WINDING-INDICATOR. f
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1914.
Application led November 18, 1911. Serial No. 661,132.
To all fr0/mm it may concern f i Be it known that I, JOSEPH MAZER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Mc- Alester, in the county of Pittsburg and State of Oklahoma, have lnvented a new and useful Improvement in Winding Indicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a winding indicator to be used in connection with watches7 clocks, phonogra hs or other devices to which it may be Found applicable, whereby it is vpossible by a dial located in view and an indicator hand t0 tell not only when the main-spring is fully wound or when it is run down7 but also the extent to which it is wound at any particular moment and the time when it will require rewinding.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple form of mechanism in which there are a small number of arts and the parts so arranged as to be con ned within a narrow space, all :is fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a faceview of a watch with my invention applied thereto Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of a portion of the watch plate with the dial plate removed; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 Fig. 2; and Figs. 6 and 7 are views of a modified form of my invention.
In the drawings I have illustrated my invention as applied to a watch A of any suitable construction with an ordinary movement which it has not been deemed necessary to illustrate.
The letter 0 designates the main-spring barrel within which is the main-spring o. The ratchet wheel z'. is attached to the barrelarbor oJ and said ratchet wheel meshes with the winding wheel H. Meshing with the winding wheel H is the pinion lc mounted on a pin Z at the lower end of which is the gearwheel m connecting directly with the gearwheel This gear-wheel f has the annular projection f which engages a shoulder f2 in the sun gear g. Connected to or formed integral with the plate la is the stud (l. The sun gear q is loosely mounted on the stud rl.
The gear-wheel f is provided with the crown-teeth f3. The teeth f3 mesh with the planet-gear e carried by the stud g on the disk g. The disk g is mounted loosely on the stud d which is connected to lower plate k. The gear-wheel e meshes with the pinion portion It of the vrear-wheel z.. The earwheel it has the ange h2 to encircle the flange f" of the gear-wheel f. This gearwheel lz. is also mounted loosely on the stud d. The cap-screw d is threaded into the stud d and acts to hold down the double gear .It and planetary disk g. The gear-wheel lt is also provided with the spur teeth h3 which mesh with the pinion fn. on the center-wheel staff Z', which in turn meshes with the spring-barrel. The sun gear g has the pinion p formed central. with said disk which meshes with an intermediate gear r. The gear r meshes with the indicator hand gearwheel s.
Then the watch is unwinding the barrel rotates, the ratchet being held stationary, and by the rotation of the barrel the center pinion n being in engagement with the barrel and meshing with the teeth 'h3 of the double gear-wheel It. The pinion k of gearwheel /i meshes with the planetary-gear e which meshes with the vertical teeth f3 of the crown-wheel f. As the crown-wheel f is held from rotation b its engagement indirectly with the ratchet-wheel, the gearwheel e being loosely fastened to the sun gear g and traveling in its orbit carries the sun gear y, which aving the pinion p meshing with intermediate gear r rotates the indicator hand gear s. When the watch is being wound, the pinion .as engaging winding wheel H rotates the ratchet-wheel and winds up the spring. At the same time the Winding wheel H rotates pinion lc mounted on arbor Z carrying at its lower end pinion m which meshes w1th the spur teeth of wheel f. This imparts rotation to planetary wheel e which being loosely mounted on the sun gear rotates said disk together with the wheel f' which in turn rotates intermediate gear 1' which rotates indicator hand-wheel 8 1n opposite direction returning same to zero.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have illustrated modified form of my invention in which the entire mechanism is under the spring-barrel. The spring barrel 5 is provided with the pinion 6 rigidly attached thereto which meshes with the planetary-wheel 7 loosely mounted on the sun gear disk 8. The sun gear 8 carries with it the pinion 10 which meshes with the intermediate gear 11 which meshes with indicator hand-wheel 12. The gear-wheel is provided with spur teeth 9a which engage the planetary wheel 7. The gear-wheel 9 has also the teeth 9b which CIK mesh with an intermediate pinion 13, Said pinion meshing with a pinion 'lt on the staff l5 which carries a geanwheel 16 at its upper end and engages the ratchet wheel 17.
That l1 claim i:
l. n a watch or the like, the combination of the maiirspring` barrel, winding` mecha` nism including a ratchet-wheel, an indica tor hand, a. stud on thewatch-plate, gearmechanism mounted on said stud, conne@ tions between said mechanism and indicator hand, connections between said lgear-mechanism and Said ratchet wheel in reversing, connections between Said gear-mechanism and said spring-barrel in unwindingj, and a cap engaging Said Stud to hold Said mechanism in place.
2. ln a watch or the like, the combination of the main-spring barrel, winding;` mechanisin inchiding a ratchet-wheel, a combined spur and crown tooth gear-wheel, connectione between said ratchet-wheel and the Spur teeth of said gear, an imlicator-handr` and connections between the crown teeth ot' said gear and said ndicatorehand for operating` the same,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. C.
n l l l l l l l l l In a watch or the like, the combination of the main-spring barrel, winding` mechanism includinga ratchet-wheel, combined spur and crown tooth gear-wheel engaging with the upper plate of the watch and supported therein, connections between the spur teeth of Saidgear-wheel and the ratchetwheel, an indicator hand, and connections between the crown teeth of Said gear and said indicator-hand tor operating the same.
4l. ln a watch or the like, the combination of the main-spring` barrel, windingmechanism including a ratchet-wheel, a combined Spur and crown tooth gear-wheel, connectionS between said ratchet-wheel andthe spur teeth of said crown gear, a planet-gear engaging the crown teeth of said gear, an in licator-hand, andl connections between Said planet-gear and said indicator hand for operating` the saine.
ln testimony whereof, I the Said J'osnin MAZER have hereunto set my hand.
