CHARLES EDWARD SANTO, OF LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SPRING-HINGE.
memes.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWARD SANTO, of London, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spring hinges of the type including a checking device, and the objects of the invention are to reduce the number of working parts, to render the device less conspicuous, to enable it to be wholly located in a small recess in the door, and generally to simplify and improve the construction of the working parts and beti ter adapt them to perform the functions required of them.
Further objects are to enable access to be had to the working parts for purposes of repair and the like and to enable the door to partially open before the checkin@ device starts to operate, and to enable the thinge to be readily alined in position.
The invention consists of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and draw ings.
In the drawings,Figu1-e l is a sectional perspective view of the improved hinge as seen fixed to the bottom of a door. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the hinge and the check case, showing the piston therein and the means for operating the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hinge plunger looking from below. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the combined cam base, check shaft support and crank support. Fig. 5v is a perspective view of the check operating pin. Fig. 6 is a Sectional side elevationof the hinge plunger and spring attached thereto. Fig. 7 is a sectional detail through the check pin and support therefor'.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the floor plate, B the casing containing the check case C and carrying the spring pocket D.
E represents the supporting or connecting member, F the hinge pin and G the Icheck pin. The member E relatively supports the check pin and connects the same with the floor plate.
The hinge which supports the door is suitably secured to the licor plate A and the Specification of Letters Patent.

latter is secured to the floor by suitable means such as the wood screws 10. The supporting member E which serves as a combined cam base, check shaft and crank support is U-shaped in form and constructed with parallel top and bottom plates ll and 12 connected by a plate 13 which is curved in cross section.
The alinement of the supporting member E on the )late A is controlled by suitable means, suc-1 as screws 14 and l5 provided in the plate E and which extend into a re cess 1G in said plate and are there adapted to abut the opposite sides of an upstanding projection 17 on the floor plate. As the supporting member is pivotally mounted on the hinge pin it will be seen that its alinemcnt may be readily adjusted by tightening one of the screws 14 or l5 and loosening the other.
The bottom plate l1 of thesupporting number serves as a cam base or means by which the spring return mechanism H` is caused to exert a pressure tending to return the door to its normal position. This spring device H includes a plunger 9.0 having u. bifurcated end Q1 which embraces the hinge pin, and is formed with a recess 9.9. in one end in which a in 23 extends, such pin beingsupported from the casing B held in position by means of nuts 24 and 25 mounted on the screw threaded portion of the pin and embracing opposite sides of the casing E. A spiral compression spring 26 extends around the plunger H. and abuts the nut 25 at one end, said nut being formed with an annular recess 27 to receive the spring.
The cam base or plate 11 is provided with a pair of cam rollers 30 and 3l carried on suitable pins embedded in the plate. These cam rollers are adapted to engage the head 32 provided on the plunger H, whereby when the door is swung open the head of the plunger engaging the cam roller will cause theiplunger to be moved inwardly on the pin 23 to compress the spring 26, and the reaction of the plunger against the roller will tend to return the door to its normal position.
The checking device is included within the check case C conveniently formed integral with the casing and includes a cylinder LO, piston al, connecting rod 42 which is articulated to the piston and connected at the opposite ends to the check pin G. This check pin extends through a perforation 44;
in the supporting member, and is seated on its under side in the partition i6 between the check case and spring pocket. The check pin G is forn'ied on its lower end With a crank pin i7 oil'lset from the center of the pin. The check pin is allowed a limited amount of rotation with respect to the supporting member E and this isA accomplished by forming the slot l5 of the shape shown in F ig. 7 and by cutting recesses i3 in the side of the check pin. Will be seen that the slot l5 is somewhat in the form of the numeral nl and is provided With an aperture 49 at one end through which the pin may be introduced. In this Way the check gin may turn a certain distance in either direction before it is stopped by the Walls of the slot 45 and thus the check Will not be caused to operate until the door has opened a certain amount. f
The check case is filled with oil and a bypass 50 is formed from one side of the piston to the other, being located in the Wall of the casing and controlled by a valve in the form of a screw 5l extending through one side of the check case and abutting a valve seat 52 ormed'on the opposite side of the check case and through which the by-pass passageway opens. To give additional support to the check pin and to the supporting member E a flange 60 is formed on top ot the casing extending parallel with the surface thereof and adapted to tit over the plate l2. The entire casing B is located `in a suitable recess in the door L. The
check case Will con-tain oil or suitable liquid to retard the movement of the piston therein after the usual manner.
ln the operation of the device, as the door is swung open the casing B revolves With the door relatively to the door plate A and supporting member E in a horizontal plane, the oil passing from one side to the other ot the piston ell through the by-pass, and also if necessary through the perforation 62 provided in the piston. At the same time the spring device H is compressed as already explained, and upon being released this will operate to automatically close the door.
