In the operation of the rotary table 3 by means of the transmission device above described the rotation of the driving wheel 8 causes the cable or rope 12 to be carried around in the groove of the drive Wheel formed between'the opposing faces of the grippingjaws and the pressure of the rope on these jaws tends to propel them inwardly and pinch them against the rope, thereby giving a tight grip on the rope, which is capable of' transmitting many times the strain that could be transmitted by anordinary frictional engagement. In a similar manner the' rope, in passing around the wheel 13 on the rot-arv table 3, engages in the groove formed between the opposing faces of the gripping jaws on said Wheel, and by its pressure on said jaws causes said jaws to'g'rip the rope and transmit the rotative force to the rotary table. In conse quence of this strong gripping action itis possible to drive the rotary table direct from the engine without interposition of the usual 'intermediate driving connections. I also provide in the drilling rig, for operating the various other rotative parts of the rig by transmission devices similar to those above described, thereby greatly reducinen thenunr. ber of parts required and simplifying the construction and operation of the rig. The shaft 4c() for operatingthe walking beam is mounted on bearings 41 and is provided with a driving Wheel 4t2 which is connected to a Wheel 43 on the engine shaft 9 by rope 24, said Wheels 42 and 43 being provided With gripping jaws similar to those above described. t clutch 44 is provided for connecting Wheel 43 to engine shaft 9. The draw Works indicated at .60, which may also be used in place of a calf Wheel, is connected to the shaft 9 aforesaid by wire rope or cable 6l running over a Wheel 62 on said shaft 9 and over Wheel 63 on the shaft Gil for said draw AWorks or calf Wheel, said wheels 62 and 63 having gripping j aWs similar to those of Wheel 13. .er clutch 65 is with interposed between the shaft-9 and Wheel 62 and the usual brake 66 is provided for the draw Works or calf Wheel.
By the above described construction and arrangement of the part-s all the drilling operations Whether' by rotary 0r standard 0peration, can be performed conveniently and with minimum of obstruction due to the operating parts. The cost and weight of the rig are also materially reduced by the above described arrangement.
What I claim is:
1. In a drilling rig, the combination with the derrick, of an engine provided With a shaft, a plurality of Wheels on said shaft, a clutch for connecting each of said wheels to said shaft, a rotary table provided with a Wheel portion, a cable connecting said Wheel portion of the rotary table with one of said Wheels on the engine shaft, a second shaft, a wheel on said second shaft, a cable cohnecting said Wheel on said second shaftv With the other Wheelon' said engine shaft, a plurality of clutches on said second shaft, Wheels connected to said second shaft by said clutches, a bull Wheel and a draw Works for the rig, Wheels connected to said bull Wheel and draw Works respectively and cables engaging said last named Wheels and said Wheels connected by clutches to the said second shaft. i

In a drilling rig, the combination With the derrick, of an engine provided With a shaft, a Wheel on said shaft, a clutch for connecting the said Wheel to the shaft, a rotary table provided with a- Wheel portion, a cable connecting said -Wheel portion of the rotary table with said wheel, a second shaft provided with a plurality of clutches, Wheels on said second shaft and on the enict gine shaft, a clutch connecting said engine shaft and last named Wheel thereon, a cable connecting said last named.
