Description

G. A. MARSH. TIPPING MACHINE. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 4, 1914. 1

A. MARSH, OF DIXFIELD, MAINE.
TIPPING-MACHINE.
To all whom it concern i Be it known that L'GEORGEiA. MARSH, of Dixfield, in the'county of Oxford and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tipping-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to can tipping ma- 1 chines such as are used in the canning 111-. dustry for sealing the vent holes of the cans after the caps have been soldered in place. 7 The'invention relates; particularly to certain improvements in the construction of r the tipping machine patented to me Aug. 6,
1912 and numbered 1,034,47 3 and the object of the invention is to make the machine more compact and to provide means for moreaccuratcly adjustingthe parts.
The machine covered by my a line of loans,'a'tipping iron pivoted above i the line of cans to a pivoted frame and means actuated by the passing can for "swinging the pivoted frame to lower the tipping iron-at the right instantqto drop its point into the vent holejof the can andto lift it again after it had been carried a limited distance-by-the movement of the can whereby thetipping iron would swing back to its normal position.
My invention may best be understood reference to the accompanying drawing,
wherein isshown a tipping machine of the general character"described with my improved construction applied thereto.
In th drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation ofgthe machine, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, Fig. 3 isa plan, Fig. 4 is a section on the line as m of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the-pivot for suspending the tipping implement and its support. Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the "same, and Fig. 7 isa detail of the guidefor centering the tipping implement.
In the drawing dicate' like parts. 1
The tipping machine is usually applied to a conveyer having a movable'bed consisting of a series of lags 1 traveling on'stringe like reference figures in- ;ers 2 and: connected together by a sprocket 50.
chain3. -Aseries of cans 4 are fed by the movable bed in a continuous line as they come-"from the capping machine; The tip- I ping machine is secured by suitable means to the side of one of the stringers 2 and the tipping iron Shaving a-spindle 8 is hung l with a pivoted connection from a vertically H Specification of Letters Patent.

movable frame which is raised and supported by aspring and depressed by a lever actuated by the side of the passing can.
-As here shown, the frame consists of a .rod 5 adaptedto slide vertically in guides 6 and 7 positioned one above the other. The rod 5 is prevented from turning and is held steadily'in positionby a guide rod 10 parallel with the rod 5 and connected 7 with it atthe upper end by a cross head 9. The lower end of the rod 10 passes through a guide 10K and a helical springfll surrounds the rod and provides the means for sustaining and lifting the entire frame in- ;cluding the tipping iron. The lower end of thespring 11 lmpinges on the guide 10' and theupper end rests against an adjusting nut former patent included a feeding mechanism for feeding 20.
12 threaded on the rod. By screwing the nut up or down the tension of'the spring may be regulated and the lifting power of the frame nicely adjusted.
lTh. tipping iron 8 is suspended by its stem from the pivot 13 and the latter is carried by a horizontally adjustable rod 1 1 fittingin the crosshead 9, the rod being held in place by a setscrew 15'. The pivot is so secured to the end of the rodas to be verticallyad ustable. As herein shown a verticatguide 18 is secured to the end of the ,rod 14 and in this guide is a pivot block 16 carrying the pivot 13 to which the tipping implement is hung.
A screw 17 journaled in the guide 18 engages the block 16 and providesthe means for its vertical adjustment and a vertical rod -17 secured to the guide 18 parallel with the'screw 17 passes through the innerportion of the pivot block and serves to guide the same. g
The adjustment of the tipping iron in the direction of the feed of the cans is secured by a V-shaped guide 19 adjustably secured to the end of a bracket 20' projecting out from the body of the machine. This guide receives and centers the stem of the tipping iron as it swings back after tipping the can and" its position determines the position of the tipping iron and enables it to be so adjusted that it will enter the vent hole when the frame is depressed. The frame and the tipping iron are depressed by the force exerted by the passing can.
i As here shown the rod 5 is depressed by a centrally pivoted lever 21, one end of which engages a pin 22 set in a slot in the lower end of the rod. The opposite end of the frame 38 and pressed inwardly against the.
lever carries an antifriction roll 23 which bears normally against a bearing surface 24 formed on the pivoted arm 26. The arm 26 carries on its free end an antifrlction roll 27 which is designed to contact with the side of each can as it passes-by and to be forced outwardly thereby. As the arm 26 swings outwardly, the lever 21 is moved on its pivot point and its outer end depresses the rod 5. r The upper portion of the roll 27 is formed into an upwardly flaring flange which fits over the upper corner of the can and tends to hold it from tilting on its traveling bed.
The arm 26 is prevented from swinging too far inward when not in contact with a can by means of a hook 34 secured to the 1 arm 26 and extending outward to engage the rod 28 which forms the pivot for the lever 21. l
Lateral guides 29 are provided to hold the cans in line while they are passing the tipping mechanism and a double upper guide plate 30 is located so that the cans pass immediately beneath it, the cans. being thereby prevented from tilting and getting out of position. The guide plate 30 is.
secured to the lower end of a guide rod 32 and the latter is adjustably secured in a bracket 31 fastened to the frame of the ma-. chine. The can is given a rotating move ment as it passes the tipping mechanism by means of a horizontally disposed rubber tired roller 33 journaled in a swinging side of the passing can by a spring 35.
. Rotation is given to the roll 33 by a pulley 36 which isfitted to a pulley not here shown andfrom which power is derived. From what has been said the. operation of my improved machine may be readily understood. As the cans pass by, each can comes in contact with the roll 27 on the arm 26 and'forcing it outward depresses the end of the-lever 21 and the frame'to which the tipping iron is hung. The point of the iron enters the'vent hole and, as the can moves along, it carries the tipping iron along with it far enough to seal the vent hole. The can is rotated by the roll 33 during thisopera-tio'n insuring the even distribution of the solder in the vent hole. 7 When the canhas passed by, the arm 26 is released and the rod 5 and its connecting parts carrying the tipping iron are lifted and the iron swings back to a bearing in'the forked guide 19 where it remains until the next can comes along.
-The mechanism for feeding solder to the tipping iron which is no part of my present invention is not shown herein.
A tipping machine constructed as above described is simple and compact. It con tains all the adjustments necessary to accurately place the tipping iron so that its point will always strike in the vent hole.
implement pivoted to roll.
