Description

L. T. FURNAS.
DRESS FORM.
APPLICATION IILBD JUNE 6,1913.
1,107,055, Patented Aug. 11,1914.
TTUHNEYS emrah saarns PATENT OFFICE.
LINUS TERRY FUHNAS, OF LIMA, OHIO.
DRESS-FORM.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LINUS TERRY FURNAs7 a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Dress-Form, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved dress form to he worn beneath corset covers, skirts, and other garments with a view to rectify deiiciencies in the body ci' the wearer, and arranged to permit the user to accurately draw up the ruilies after washing the garment with a view to correctly shirr the ruiiies to tit the garment.
In order to accomplish the desired result,
i use is made of a lo-unce provided with heins,
each containing a loop string doubled up to form a loop and secured at its end to one end of the hem, and a draw-string likewise doubled up and passino through the loop of the loop string, Vone end of the draw-string being secured to the other end of the hem, and the loose end of the draw-string extending out of the hem at this end.
A practical embodiment of the invention mis represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspondingl parts in all the views.
Figure l is a tace view of the dress form `looking at that side next to the garment to which it is attached, part .of the lounce being shirred and part ol the iiounce being broken out; Fig. 2 is an enlarged face view of a portion of a flounce and the means for shirring the lounce, parts being shown broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the dress form on the line 3*?) of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. l.
In reshirring the ruies after the garment is washed the user often has considerable diiiiculty in correctly shirring the ruffle to provide the desired fullness, the rutile being either shirred too much or not enough. The body or foundation A of the dress form, which is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, may be made of muslin or any other suitable woven fabric, netting or open mesh material, and is provided with a series of ilounces B, the upper edges of which are secured at one end only to the outer surface of the body A, these lounces extending in a se- Speccation of Letters Patent.

`edges of laps Patented Aug. 11, 1914. Serial No.` 772,075.
ries across the upper front portion of the garment, and each consisting of a foundation piece C to which are secured the upper D, these iiaps bein disposed upon the inner surface o. the foundation piece C and extending toward the garment or body A. Each of the `lounces B is provided with henis F, preferably one at the top and one at each junction of the flap D with the piece C, and within each hem F are arranged a loop string G and a draw-string H. The loop string G is doubled up to form a loop and its ends are secured by stitches I or other means to the corresponding end F of the hem F, and the doubled-up loop string G is of a length corresponding approximately to the length of the lounce B after being shirred. The draw-string H is also doubled up and passes through the loop G and one end of the draw-string H is secured by stitches J or other means to the other end F2 of the hem F. The free end H of the draw-string H extends through the open end F2 of the hem F to the outside thereof. Now when the `i'lounce B is iiattened out and it is desired it is only necessary for y to shirr the lounce, the user .to pull on the free end H of each draw-string H so as to shirr the rutile along the loop string G, it being understood that on pulling on the free end H of the drawstring H the loop string G is drawn through the hem F toward the end F2, and when the latter point is reached the rutile is shirred on the loo-p string G. From the foregoing it will be seen that the length of the shirredl ruffle corresponds to the length of the loop string G, which is the required length to shirr ruffle to proper fullness. The drawstrings H of the adjacent lounces B are tied into bows H2, as plainly indicated in Fig. l, so as to hold the ounces in shirred positions, it being seen that in order to permit this to be done, the flounces are secured in pairs across the garment or other foundation, with the draw strings of each pair extending inwardly toward one another.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the user of the garment after washing the same can quickly and correctly shirr each rutile to obtain the desired fullness and without danger of shirring the ruiiies too much or not suliiciently.
Although I have shown and described a particular form of flounce, it is evident that I do not limit myself to any special construction of the flounce as the sets of strings Gr and II can be used in the heins of any flounce for the purpose mentioned.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A dress form provided With a flounce having a guide, a loop string Within the said guide and doubled up to forni a loop, the ends of theloop string being secured to one end of the flounce, and a draw-string extendingwithin the said hein and doubled up, the draw-string passing through the loop of the loop string and having one end secured to the other end of the iiounce, the other and free end of the draw-string extending beyond the last-mentioned end of the fiounce.
2. A dress form, comprising a foundation, a flounce secured at one upper corner to the said foundation and overlying the saine, the flounce being provided with a longitudinally-extending hem reaching from one end of the `lio-Lince to the other end, a loop string extending Within one portion of the hem and doubled up to form a loop, the ends of the loop string being fixed in the corresponding end of the hem, and a draw string extending in the other portion of the hein and doubled up, the draw string passing through the loop of the loop string and having one end secured to the other end of the hem, the loose end of the draw-string extending .through the end of the hein to the outside thereof.
`3. A dress forni provided With a. liounce having a hem, a loop sti-ing Within. the said hem and doubled up to form a loop, the ends :Tof the loop string being` secured to one end of the hem, and the length of the loop stringcorresponding to the length of the ruflie when shirred, and a draw-string extending Within the said hem and doubled up, the ,draw string passing through the loop of the loop string and having one end secured to the other end of the hem, the loose end of the draw-string extending through the end of the hein to the outside thereof.
t. A dress forni, comprising a foundation, flounces secured at one upper corner to the said foundation and overlying the same, each liounee being provided with a longitudinally-extending hem reaching from one end of the flounce to the other end, a loop string extending in oneportion of the hem and doubled up to form a loop, the ends of the loop string being fixed in the corresponding end of the hein, the length of the doubled-up loop string determining the length of the shirred i'uflie, and a draw-string extending in the other portion of the hem und doubled up, the draw-string passing through the loop of the loop string and having one end secured to the other end of the hem, the loose end of the draw-string extending through the end of the hein to the outside thereof the said flounees being arranged in pairs on the said. foundation, and the donnees of each pair having the free ends of their drawstrin s extending toward one another to permit them to be tied to one :mother when the flounces are shirred.
5. A dress form con'iprising a foundation, 75 flounees attached to the foundation, and shiri'ing and limiting ineens on each {iounce for shirring the saine, comprising eoi'iperating members for limiting the shirring to form a ruflie of the length of one of said members.
6. A dress form comprising a foundation, flounces attached to the foundation, and shirring and limiting means on each fiounce for shirring the same, comprising interengaging loop members for limiting the shirring to form a rufde of the length of one of the loops.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of tivo subscribing Witnesses.
