To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, VAN Ln ROY SIMD/IGNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cadillac, in the county of Wexford and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Sheet-Music Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to loose leaf binders particularly designed for holding sheet music and the like, one of its objects being to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character having novel means for detachably engaging sheet music and holding it between covers so that the leaves of the sheet music can be turned in the same manner as the leaves of a book, it being possible, at any time, to insert additional copies of sheet music into the holder.

Another object is to provide sheet engaging means which can be readily placed in or removed from position within the holder.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which Will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the cover of the holder, the same being formed preferably of thick cardboard or the like and being connected by a finishing cloth 2 or the like ex tending across the back strip 3 formed of heavy cardboard or the like, the finishing Specificationbf Letters Patent.

cloth 2 constituting means whereby the covers l are free to swing relative to the back strip 3. The said back strip is reinforced at its upper and lower ends by strips 4 of cardboard or the like and an intermediate strip 5 is extended across the back strip 3 between the reinforcing strips 4- and is held to the back strip by an inner finishing layer 6 of paper, cloth or any other suitable material which serves to hold the strip 5 normally spaced from the back strip 3. Furthermore a layer 7 of finishing material such as paper or cloth can be extended over the reinforclng strips 4 as well as theinner surface of the covers 1. The layer of finishing material lndicated at 2 extends not only along the outer surfaces of the cover boards 1 but also over the outer surface of the back strip 3 and is preferably folded over the outer edges of the back strip as well as of the cover boards, as ordinarily, so as to lap the edges of the layers 7. Thus it will be seen that the entire cover of the device is made up of the back strip and the cover boards 1 hingedly connected to the back strip, said back strip having, in addition to its reinforcing end strips 4, anintermediate holding strip 5 which is normally spaced from the back strip 3 as shown in Fig. 2.

For the purpose of connecting sheet music or the like to the holder, it is necessary to employ fastening devices, one of which has been illustrated in detail in Fig. 4:. Each fastening device consists of a single length of wire, as shown at 8, said wire being easily bendable and having L-shaped arms 9 at the ends thereof, that portion of the wire between the arms being of the same length as the holding strip 5 and the arms 9 being so shaped as to extend across the ends of the strip 5, thence outwardly toward the free ends of the back strip 3. As long as these fastening devices 8 are positioned with the arms 9 extended across the ends of the hold ing strip 5, it is of course impossible to withdraw the fastening devices from between the strip 5 and the strip 3. However, by rotating the fastening device 8 so as to cause the arms 9 to lie flat upon the strip 3, said fastening device can be withdrawn readily from the holder. The leaves to be mounted in the holder, and certain of which have been shown at A, are to be provided with openings B in the creases or folds thereof, these openings being spaced apart a distance equal to the length of the holding strip 5.

Thus it will be seen that when the folded 5. By inserting one of the fastening de-- vices 8 into the space between the strips 3 and 5, then bending the ends of the fastening device so as to permit them to be inserted readily through the openings 13, and then bending the arms 9 back to their initial positions so-that they will extend in opposite directions within the fold of the sheet, it will be seen that the sheet will be held securely in the holder.

Where a single sheet is arranged within the folded sheet of a publication, as shown at C in Fig.7 5, it is desirable to connect the single sheet to the next adjoining folded sheet by means of a strip D having an adhesive thereon. One of these strips can be provided adjacent the upper edge of the sheet 6 and anotherstrip adjacent the lower edge thereof and then, by providing holes B in the. folded sheet, as hereinbefore described, the publication can be held within the device inthe same manner as hereinbefore described.

It will be apparent that by providing a holder such as herein described, any desired number of publications such as described canbe placed within the holder, it being necessary to utilize a single fastening device 8 for each publication.

As shown in Fig. 2, while the fastening device is' in engagement with the sheets of the publication, it is held against displacement relative to the holder in view of the fact that the engaged portions of the sheets support the arms 9 across the ends of the strip 5 so that the fastening device 8 thus cannot shift longitudinally out of position.

While the holder is particularly designed for use in connection with sheet music, it is to be understood that it can also be employed for holding newspapers, magazines and other publications.

What is claimed is 1. A binder including a back strip, cover boards mounted to swing relative to the back strip and connected thereto, a holding strip spaced from and connected to the back strip and parallel therewith, and fastening devices mounted between the back strip and holding strip and having angular bendable terminals constituting means for engaging the ends of the holding strip to secure the devices against longitudinalmovement, said terminals also forming sheet engaging means, each of said fastening devices being revoluble about its longitudinal axis to disengage its angular terminals from the edges of the holding strip. i

A binder including a back strip, cover boards mounted to swing relative to the back strip and connected thereto, a holding strip spaced from and connected tothe back strip and parallel therewith, and fastening devices removably mounted between the back strip and holding stripand' having angular bendable sheet engaging terminals adapted, when engaging a sheet,'to-be held across the ends of the holding strip, said fastening devices being revoluble about their longitu dinalaxes to disengage their terminals from the ends of the holding strip, whereby the devices may be removed longitudinally from back of the strip. a
