fireman-WATER FILTER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN R. Hnsisnonn and SAMUEL Gr. l-lIAsnLnL-N, citizens of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Garrard and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cistern-ll ater Filters, of which the following is a specification.
'lhis inve ition relates to a filter for use in connection with cisterns, the object of the invention being to automatically separate trash washed from a root from the water and discharge the same upon the outside of the filter.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view liig. 2 is a section upon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In these drawings 1 represents a cylindrical receptacle having a conical cap 2 at its upper end intowhich centrally fits the water pipe 3 adapted to convey the water from the roof. Suspended within. the cap 2 and spaced therefrom is a conical deflector a which. spreads the water and discharges the same into a suitable screen 5 which is fitted w1thin the upper portion of the receptacle and which has the form of an inverted cone. An obliquely arranged discharge pipe 6 runs from the central portion of: the screen 5 to a point outside of the receptacle 1, the said pipe having a screen covered opening 7 in vertical alineinent with the apex portion of the screen 5. A perforated false bottom 8 is arranged in the lower portion of the receptacle 1 and supports the filter bed 9, of charcoal or other suitable material which bed fills all of the space between the bottom 8 and the screen being packed about pipe 6. A discharge pipe 10 leads to the cistern and opens into the lower end of the reccptacle 1 at a point above the bottom of the receptacle to avoid carrying any sediment into the cistern. A clean out opening 11 is closed by means of a plug 12. The parts may be formed of any suitable material and 1 Specification of Letters Patent.

in any suitable size and it will be obvious that all trash which may be washed from the roof and carried into the receptacle 1 will pass from the screen 5 into the pipe 6 and will be discharged upon the outside of the receptacle while the water will either pass through the screen 5 or the screened opening 7 into the filter bed and then through the false bottom 8 and will overflow into the pipe 10, sediment from the filter bed being caught in the bottom oi the receptacle from whence it can be washed by removing the plug 19 from the clcanout opening 11.
That we claim is 1. A device of the kind described comprising a receptacle, a discharge pipe opening centrally therein, a conical deflector suspended within said receptacle and in alinement with the discharge pipe, an inverted conical screen arranged within the receptacle and below the deflector, a discharge pipe leading from the apex of said inverted cone outwardly through a side of the receptacle, a filtering material inclosing said pipe and said inverted cone aid pipe having an opening upon its under side in alineinent with the apex of the cone, and a screen in said openin A device of the kind described co1nprising a receptacle, a conical cap therefor, an inlet pipe opening centrally through said cap, a spreader cone hung within said cap, an inverted reticulated cone arranged beneath the spreader cone and opening clownwardly in the apex portion an obliquely arranged discharge pipe secured to said open apex portion of the reticulated cone, a :talse perforated bottom for said receptacle, a filter bed packed between the false bottom and the reticulated cone, a discharge pipe leading from the lower portion of the receptacle, said receptacle having a clean out opening, and means for closing said clean out opening.
