Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Dec-ember 2, 1913. Serial No. 804,195.
To all whom'it may concern Be'it lrnoyvnthat I. LEONARD V. Minnnnswonrri; a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadclphia and State of'iPennSyIvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ,lneuts in Metal-Sash Joints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metal sash joints, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of joint in which the muntins located at right angles to each other are securely locked together forming a neat juncture and insuring an extremely strong sash.
A further object is to provide the muntins with improved arrangement of recesses in their webs, so that when the Webs are forced together when at right angles, a ortlon of one web will be bent so as to inter ock in the recess in the other web.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. y
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating my improved joint. Fig. ,2 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of one of the muntins. Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view in section on the line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating the other muntin. Fig. 6 is a view in section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view in sec- .tion on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1.
1 and 2 represent the two muntins located at a right angle to each other and formingmy improved joint. Both muntins consist of webs 3 having integral heads 4 at one edge. The heads 4 project at both sides of l the webs, and eachbead' at both sides of the web is recessed as shown at 5. These recesses are cut at an angle, so that when the muntins are crossed, they will nicely fit together with the linb's of juncture at an angle of ninety degrees (90) to each other. The muntin 1 is provided with a transverse slot 6 extending inwardly into the webbed portion and at its inner end having a lateral recess 7, the walls of the recess curved and merging intov the walls of the slot. The muntin 2 is provided with a slot 8 cut into its web portion and forming at the inner end Patented Aug. 25, 1914.
By curving the tongue transversely, the 1 metal is appreciably weakened at both edges of the tongue so that when the muntins-are forced, the tongue will follow the curved wall 10 joining the slot 6 and recess 7, and will be bent into the recess 7 and securely lock therein. as clearly shown in Fig. 7.
In operation, it is simply necessary to position the muntin 2 across the muntin 1 with the slot 8 registering with the slot 6, then forcing the muntin 2 inwardly. The tongue 9 is compelled to bend into the recess 7 and securely lock the muntins together, insuring a strong durable juncture.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spiritand scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a joint of the character described, the combination of two muntins located at an angle to each other, one muntin having a slot therein with a recess at the inner end of the slot, and the other muntin having a tongue to enter the slot and lock in the recess, substantially as described.
2. In a jointof he character described, the combination with two muntins located at an angle to each other, one muntin having a slot therein with a recess at the inner end of the slot, and the other muntin having 'a bendable tongue adapted to be bent into the recess and lock the muntins together, substantially as described. I
3. In a joint of the character described, the combination of two muntins adapted to be positioned at an angle to each other, each muntin comprising a web having a head at one edge extending at both sides of the web, said beads recessed at both sides of the webs, one of said muntins havin a slot extending inwardly from the web ed edge and at its inner end having a recess in one wall, the other muntin having a slot in its web portion with a tongue formed at the inner end of the slot, said tongue adapted to be bent laterally when the muntins are forced together and projected into the recess, substantially as described.
4. In a joint of the character described, the combination of two muntins adapted to be positioned at an angle to each other, each muntin comprising a web having a bead at one edge extending at both sides of the web,
said beads recessed at both sides of the webs, one of said muntins having a slot extending inwardly from the webbed edge and at its inner end having a recess in one wall, the other muntin having a slot in its web portion with a tongue formed at the inner end of the slot, said tongue thinnest at its free end and tapering to its other end, and said tongue curved transversely whereby the tongue at its sides is fragilely connected to its slot and the other muntin having a tongue at the inner end of its slot adapted to be bent into the recess when the muntlns are forced together, substantially as described.
