snrannron MECHANISM.
Specification'of Letters Patent.
Patented'sept. ,8, 1914:.
Application filed December 15, 1913. Serial No. 806,680.
To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, GEORGE D. BEASTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the cityxof Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Y Improvements in Separator Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. i
The primary purpose of my improved mechanism is to effect the expeditious and. efiicient separation of liquid from solid mat ter in the treatment of garbage, packing house by-products and the like, and in its preferred form the apparatus comprises a fluid actuated press having a cylinder provided with a fluid operated draining gate and a conical draining piston for separating liquid from solid matter, in combination with a tank adapted to discharge into the cylinder, means for carrying off from the cylinder liquid extracted from solid matter therein, and means for carrying off solids discharged from the cylinder by the piston when the gate is open.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a part sectional elevation of apparatus embodyingmy invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the longitudinal axis of one of the presses; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4; is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a section of a press cylinder with the-screen therein.
' As illustrated in the drawings, the mechanism comprises a plurality of units each having a power cylinder 1 and work cylinder 2 mounted on supports 3, 4:, and 5 which rest upon the respective foundation members 6, 7 and 8. Tanks 9 discharge through ducts 10, controlled by valves 11, to the respective cylinders 2, and the cylinders 2 dis charge, under control of the respective im perforate head gates 14, to a channel 12 containing a conveyer 13. o
Each cylinder 1 is provided with the heads 15 and contains a piston 16 fixed on a rod 17 which isadapted to reciprocate in the heads 15. 1
Each cylinder 2 has therein a perforated lining or screen 18, and a ram 19 which is fixed on the rod 17 and is movable thereby within the perforated lining 18. As each rod 17 bears. constantly'in heads 15, these heads act through the rods to hold the rams 19 in correct alinement" and prevent their flanges '2 on the cylinders. bottoms of the respective cylinders 24' are bearing with undue forceupon the interiors of the screens 18 and cylinders 2, partic'u larly in the advanced positions of the pistons.
The ends of each cylinder 1 are connected by pipes 20 and 21 with a valve 22 which controls the communicationof the respective pipes with an inlet pipe 23 and an exhaust pipe 24, whereby water is admitted to one end and exhausted from the other end of Upright cylinders 24 are fixed adj acent to the forward ends of the respective cylinders 2 and contain pistons 25 connected 1 by rods 26 with yokes 27 on the respective gates 141-; the gates being adapted to reciprocate in the vertical ways 28', being tapered downwardly to make-a liquid tight engage- :ment with the similarly tapered seats 28*,
and having tapered caps 14* making :liquid tight engagement with the similarly tapered The tops and connected by the pipes 29 and 30, through the valves 31, with inlet pipes 32 and exhaust pipes 33, whereby water is admitted to either end of the cylinders and simultaneously exhausted from the other end to open and close the gate. I
Each cylinder 2 has therein, to carry off the liquid passed through the screen 18, the internal circular draining channels 34 which are intersected by the longitudinal bottom draining channel 35, the latter dischargingthrough the branches 36 to a drain pipe 37.
Each ram 19 has a conical face 19 containing draining channels 19 which discharge through passages 19 and 19 to the cylinder 2 in the rear of the ram and each ram face is provided with conical screen 38 for passing liquid from the mass in front of the ram. to the discharge channels and mass usually holding anexcess of liquid due ,to thelack of proper provisions for extracting it.
Each gate 1 1 is provided with the 1n ternal screens 39, and with the internal draining channels 14c intersected by a chan-' nel 14 which communicates with a pipe 1 1, the latter discharging to a funnel 4O connected with the pipe 37.
In operation, the piston 16 and ram 19 of a unit are drawn back to the positions shown in Fig. 2 by exhausting water from the cylinder 1 through the pipe 20 and admitting water under pressure to such cylinder through the pipe 21. The valve 11 is then opened and solid and liquid matters are delivered from the tank 9 through the duct 10 to the cylinder 2 in front of the ram 19, the gate 151- being in position to close the forward end of such cylinder. When the cylinder 2 has received its charge, water is exhausted from the cylinder 1 through the pipe'21 and water under pressure is admitted to the cylinder through the pipe 20 to ad -Iance the piston 16 and ram 19, the latter squeezing the solid matter in the cyln the liquid matter, which latter flows through the screens 18, 38 and 39 and is ca 126L401? by the several channels and passages to the pipe 37. The liquid having been expressed from the solid matter, water is exhausted from the cylinders 24 through the pipes 29 and water under pressure is adto lift the pistons 25 which act through the rods 26 and yoke 27 to open the gate 1 1. The ram 19 is then moved forward to discharge the solid matter from the cylinder 2 to the channel 12 and onto the conveyer 13, by which it is carried away. The contents the c linder 2 havin been dischar ed water is exhausted from the cylinders 24' the pipes to move the pistons 25 and close the gate 14, and the piston 16 and ram 19 j mg circular channels and a channel lnterare withdrawn to position for pressing the succeeding charge, as previously described. Having described my invention, I claim: 1. In apparatus of the character described, a press cylinder having an imperforate head gate provided with drainage means, a ram provided with drainage means, and means for reciprocating said rum in said cylinder. In apparatus of the character. described, a press cylinder having an imperfofrate head ate provided with drainage channels, a 11 having forwardly projecting tapered part, and means for reciprocating said ram insaid cylinder.
3. In apparatus of the character described, a press cylinder having drainage means, a reciprocating imperforate head gate for said cylinder, said gate having drainage means,
' member at the top of said end, in combination with an end gate having wedge shaped guides movable in said wedge shaped ways, wedge shaped bottom part movable in said seat, and a wedge shaped top part adapted to fit said wedge shaped member.
5. In apparatus of the character described,
' a ram cylinder having drainage means, an inner 2 so as to effectually express theremperforate head gate for said cylinder and having drainage means, a ram 1n sald cylinder and having drainage means, a power cylinder having heads at opposite ends thereof, a piston adapted to reciprocate in 1 said power cylinder, and a piston rod bearing in said heads and connecting said pis- 5 ton and ram.
mitted to these cylinders through the pipes 1 I a cylinder containing circular channels'and a longitudinal bottom channel intersecting said circular channels and having one or more outlets, acylindrical screen within said cylinder, an imperforatehead gate for said cylinder and having drainage means, and a ram adapted to reciprocate Within said screen andhaving drainage means. through the pipes 30 and admitted through 1 a cylinder having drainage means, a head In apparatus of the character described,
*5. In apparatus of the character described,
gate for said cylinder, said head gate havsecting them, a screen supported by said head gate and extending over said channels,
