To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS L. PERRIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 352 Clinton street, Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sterilizing Apparatus for Surgical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sterilizing apparatus for surgical instruments, particularly dental instruments which must be used repeatedly upon various patients;
In the course of theusual practice of the dentist during which he is required to work upon a large number of patients,the problem arises how to sterilize the instruments so as to secure the patients from infection. It is necessary that some quick and certain apparatus be had so that no time need be wasted on the part of the dentist and at the same time secure thorough sterilization.
The principal object of my invention is to fulfilthe above requirements and to this end I have provided an apparatus consisting of two telescoping shells, the interior one of which is in the form of a receptacle in which a suitable powdered medium, such as fine sand or powdered asbestos may be placed. The heatis applied to the bottom of the interior shell and allowed to travel up through the space between it and the surrounding outer shell, thus securing a maximum heating surface calculated to heat up the powdered medium rapidly and with the least possible waste of heat. \Vithin the inner shell or receptacle are disposed racks in which smaller. instruments, such as burs, drills, etc., may be rcadily placed, while in the main portion of the receptacle the larger appliances, such as carborundum wheels, disks, forceps, or even bottles may be thrust :tor sterilization.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the apparatus consists of an outer shell 10 having in the interior thereof spaced ribs 11 abutting the interior shell or receptacle 12. WVithin this receptacle may be placed a suitable. powdered heat absorbing medium 13, such as powdered sand or asbestos. In this medium may be thrust any instrument or appliance desired to be sterilized. In Fig. 1 I

etc., I provide at the interior of the receptacle 12 and attached to the wall adjacent to the top thereof, pans 15 and 16 of varying depths. These pans are covered with the perforated covers 17 and 18 having over turned hooked portions 19 and 20 which engage the interior walls of these pans. These perforated covers form racks into which the small slender tools 200 may be readily in- ;serted and thrust into the powdered medium contained in the pans, and thus assurance is had that these small tools are not lost. In fact these racks may serve as convenient holders for the tools, in which holders the latter may readily be found always in a sterilized condition. i

The bottom of the outer shell 10 is pref erably formed with perforations 22 to admitair for the flame, so as to aid combustion, and the space between the outer shell and the receptacle affords a fine for the heated gases, thus n'ovicling a large heating surface for rapid y heating up the receptacle. The heated gases in passing through this flue contact the portion of the wall innuediately about the pans 15 and 16 and thus cause the contents of the latter to heat up more rapidly.
A suitable cover 23 may be applied to the mouth of the receptacle to retain the heat therein and also to give a finished appearance to the device.
By regulating the burner, the heat retaining substance inthe receptacle may be maintained at the desired temperature, which is about from 220 to 230 degrees, a temperature su'tlicient to kill all germs, but insufficientto affect the temper of the instruments.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.
