To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SIMON Honrnn and EMIL A. Honrnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and the State of Illinois,have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Mixing Devices, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to mixing devices such as are adapted formixing liquid contents where certain portions of the contents are of a heavier nature than others, it being desired to draw ofi" said liquid at a uniform consistency.
The object of our invention is to construct a mixing device embodying several novel features of construction pertaining to 'the agitating means, the means for operating same, and the supporting means for said mechanism, whereby an efficient mixing device is resultant which shall be inexpensive to manufacture. i
The further object of our invention is to construct such a device which may be'easily attached to a receptacle of various sizes and which may be easily disassembled when necessary.
Inthe accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View of our improved mixing device as applied to a receptacle in the form of a barrel. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the barrel as taken on the line of section 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view taken on the section line 33 of Fig. 2. 1
Our mixing device is especially adapted for mixing feed for stock, where the feed consists of liquid portions such as water and milk and solid portions such as grains, edibles left from the table, etc, this feed being placed in a receptacle; and when the feed is drawn off from the bottom of the receptacle the consistency of the feed is uniform, the result being that all the stock get feed of a like richness.
As a barrel is the most handy and easily obtained receptacle for use with our improvements, we= have illustrated our improvements as applied to such a receptacle 4. At diametrically opposite sides of the barrel and adjacent its top are bolted two angle brackets 5 which serve as anchor means through which the agitator support may be fixedly attached to the barrel. bars 6 diametrically disposed across the open top of the barrel, their open sides faced toward each other, serve as means for supporting the agitator and operating means, and said angle-bars are secured fixedly to the barrel by two cross-bars 7 whose ends rest upon the horizontal sections of each angle-bar, said cross-bars being connected intermediate their ends by bolts 8 to the anchor brackets 5. At the center portion of the barrel and located upon and intermediate opposite sides of the angle-bars is a bracket 9 which is fixedly secured tosaid angle-bars, said bracket having a vertical bearing 10 and a horizontal semi-bearing 11, its top being open, and said semi-bearing is transversely disposed to said angle-bars and is spaced from bearing 10. An agitator shaft 12 is journaled in bearing 10, has a bevelgear 13 fixed to its end above said bearing thereby limiting the down movement of the shaft, a collar 14L limiting opposite displacement thereof, and the lower end of'the shaft is guided in a centrally positioned bearing 15 fixed to the barrel bottom, there being enough lengthwise play in said bearing 15 as to allow for variations in the height of barrels. Agitating armsare attached to the shaft 12 and are in the form of two U-shaped members 16 and 17, said members being disposed on opposite sides of shaft 12 and bolted at 18 together thereby clamping them fixedly with the shaft. It will be noticed that these agitating mei bers are each formed of merely one iron strip in U-form, the parallel sections of the U serving as the agitating arms and the crossmembers of the U serving, when bolted one with the other on opposite sides of the shaft 12, as means for supporting said members in position; also that these arms are spaced so that each arm is of a different distance fromthe shaft. 12. A horizontal shaft 19 has one end resting in the semi-bearing 11, with a bevel-gear 20 fixed to its endsin termediate bearings 10 and 11, in mesh with gear 13, the opposite end portion of shaft 19 being carried by a bearing 21 supported crosswise between the angle-bars 6, and said shaft is provided at its outer end with a hand-crank 22. A suitable drain or cock 23 is provided at the lower portion of the barrel to draw contents therefrom. By rotating handle 22 the agitating arms are rotated Within the barrel and thus the feed therein is mixed to the necessary extent, when it may be drawn from the barrel through the cock 23 and discharged into a feed trough or receptacle.
With the provision of the angle-bars 6 as the sole supporting means for the agitating and operating means, such supporting means may adapt themselves to various sized barrels, since by their novel means of being attached to the barrel, the cross-head members 7 attached to anchor brackets, may assume an engaged connection with said angle-bars, because of being slidable thereon, according to the width of the barrel.
It will be noticed that the shaft 19 is held in position at its inner end through the open topped bearing 11 and the bevel-gear connection which counteracts said open top, and at its outer end by the full bearing 21; thus when disassembled the mixing device, by the removal of the agitating arms 16 and 17 and collar 14, the shaft 12 can be lifted fromthe device, whereupon with the detaching of the bearing 21 may be lifted from the supporting means integral with the parts it carries.
The structural features noted, that of spaced agitator supports which combine with anchor brackets and cross-connecting members to enable the supporting attaching means to adapt themselves to varying sized receptacle tops, that of the two pieced agitator; and the features in supporting the operating shaft, are such as to warrant a mixing device capable of being manufactured at a very reasonable cost, and one which may be easily assembled and attached to a suitable receptacle and still be very easily disassembled for reason of repair or otherwise.
We claim as our invention:
1. In a mixing device, the combination with a support located at the upper portion of a receptacle, of a bracket attached thereto 1 having a vertical bearing and a horizontal bearing spaced to one side of said vertical bearing, the horizontal bearing having its upper half open, a horizontal bearing spaced from said open topped bearing and in alinement therewith,- an agitator shaft journaled in said vertical bearing and carrying a bevelgear above said bearing, a shaft journaled in 1 said horizontal bearings and carrying a bevel-gear intermediate said opentopped bearing and vertical bearing, being in mesh at its upper side with said first mentioned bevel-gear, agitating means attached to said agitator shaft, and means for rotating said horizontal shaft.
2. In a mixing device, the combination with a bracket having a vertical bearing and a horizontal bearing spaced from the vertical bearing, the horizontal bearing having its top open, of a horizontal detachable hearing spaced from said open topped bearing and in axial alinement therewith, an agitator j shaft journaled in said vertical bearing, a shaft journaled in said horizontal bearings, a bevel-gear connection between said shafts, the bevel-gear of the vertical shaft being located above the said open topped bearing, and in mesh with the upper portion of the bevel-gear on the horizontal shaft, agitating means carried by the vertical shaft, and means for rotating thehorizontal shaft.
3. In a mixing device, the combination of a vertical bearing, a shaft journaled therein having a bevel-gear above said bearing and agitating means below same, two spaced horizontal bearings, one being adjacent the vertical bearing and having its top open, a shaft journaled in said horizontal bearings and having a bevel-gear located at the side of said opened topped bearingand being in mesh with the first mentioned bevel-gear in such a manner that the first named bevelgear holds the horizontal shaft operatively in its open topped bearing, and means for rotating the horizontal shaft.
