 71 to a bracket 72, said bracket being provided with a base portion 73 secured upon the up per face of bed-plate A by means of screws 74. The arm (39 is provided with a cam surface 75 normally disposed in a neutral position relative to pin 60 carried by actuating pawl 49, under the action of a spring '76 having one end secured to finger-lever by means of the screw 77 and its other end entering an aperture formed in the bracket 79. In itsv neutral position the arm (39 permits pawl 49 to engage the teeth adjacent thereto at the beginning of its forward movement and thus to impart a maximum feeding movcment'to the feed-wheel 14 for the formation of a long basting stitch. \Vhen, however, the finger-lever 70 is depressed against the action of the spring 76, the cam surface of the arm 69 is ele vated to engage pin (30 and lift pawl 49 so that. the latter on its forward stroke will ride above the ratche't tecth until its pin passes the cam surface of the arm, at which point the pawl is permitted to engage a tooth of the ratchctwheel and thereby of feet a short umvemcnt of the feed-wheel. 'lhc lnovcnu'nt of the pawl controlling arm is limited by means of a stop-screw 81 the shank of which passes through a slot formed in the arm above stud 71 being supported by bra ket 72. Lateral arm ll secured to presser-bar 3 is adapted to support an upwardly extending link 82 formed with a longitudinal slot 83 to receive the reduced end S t of a lifting lever 85 fulcrumcd by means of stutbscrew 86 upon the overhanging arm C of the sewing machine. The opposite end of the lifting rock-lever is connected by means of screw 87 with lreadlero l 88 having its lower end formed with a hook 89 to receive chain 90 which in practicecis connected to a suitable -treadle. Upon the treadle-rod 88 is Fixed a collar 91 to the upper face of which is secured by means of screw 92 a laterally extending spring arm 93, the outer end of which overhangs linger-lever 70 of pawl-controlling arm 69. it will be seen that a limited movement of trcadle-rod 88 will through arm 93, elevate the cam surface of pawl-controlling arm 69 to decrease the length of feeding movement, and this without affecting the presserbar, inasmuch as the reduced end 84 of lifting rock-lever 85 is permitted to move within the slot 83 of arm 82 which serves to transmit lifting movements to thc presser-bar.
It will be understood that the scope of the present invention is not limited to the specific embodiment thereof herein shown and described, it being evident that the various parts thereof may be widely varied both in construction and arrangement.
