Another land morefspeciic object visito. provide a hat fbox'that i s"`formed of. card# board or the likeand consists of a rectangular body having ai'la'nged and removable viid or cover and a :hinged side wall that is hinged to the box'itself andis hinged intermediate its ends so as to be easily opened and moved into closed position.
My invention further aims to improve hat i boxes so as to render them more prz'tctical,
hinged side in elevation,
of my invention as reliable vand efficient,l inexpensive to manufacture and more commercially desirable.
The above and additional o-b]ects are accomplished by suoli means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.
lith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several view s of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved hat box showing the Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken `through my improved box showing the hinged side in closed position, and Fig. 3 is a vertical-sectional view showing' the hinged side in open position.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the nuinerall designates as an entirety a receptacle which consists ofa Specification of Lettersiatent.

bottom-wall2and side walls 3. The side walls 3 are secured to three of the edges of `thebottom 2, said'=.bottoin being rectangular jor square as desired, and to the'other'edge 0f tllbottom. 2 .is secured a hinged 'wall 4.
A fiangedvlid 5 Ais arranged tobe mounted upon the side walls 3 with its flanges -6'engaging the outer faces thereof; Secured upon the inner faces of the opposed side walls 3 adjacent the free verticaljedges thereof are vertical angle strips '7 that are approximately L-shaped in cross section and preferably formedcardboard 'These -strips 7 may besecured byfastening means, not shown, if desired,
`but are preferably glued. Coperating with the `vertical strips 7 is a 'transverse strip 8 similar to the .ones 7 and secured upon the of some relatively stiff upper face of the bottom Wall 2. :The strips Tand 8 are arranged slightly spaced from the free vertical edges of the side walls and the outer edge `of the bottom wall' respectively and act as a stop and brace for'the hinged side 4 when said side is in' closed' position as shown in Fig. 2 in the drawings The hinged Side i comprises a lower rectangular hinged section 9 that is hinged at its lower longitudinal edge to the bottom wall 2 by means of a flexible preferably fabric strip 1 0, thatI is glued or otherwise suitably secured to the portion 9 and Wall 2. Hinged to the upper longitudinal edge 'of the section 9 is an upper hinged section 11 vthat is of thesarne length as the section 9 and hinged by means of a fabric strip 12 similar to the one 10. v
Secured upon the outer faces of the sections 9 and 11 and'to the sections 9 and 11 are elastic strips 13 that serve to hold the upper section 11 in closed position and in engagement with the adjacent iange 6 of the lid when in closed position. These strips 13 are secured at their ends to the sections 9 and 11 at the points where said sections are hingedlv connected with each other. 1When the side i is in closed position as illustrated in Fig. 2 in the drawings, the inner faces of the sections J and`11'eng`age certain angular* portions of the angular strips 7 and 8 'and the outer face' of the upper section 1'1` engagesthe inner face of the adjacent fiange G. It will thus be seen `that the side issecurely held in closed position.

Reinforcing portions sidewalls secured to three of the edges o 16 are secured to the sections 9 and 11 at the bottom wall, -a' hinged side wall hngedly points wlmre the flexbleelement 15 passes secured to the bottom Wall on the free edge v, therethrough. thereof, strips secured on the inner faces of to To open the hinged side 4 the operator `the vopposed side walls and on the rbottom .grasps the exible element 15 and communi' wall to engage the hinged side when said Cates a pull thereto causing the upper section lside is in closed position, a iianged cover for `11 to move inwardly out of engagement with the box, the upper edge of the hinged side `the iange 6 at which time the side is free 'wallrto engage the inner face of the adjacent 55 to be opened outwardly. In this connection Hangs on the cover, said side wall compris: 15 it willbe noted that the strips 7 on the sides ing two sections hingedly connected with of the walls 3 are spaced from the upper each other and a flexible element secured to longitudinal edges of the side walls suthe upper section and extended through the ciently to enable the inward drawing of the lower section on the inside thereof. 6o uppersection 11 when a pull is communi' -2. A hat box consisting of a bottom wall, :cated to the fiexible element 15. To close side walls secured tothree of the edges of' the box the operator vgrasps the string 1 5 the bottom wall, and to each other, a flanged and pulls theupper section 11 intoposition lid mounted uponthe side wall and a hinged as shown in Fig. 3 in the drawings which side wall hinged at its lower edge to the 65 is approximately at right angles to the lower bottom wall at the free edge thereof and ar- -sect1on 9. It will be clearly seen that when ranged'to engage the inner face of the adthe side is in this position it may bereadily jacent flange on the lid when in closed posi- -forced into closed position as shown in Fig. tion, said hinged side wall consisting of 2 in the drawings. The upper longitudinal two sections being hinged ,-'to eachl other, 70 edge of the section 11 is preferably reinelastic strips secured attheir ends to the forced by means of a metallic strip 17 lbent sections and serving to hold the upper lof to engage opposite s'des of the/portion 11. .the sections in enga ement-with the inner lnpractice, I have found that the formof face of-theadjacent ange on the cover. and my invention, illustrated in the drawings a iiexible element secured to the upper seo-v 75 and referred to in the above description, as tion and extended from the inner face of the 1@the preferred embodiment, is the most elilowerl section Athrough ,to ythe outer face cient and practical; yet realizing that the. thereof. v l `1` v conditions concurrent with the adoption of Inftestimony whereof I aiiix my signature my device will necessarily Vary, I desire to in presenceof two witnesses.
