To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Hinge-Butts and Methods of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinge butts and particularly to the butts of, or separate parts of, what are known as invisible hinges wherein one butt or part thereof fits in and is movable in the other butt or a part' there of; and the invention consists of an improvement in hinge butts of this class and in the method of making the same, whereby a hinge butt or butts of the class specied consists of a part formed from thin metal inclosed, or partially inclosed', in a casting of metal, or a. composition of metals, whereby a hinge butt of said form may be completely finished in a mold, thus avoiding all machining, finishing, dressing, or the like, and whereby a. portion of one butt or part will fit snugly in and work freely and smoothly in the other butt or part.
` The invention is fully disclosed in the. following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view showing a mold which I employ and showing a complete section of a hinge butt involving my invention, the section being on the line .1 1

In Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawing, I have shown a complete hinge comprising a butt or part a and a 'butt or part Z). The butt or part b consists of a plate b2 adapted to be secured to a door post, frame, or other stationary member, in the usual manner, and said plate is provided with a curved arm l b3 which is pivoted in a yoke-shaped or boX- shaped member c fitted into and detachabl'y Secured 'in a corresponding yoke-shaped or box-shaped part a2 lof the hinge butt or member a', all these parts, in the main, being of the usual and well known construction consists of the butt a and the method of making the same.
In carrying my invention into effect, or in shaped or box-shaped core or frame member preferably stamped from sheet steel, and the side portions thereof are provided with oppositely directed wing members af* in the outer end portions of which are formed screw holes a5, and in the inner end portions of which are formed other screw holes a, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, and as parprovide a mold d consisting of a female member e and a male member f, and the female member e is provided with a chamber e2 of the same general form -as'the body portion of the yoke-shaped or box-shaped frame member a3 and is adapted to receive ada ted to receive the wing portions a4 of sai frame member, and the inner parts e* parts. `The male member f of the mold is provided with a central plunger f2 of less disame form and adapted to enter said chamber, and the face portion of the metal membei; f is alsoprovided withuoppositelyarranged recesses f which correspond with the recesses e3 and have raised portions f* adapted to form in the face o the wing portions of the complete hinge butt a, recesses a7 to receive the oppositely directed wing portions c2 of the part 0 which is detachably secured in the hinge butt a, in the operation of forming a complete hinge, as shown inFig. 3. The male member f is also provided with pin plungers f5 which correspond with the screw holes a5 in the wing portions of the frame member a3, and with other pin plungers f? which correspond with the screw holes a6 in said frame member, and the pin plungers f5 are preferably larger than the pin plungers f6.

making the hinge butt a, I provide a yokeof which' are of greater depth than the outer mensions than the chamber e2 but ofthe hinge butt a, the mold members c and f are secured together, after which the molten metal, or a composition of metals in a molten condition is forced into the mold through an aperture or apertures g, or in thev usual .or any preferred way; and this molten metal, with the construction shown, will entirely inclose all parts of the frame member at. With the construction shown, the body of the frame member a3 would have only a thin coating ofthe cast metal on the outer side thereof, as shown at la, in Fig. 2,- and on the inner side thereof would be a corresponding thin coating h2 except at the sides 71.3, which said coating is' preferably thicker, while the wing4 portions of said butt a would be provided on both sides with thick heavy coatings of cast metal, as shown at h4.
In the above described' operation, the pin plungers f3 of the part a* of the mold, form screw holes z' in the hinge butt a which are afterward threaded to receive the screws 2 which secure the parts c to the butt a in the operation of forming the complete hinge, and the pin plungers f5 form larger screw holes 3 through which are passed other screws used in securing the hinge butt a to a door or other swinging device. The
screw holes z' formed by the pin plungers f8 and the screw holes aformed by the pm plungers f5 are of less dimensions than the correspondingr screw holes in the wing por tions a4 of the frame member a3 of the butt a, and with this construction, the cast metal through which the screws are passed incloses said kscrews and aids in binding the inner and outer parts of the castings of the wing portions of the hinge butt a together, as le'arly shown in Fig.'3, and as indicated in With my improvement, the hinge butt a is exactly and accurately finished in the operationof casting or molding, as herein described, and the yoke-shaped or box-shaped part of the butt a will exactly and snugly receive the part 0 of the hinge butt b which is independently formed, without any machining or other finishing of said butt a,
and the butt a may thus be made, completed, 5 and finished much more economically and expeditiously than when cast or otherwise formed as a hole, and afterward inished and bored and recessed to receive the screws by which said butt is secured to a swinging 5 door or other device, and the screws 2 which secure the part c of the butt b in the butt a and the recesses a7 which receive the part 02 of said butt b.

the hinge butt a. as herein shown and de scribed and the method of using the same are old, and my invention is not limited to the particular form of the butt a herein claimed and described, nor to the formation 6E of a hinge butt designed for use as a part of an invisible hinge, and my said improvement may be utilized in the construction of hinge butts of dierent styles, shapes, or forms, and designed for use in connection with, or as a part of hinges of other shapes, forms, or designs.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hinge butt, comprising an inner core or frame member of sheet metal inclosed and reinforced partially or wholly by a casting or castings.
2. A hinge butt, comprising a yoke-shaped or box-shaped frame member of sheet metal and having side wings, said parts being inclosed and reinforced by a metal casting or castings.
