Description

UNITED srxrns PATENT once.
CURTIS L. CRUVER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SOUNDING TOY.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OnR'rIs L. ORUVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sounding Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a toy of novel construction which will issue a whistling sound resembling the call of a bird.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a toy embodying the features of my invention, showing the manner of holdingand operating the toy. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The toy comprises a hollow cylinder 5 having a slot 6 running from end to end thereof. The cylinder 5 may be formed from a fiat piece of sheet metal rolled into the form of a tube, the adjacent meeting edges being spaced apart a suitable distance to form a slot 6.
One end of the cylinder is closed by 1! ca p 7 which may be of sheet metal and may be secured to the cylinder by any common or preferred form of scam 8. An opening 9 may be provided centrally of the cap 7.
The opposite end of the cylinder 5 is closed by a head 10 of relatively great thi k ness. In the outer side of this head is formed a recess 11, and a guide opening 12 leads from the bottom of said recess to the inner side of the head. The head may be conveniently secured in place by a staple 1O bridging the slot 6 in the cylinder and entering said head.
A device 18 is mounted at the outer side of the head 10, said device comprising a disk 14; having a semi-spherical boss 15 at its inner side, and further having a handle 16 at its outer side. The handle 16 may be given the general shape of a bird, as indicated in Fig. 2, if desired. The device 13 may be conveniently made of an integral piece of metal. Said device isco-nneoted to the head in the present instance by means of an attaching member or stem 17 which may be in the form of an ordinary nail, the

point end of the nail being secured in a bore 18 in the boss 15. Said nail extends through the guide opening 12 in the head 10, and the head of the nail overlies the inner end of said opening 12 to prevent withdrawal of the nail from said opening.
- In use, the handle 16 is grasped in one hand, and the opposite end of the cylinder 5 in the other, and said parts are'given a relative rotary or twisting movement with the boss 15 in light frictional contact with the mouth of the recess 11. Owing to this friction between the parts, a whistling sound will be issued, resembling somewhat the call of a bird. This sound is augumented and intensified by the cylinder 5, so as to be very clearly audible.
In the preferred form of my invention, I construct the head 10 of wood, and the device 13, including the boss 15, of metal, but it is not absolutely essential that these materials be used.
Other minor changes within the scope of the claims may also be made without departin g from the spirit of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A sounding toy comprising a cylinder having a longitudinal slot therein, a cap closing one end of said cylinder, a head closing the other end of said cylinder, said head having a recess in its outer side, an operating device positioned adjacent to the outer side of said head, and comprising a circular boss projecting into said recess and being adapted to be rotated in light frictional engagement with the walls thereof to create a whistling sound, a handle rigid with said boss for turning the latter, and a pin adapted to form a loose rotatable connection between said boss and said head.
2. A sounding toy comprising a piece of sheet metal rolled to form a cylinder, the meeting edges of the metal being spaced apart to form a slot extending from end to end of the cylinder, a sheet metal cap fixed to and closing one-end of the cylinder, a wooden head fitting into the opposite end of the cylinder, a staple bridging said slot and driven into said head for securing the latter in place, said head having a recess in its outer face and having a guide opening extending from the bottom of said recess to the inner side of said head, a device to co- 1 engagement With the Walls of said recess to operate With said head comprising a stem 1 produce a sound. 10 lllOfiLblY mounted in said guide opening and In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hav" 1g an enlargement at its inner end, a in the presence of two Witnesses. seinrspherieal boss fixed to the outer end CURTIS L. end of said recess, and a handle fixed to F. E. HAYWARD,
said boss for rotating said boss in frictional E1). E. J. K0011.
